    They are a great group but I think they are sounding more and more similar each year. I would love for them to step out of there comfort zone. I would love so see them mix like crown brass with old school cavaliers marching.

      It's admittedly kind of annoying to me as much as I love this organization, not to sound too oldhead-ey but I seriously think that their 2009-15 era was just so much better in terms of variety, 2015 sounded nothing like 2014, 2011 sounded nothing like 2010 on so on, but yeah I feel like their sound has been more homogeneous year to year as of late

    • @AlexWells02

      I do agree with them needing to step out of their comfort zone. In my opinion one of my favorite shows from them the past few years was 2018 because it was actually different for once!

      I wanna see the hardest marching, the hardest music, and the hardest color guard layout. With the amount of wins I think they could handle it :)

    I loved the horn line sound this year, to me it seemed like a sparkle and richness that they haven’t had since 2014

    • @justinjohnson4278
      @justinjohnson4278 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Yeah, I had a decent amount of gripes with the show this year but I did love how just punchy and powerful the horn line was, I've felt like in years prior they were kind of a weaker horn line in terms of volume but this year they were easily one of the most powerful

      @@keananok Technically they are. On 2010-2017 they were on King System Blue, in 2018-2021 they were on Chinese Shitty System Blue. Now they’re back on King System Blue, except for the trumpets which are using Bach Strad 43’s.

    BAC had my favorite show of 2022, but Blue Devils objectively had the best show of 2022. Watching it at finals, you could feel how special this show was/is. It was like you were flying first class for the past few shows, landed for 5 minutes, and then got on a luxury private jet. Like you all said, it’s the level of detail that just adds that sparkle to this show.

    • @brettgoldsmith8584
      @brettgoldsmith8584 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, both BAC and Bluecoats were both more fun to watch, but if you look at the judging criteria, it is obvious this is the group that got the highest score. Still, Blue Devils music brought a tear to my eye.

    You guys really nailed it here. The difference between BD and everyone else for over a decade now is in the visual design. All of those little details In the body work, drill, the integration of the guard, and many more are so far beyond what other corps are doing.

    I didn’t think this was a winning show at first because the talent seemed so raw. There are so many soloists/features in this performance and most of them would struggle to be consistent. Obviously they’re amazing musicians, and the Carnival of Venice solo is difficult, but I thought that music judges would dock the corps for flubbed notes. By the end of the season, I noticed that soloists across all corps struggled to hit their features consistently; maybe there was a lack of conditioning due to this being their first competitive season in 2 years, or maybe they were run into the ground by staff, but I definitely developed concern for the members’ well being.
    Musically, this show got getter as it went on for me. The dude on the drum set is an absolute beast, and the music from the ballad onwards was a wave of emotions! I can’t wait to see what BD has cooked up for next year

    • @funlinerproductions7071
      @funlinerproductions7071  2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      If there’s one thing I know for sure, you don’t have to worry about the members being run into the ground. I would argue that BD has the best quality of life on tour in all of DCI!

    My issue with this show (and some other BD shows) is the clarity of the theme presented in the show. You can't just watch and "get it". You have to read, do research, and then rewatch and find things you missed. I feel like you could interchange the music or visual program of this show with the 2017 show and both shows would still work. That's my issue.

    • @WeMissDimebag

      This is very much how I feel.
      I can watch this and recognize how well performed it is, but I have no idea how that performance is supposed to affect me, or anyone watching. And I’ve seen it 10 times now, 5 of them live.
      It sounds great, it looks excellent, it *feels* hollow. I don’t know what I’m supposed to be connecting with.
      And that’s why it winning *feels* bad, even tho I can understand why it did.

    I gotta admit.. for a long time after finals I felt Blucoats were seriously jobbed. That said... I went back and watched this show several times. I have been involved in the marching arts in various capacities since 1986 (marched Freelancers 87-92, I have written and instructed for too numerous groups to count and even most recently I marched with Kidsgrove 2016-2019).. I know a thing or two about this activity is what I am trying to say... And I have to admit that this show was in fact a rightful winner. You guys mentioned the word a few times but I will mention it again and that word is "nuance". This show is just so nuanced that it is easy for the untrained eye or ear to miss bits of this show. Devs visual design has been MILES better than anyone else for at LEAST a decade now, but to me it's the throw away moments that make the difference... That difference being that not a single performer on the field for Blue Devils EVER has a throw away moment.

    As long as Scott Chandler controls the program theme design coordination and overall visual BD will go with what is cutting edge of visual design and creativity that puts them in the position they are every year, and challenges the entire activity to keep pace. Musically there is nothing weak about their program year after year, if not State of the Art in excellence and demand individually and ensembly. Every category strong year after year - brass, percussion, guard. Don't get me started on their talent they draw year after year members and staff. I know it sounds corny but its accurate when I heard the phrase they are the "Yankees" of DCI. A nd I'm not saying that to dis the rest of all the corps that strive for excellence. And there are plenty of DCI fans who favor other corps so hold a grudge against BD and I get that. But it is what it is. No other activity has a more rigorous and sophisticated judging system. So if that is deemed defective by enough member DCI Corps, it will be changed for the better - which is why DCI MEMBER DIRECTORS meet every year at a conference to make any changes deemed to improve the activity. Don't waste negative energy talking crap about the leaders. Be thankful the activity standards and judging system in place just keeps making everyone better year after year.

      Totally fair point! To be honest I was most familiar with the Blue Devils show and had watched almost every run of their season so it was easy to tell for me that their semis run was best. For the other corps I didn’t know exactly what run was best for them so I went with finals. I also made that decision because finals night was the night that crown won brass and Bluecoats won percussion so I figured it was stronger overall for them.

    Only thing I disagree with is the “stacked vet” mentality, only 20 vets is no joke and it’s impressive that those rookies can make an amazing show, but you have to keep in mind that probably 90% of those rookies have at least 1 or 2 years of drum corps experience. BD pulls so many vets from just other corps, so while yes they may be BD rookies, they’re not vets to drum corps. Every corps has a different culture absolutely but you always have to value how many people have done drum corps. But man BD put on a hell of a show!! One of my best friends from my first drum corps season marched this summer and I loved trying to see him after most shows (I marched mandarins)

    Part 3 sounds more together at semis, especially the screamer solo at the top of the cowboy bebop section. The one at finals was mic'd a little too loud and sounded sorta similar to if you turned the vocal in a song way up where it sorta felt like an independent part.

      I think what he means is the form they are in. Playing Tank! in a form like that can be interesting side to side. Many corps if they were to play tank would most likely have their members in a condensed form with intermixed instrumentation next to one another as opposed to sectioning. There are a ton of individual moments in each instrumental section that make Tank! So difficult and matching it can be hard.
      You are right. Maybe the comment was a little vague and the form could in fact be much harder or much more spread, but given the source music, the visuals don’t need to be crazy and it is already hard enough as is.

    Always enjoy the content fellas!🔥🖤🔥 The DCI activity is so demanding that any tics & errors are really noticeable, take in account a forgettable mention with BD's guard, at 10:32, a rifle toss from the whole guard, at the bottom of your right screen, a failed attempt to catch the rifle bounces onto the field. But who cares anyways right... they took it, making it a total of 20 DCI World Championship Titles. The corp(s) trailing are tied for 7 each. That's a major gap, which seems impossible to catch up considering how BD's organization has stayed so consistent over the years.

    This show is not ‘emotionless’ or ‘stale’, but it lacks distinction imo. The effect this show is supposed to have on me is unclear to me. My feelings on this show are pretty much the same after 10 watches as they were after the 1st.
    BD is the best visual corps by far, but musically there just isn’t anything memorable about this show for me outside of the soloists. The hornline sounds great, they’re obviously playing very well, but I couldn’t hum any of it and I saw it live 5 times.
    The talent and execution are undoubtedly there, it just lacks a ton in style/character imo.

    • @squillz8310
      @squillz8310 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can get that. It took me between 2-3 hours of research (listening to source music, reading about artists and their history, and looking at paintings) to understand the theme of this show.
      I think they did very well on the design, it's just not easily accessible for the general public.

      @everettkim706 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If this show just doesn’t click for you then it is what it is. But I’m genuinely surprised that you don’t find the Moon River ballad memorable at all or the Tank! section of the show? And in regards to lack of style or character, the entire show is full of layers of characterization and style down to the foot shape during a turn or articulation in the brass. There’s SO much depth to this show and yes, you may have to pay attention a little harder to find it, but these minute details is the differentiation between BD and the rest. Just makes me wonder what you personally value or consider as deep or memorable.

    • @WeMissDimebag
      @WeMissDimebag 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Moon River doesn’t particularly move me and the Tank section has always not quite lived up to the moment for me.
      Like, I was told before ever seeing it that there was a Tank section, but when they hit it, it didn’t feel as powerful as I’d have hoped for a quote of that tune to feel.
      Perhaps that’s simply a result of it being spoiled for me but it never hit me in the face the way I wanted it to.
      I didn’t say the show lacked depth or detail, I said it lacked character and its messaging is not clear.
      It’s obvious that the visual design staff were very particular here, as they always are for BD. It’s not clear to me how any of it is supposed to affect me or what it’s supposed to communicate, and that’s just a huge sin for me.
      I shouldn’t be able to consume a piece of art 10 times and struggle to find a theme.
      I think it’s perhaps useful to draw a distinction between the best shows and the best performances, if that makes sense.
      I thought Bloo and Boston had the best shows this year, but BD performed at a greater level (as is typical). I will never disparage their level of achievement musically or visually. This is entirely about the design not communicating anything to me.

    • @WeMissDimebag
      @WeMissDimebag 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I’ve watched the show 10 times counting this video, 5 times live.
      Meaning I’ve done almost 2 hours just of consuming the show and I’m no closer to understanding than I was months ago.
      That is a failure of the designers as artists, imo, but I also don’t think BD particularly cares whether they communicate something to the general audience. They care that the judges get it.
      And I don’t necessarily blame them, because it’s a competition, and winning is winning. But it does feel pretty bad, to me, to have what I believe is a less memorable show, winning.
      They deserve it for their level of their performance, I won’t deny that. They have the best talent and presumably the best staff as well.
      I just also wish a group with so much ability didn’t feel as forgettable as they sometimes do.

    • @funlinerproductions7071
      @funlinerproductions7071  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@WeMissDimebag you call it a failure of the show designers that you personally don’t understand their show. But I’d argue that it’s your own personal failure if you watched it 5 times and still don’t get it. Now if you personally just don’t like BD’s show that’s fine of course. But the classic argument that BD writes their shows for the judges is old. BD crafts their shows with the intent of creating a compelling and innovative story. And the way in which they go about it comes from a more artistic and theatrical approach. A lot of fans like yourself don’t resonate with that. But I do. And other fans do. And it just so happens that the judges do too. But people jump to the conclusion that because the judges get it and a lot of fans don’t, then therefore BD only writes their shows for the judges. But that’s not the case.
      Ultimately if you just don’t get this show that’s fine. You don’t have to. And if you like other corps like Boston and Bloo because it’s easier to get and has more character in your opinion, then that’s your prerogative. I just want to share my opinion as someone who is very familiar with the Blue Devils process and show design. I want you to get it too and I’d love if everyone was able to enjoy and appreciate BD’s shows as much as I do. But some just don’t and that’s fine.

    I don't know why but when I first saw this show live, I wasn't really impressed with it. It just didn't really stand out to make at all, I mean yeah it was cool but there wasn't anything that was different from past shows unlike the Bluecoats with the keytar solo and the Boston Crusaders with their Accordion solo but now I am starting to absolutely love and appreciate every little second of it. Now that I watch it a lot more, I'm acknowledging all the hard work they went through to get every little detail right. Now I know that not every show HAS to introduce something new and different to be amazing. The beauty of DCI isn't on how the show itself is written, it's how each group performs and CREATES the show in their own special way.

    The Carnival of Venice solo is obnoxiously hard, and I seriously applaud her on the effort and skill to get it down as well as she did. I am impressed by her as the performer.
    With that said, I absolutely hated the writing and its existence in the show to begin with. Too goofy, and writing it specifically for Piccolo Trumpet is obnoxious in its own right. I have a lot of opinions on Arban’s Carnival of Venice in general, but it’s inclusion in this show, especially the way it was incorporated, rubbed it really badly. Good execution, surprised it didn’t kill them score wise, although I guess writing doesn’t get scored like that. You perform what you got, and they went and did it damn well.

    The melos were hot. Definitely the most complete corps and probably deserving of the win but... the show is boring. I don't care what vets say, the staff continues writing short phrases that don't connect to each other with a sole purpose of scoring well. They're amazing players, but the concept is a yawn from me. Their staff does amazing things and that will continue for sure so I have no doubt they'll be top 2 next year.

      @@gunner-qf9eh ok well yes I was trolling, but in my honest opinion these are pretty different shows. I just think the problem is the structure and a few of the tropes they like to copy off themselves. During the ballad they have a big massive swell in the bottom right corner, like they have done before. Their drum feature has that like tribal singing with tribal drums, like they have done before. The show also starts off with a drum feature and vocals, which admittedly I like this opening a lot more than metamorph’s opening, but they feel shockingly similar. Just in general the feelings that this show embodies are like almost the exact same of that of previous years. I think they do interesting things every year, and it’s hard to deny that they’re really just the best, but their shows keep the same structure and similar identity year to year. I love watching BD shows but they just sound similar to all every year since metamorph.

    • @gunner-qf9eh
      @gunner-qf9eh ปีที่แล้ว

      @Davis Swetmon But almost every corps has a signature sound and drill. BD isn't the only ones.
      If you put every corps and color guard in white t-shirts and black shorts, and didn't give a corps introduction, I could figure within first two minutes who each corps is.
      Besides, BD has a successful model they carved out for themselves. Why change?
      If you was running a company that made Forbes 500, would you stick to what got you there and made you billions.........or would change your business practices just to please some people online that don't matter?
