Okay, so, I'm a native Rochestarian and I'm disappointed that nobody mentioned that we are also have Zwiegle's white hot dogs. That's how I eat my plates.
I was born a Canadian, but I'm spiritually from Rochester. I've been eating what I now know as a Garbage Plate for years. My dad called it A Dog's Breakfast
David Infante This is a link to a menu for a restaurant in Brandon, Manitoba featuring various poutines. joebeeverz.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/JB-Poutine-Sept2015.pdf
pri mera Agreed on the best place. The very best place I ever had poutine was a trailer cantine on the banks of the Rivière-Rouge. Its been well over 20 years and I *still* think about how amazing that poutine was.
As a native Rochestarian, I think I speak for all of us when I say we love our neighbors to the North and you are always welcome to our delicious plates. May I humbly recommend you check out DogTown for your next plate? That will surely compliment your Dad's assessment of this local delicacy.
Bausch and Lomb. Fredrick Douglas and Susan B. Anthony are buried here. Frenchs mustard. Lou Graham from Foreiner was born here. Farm teams of The Minnesota Twins and Buffalo Sabres... Scenes from Spider-Man 2 were shot here. Abbott’s frozen custard, oldest function carousel in the world. Wegmans stores, Kristen Wiig ,Tey Diggs,Abbie Wambach, Phillip Seymore Hoffman are from here. It’s philharmonic and art scene. The music scene is ridiculous around here. Tons and TONS of festivals. It’s the perfect Goldilocks town. Not too big not too small.
Glad this video exists. Living out of town now, no one ever knows what I'm talking about and why I care about it so much. If any of you are ever heading up to Canada, stop by Rochester and grab a plate. You won't regret it.
Gotta say with all the chaos going on, the two things I'm happy about when it comes to heading back to RIT in the fall are Garbage Plates and the Pakistan House food vendor that hopefully comes back to campus
HEY THIS IS ADAM HAMILTON ONE OF THE CHEFS ON THE SUSHI STINGRAY TRUCK AND OWNER OF POKE SUSHI. THANK YOU SO MUCH THRILLIST YOU GUYS ARE AMAZING!!!!! THE VIDEO LOOKS GREAT!!!!!!
It's probably the second thing I ate when I visited Rochester. Went straight to Nick's joint. Funny how everyone in the city offers their version and naming convention...trash plate, sloppy plate, rubbish plate, dumpster plate, bucket plate. Excellent episode! 👍
I didn't go to Rochester to have mine but My job sent me to Brockport for training. I was told before I left i had to try a garbage plate. So I had a garbage plate from Jimmy Zs and Bill grays Both were amazingly delicious.
I was born and raised in Rochester. I cooked for over twenty years and I can confirm hands down the garbage plate is the greatest secret of this City. If I ever moved away from Rochester I would seriously consider opening up a hots place in a small college town that's never heard of them before. Right in walking distance of the Campus. Cheese Burger Plate, HF, Beans (warmed up), ket, must, onions, meat sauce!
It's been years, but I had a boyfriend in Ohio that was from Rochester. His best friend was here too. My b/f took me to Rochester several times, and we had a garbage plate each time. Wonderful. When either my b/f or his best friend went home to Rochester, neither was not allowed back into Ohio unless they brought several garbage burgers back home with them.
Just moved to Baltimore for grad school, but I've been home to Roc 3 times now already and haven't missed out on having a plate each time. I'll be back in 2 days to get another one!
The Garbage Plate was terrific at the OLD NICK'S on Main Street but even better was the free entertainment at 2AM, 3AM or 4AM in the morning on a Friday or Saturday night. WOW! WOW! WOW!
Living in W Palm Beach now, from the Rochester area, I had to order the meat sauce online and make my own. .Yummy. The Lilac Festival has a giant food tent where Nick has an area! Yummy.
This is why I love living in the Rochester area. I’m never leaving. Lots of people who grew up around here move out of state, and I’m like, why? The pizza is good the garbage plates are good and there are tons of different restaurants and bars and shops. Plenty of things to do and see. I hear people complain all the time that somewhere they live down south doesn’t have good restaurants and I’m like, that’s why I live here!
ITS SO FRUSTRATING KNOWING THAT NOT EVERYONE KNOWS WHAT A GARBAGE PLATE IS AND NICK TAHOS. its the best thing I’ve ever had. I live in Rochester and this is the best food you’ll ever have in your life
I have but one criticism of the video; that last guy is incorrect about chicken spiedies being a "Syracuse thing." Salt potatoes are a Syracuse thing, but spiedies hail from the city of Binghamton, which is about an hour due south of Syracuse. That being said, one of the first things my friends and I did when I moved up to Rochester was grab a plate from Nick Tahou's. 3,000 calories? Totally worth it.
Interesting cooking idea for home use. I found out online about Rochester(and Rochester Falls) from looking up my favorite beer, Genesee lager. With hops from the Yakima Valley here in Washington. Might seem off-subject but it does go good with food. I can afford more costly beer but there's something about Genesee.
Love this episode! Rochester is far from being part of the rust belt though. Having said that... That garbage plate was part of a right of passage growing up in Rochester. I spent 39 years up there and loved their garbage plate. Well worth the 3k calories every now and then.
I was born in Rochester but left at the age of 4 or so but I was sitting in my kitchen and threw some stuff together and my parents saw it and immediately took some and were like I'm surprised you remember the garbage plate. I was like what's a Garbage plate. I made it with no idea
I’ve had many different garbage plates in rochester. The original is good. But try jays diner with the fries. I don’t know why but jays is just awesome for a garbage plate.
Going to have to spend enough time in the gym to burn 1000 calories after eating that 😅 Best I could do is about 700 calories per hour on my cardio day Either that or only eat the lightest small portion food for the rest of the day: Fruits bowl, protein shake, oatmeal, vegetable bowl, salad, etc
Don't miss season 2 of InstaChef here: th-cam.com/play/PLH6iYAJIYyN_Xy8Oskje8rHuuSgpOUtmp.html
Why would you need a historian to tell you about garbage plates when the guy who’s family literally invented is 20 feet away in the back?
Hey, it's you again!
LMAO epecially when the so-called historian adds jack shit to the story. "representation of survival mentality in Rochester" - whatever you say, you pretentious prick
gross
There isn't even a "back" the entire kitchen and dining room are all one long strip in one room.

Concerns very well noted. White hots are essential.
Thanks. I was wondering why the hot dogs looked more like bratwurst.
I was born a Canadian, but I'm spiritually from Rochester. I've been eating what I now know as a Garbage Plate for years. My dad called it A Dog's Breakfast
Wait, do they do something similar in Canada? Is there a poutine garbage plate?? TELL ME I MUST KNOW.

@David Infante Dogtown for sure has the best plates.
Dogtown is excellent! Hungry's over in Pittsford is great if you sub the home fries for the double battered fries
Brian Shneydman that’s the shit 😂 love it there
Born and raised in Rochester, garbage plates are always a comfort food for me ❤️
Tonight I am watching videos of Garbage Plates because I am on prednisone and want to eat my entire house covered in gravy and mayonnaise.
Used to live 500 feet from Tahou's on Canal St. I miss my little city sometimes. Crotchfester, NY will always be home.
Me too!!! I lived right on the corner of Long Pond and Trolley Blvd. Now I'm in AZ. Been here for 15 years. Damn I miss those garbage plates 😔
