Faye raised him almost singlehandedly while Kratos stayed away from interfering. so he had almost no interactions with his father until she passed. 2018 was their first real bonding experience since Kratos didn't know how to be a good father to a son he had no say in raising

Kratos begged for her help, knowing full well favors from gods never come without conditions. Freya put no conditions on her help and put the well being of the child first. I think that was the moment Kratos decided he could trust her. She’s the first god he’s ever really trusted

The story was more Kratos was going into the woods to challenge all manner of animals in an attempt to control his rage. Sometimes he'd fail and kill them, but his goal was to not kill anything he came up against in an attempt to be more of a father for his son and less of a weapon of carnage. That's the reason Kratos was such an absent parent.

Kratos built the house and a few other things. Hunting was never his strong suit. However Faye did need him to assist when she went out. He also thinned dangerous animals when he went to conquer his wrath. Faye was home much more than Kratos, as Atreus said in 2018, and kratos being the only parent home was not common
Kratos will break down and tell atreus about his old family all atreus needs to do is ask if he had a family in his old life and Kratos will breakdown he will deny at first
