Duet is the best ever bottle show in Trek, and I think it is the best show in DS9. I don't think they talked about Harris Yulin anywhere enough. Visitor was amazing but is was Yulin that knocked it out of the Park.
Nana Visitor is so incredibly gifted. Kira Nerys was an early favorite character of mine when I first saw "Emissary" in Jan. of 1993. So great that you folks had her on your show.
"Duet" is essential Star Trek. It's the kind of story telling that Trek was made for as a platform. Much like "Measure of a Man", these stories are entirely character and dialogue driven and could also be used as a source for a stage play. A good Trek episode does not need millions of Dollars for special effects and pew-pew. It only needs two people talking in a room. That of course needs top-level writing. And you can hide bad writing behind millions of Dollars worth of special effects (*cough*Discovery*cough*).
Definitely. DS9 beats "Discovery" hands down with great storytelling, and I hope to hear more discussion about this great Classic Trek show, along with TNG, VGR, ENT, and TOS.
Oh my god, what a powerful episode! Harris Yulin was brilliant as was Nana. He was incredible as he brings her slowly around to the truth. I will never forget this episode.
Regarding Harris Yulin and the emotions evoked during this episode, remember that he was essentially playing two different characters. He was an almost over the top psychopath and then transitioned to a victim himself within seconds.
He wasnt a victim. He was a supporter (much like the Nazi camp workers who still are on trial as accomplice to mass murder even in their 90s). Except he reflected on his guilt and tried to compensate for it by offering himself as a top level culprit.
One of the great things Nana brought to Nerys was the idea that you knew she would be a great ally, she would have your back. I met Nana at convention in Cardiff, she is such a warm, engaging person. I had the great fortune to meet Rene at the same convention, he too was a kind, warm, generous person.
I remember as a kid watching sporadically DS9 and thinking thet Major Kira was such a mean character. But like I said I was a kid and didn't understand all the plot points of the episodes. But now as an adult I can say with 100% certainty, Kira is one of my favorite characters and I absolutely love her as a first officer. She had such growth in the show and I loved it. This episode was amazing and both Nana and Harris Yulin were amazing together.
"Duet" was a complete masterpiece. I know most of Season 1 was pretty hit-and-miss, this episode really fit-in with the rest of the show. Kira does let her base feelings about Cardassians take over, which is obviously what Maaritza was counting-on. That final scene in the Brig, which turns it all on it's head, was and still is absolutely heart-breaking. Both Nana and guest star Harris Yulin did an amazing job. In the end, Kira learns the hard way that it's not right to have that prejudice against an entire race. Just because Maaritza was a Cardassian, it doesn't mean he's guilty and deserves to die. I'd also like to say it's a theme which comes-up again in Season 5 in (I think) "In Darkness and Light". After a series of revenge attacks against Kira's old Resistance buddies, she herself is captured by a Cardassian. But again it's a Cardassian who wasn't a military officer, but just someone who was present when Kira's terrorist cell bombed a Cardassian soldier (including their entire family!). In that episode again, Nana gave such an incredible performance as she just lets rip at him saying, "You raped our world! I don't care if you were a soldier or ironed socks for a living! You were all guilty and you were all legitimate targets!"
I maintain, to this day, that Maaritza is the man who saved the Alpha Quadrant. Without this moment, Kira might not have been open to her later Cardassian friendships, and thus not open to helping the Cardassian Resistance. And without that...the war might have ended very, very badly.
@ 12:22 I COMPLETELY agree! I remember rushing to imdb to see how many awards he won for that performance. I was shocked to learn that there wasn't even a nomination for it. It was literally the definition of outstanding.
What a wonderful treat this show is! Seriously, so cool off you all to continue to give the show and fans the attention we crave. Probably my three favorite characters in this episode!
Truly underrated in the Current fandom... before Burnham, Before Janeway and Seven, and stronger than Troi and Crusher, and more present than Nyota... there was KIRA! And honestly, Burnham being second, the Kira character arc and story had to be the best defined and fleshed out female character in the whole franchise... she legit went through hell and back to be a different person from when we first meet her, and “Duet” is the very first significant step, we see, in her transformation... it’s astonishing that Nana Visitor doesn’t get more praise from the mainstream for how she acted in the series, especially even before NYPD Blue and ER was doing strong fleshed our female character roles, week after week... it’s a travesty, really.
Oh man you are so lucky to have been able to chat and converse with her...I've had a crush on her since I first saw her and she is still hot as fire to this day.
Truly a great written and acted episode...one of my all time DS9 favorites...Big thanks to Nana for randomly answering something I've always wondered.. Do actors ever dream in character?
Not gonna lie, every time I see Nana Visitor without the ridges... My knee jerk response, FOR A SECOND NOW, is repeatedly: “Wait... what happen to her nose?! Was she in an accident?! Who took her ridges?” And then I catch my self and say, “Oh wait, that’s actually her real face! Right... Smh lol”
Cirroc looks chubby in his cheeks he always looked so thin on the show.Nana Visitor seems like a really happy person in general. To be honest I liked her Intendant Kira character more.It was cool seeing her act really different in some ways and her character was way more interesting.I felt the same about Smiley but I found obrien to be so boring and that has nothing to do with the actor.Rip Nog see Aron was lucky his part was given a much bigger arc just like Damar. If I was an actor I would want an arc like that.
Nana Visitor looks like my sister. She became a stripper and took the name Pinky Tuscadero and then after about 20 years of stripping, she found Jesus. After she left the business she started a program to do an outreach to help girls get jobs and get out of stripping. She told me about how she was so heart broken over so many girls and women telling her how they wished they stayed in school and got a 9 - 5 job. Nana seams like that kind of person... to fight for setting people free. People who want to be free. Some ladies like stripping, but the ones who want out should have a path. Eventually she married... 3 more times and moved. I just found out her 6th husband died recently.

Oh my, this is only 2 weeks before Aron passes away. RIP Aron Eisenberg
Should have won an Emmy !
To me, Duet is what kicks off DS9. Fantastic episode.
I think Emissary kicks it off, but Duet is where it figures out what it is
Nana Visitor is so incredibly gifted.
Kira Nerys was an early favorite character of mine when I first saw "Emissary" in Jan. of 1993.
So great that you folks had her on your show.
I saw her on Night Court back in the 1990's. A very young. Nana Vistor.
Same here. By far my fav. Star Trek-Female-Charakter, playt by a sexy, talented actress.

First season DS9 had a few oddballs, but this episode made people realize "whoa, this show is going to be something different."
Regarding Harris Yulin and the emotions evoked during this episode, remember that he was essentially playing two different characters. He was an almost over the top psychopath and then transitioned to a victim himself within seconds.

Nana/Kira needs to be in Picard for a few scenes/episodes. Would be amazing.
Love you guys! Not a "Discovery" fan, so won't discuss it. But I'm willing to talk about Classic Trek any time 💛💙❤🖖
Why do you feel the need to point that out?
Probably my favorite episode of the entire series. Fantastic work by all.

Was definite episode, and Nana was fantastic and one of the most intriguing character. Her relations with the other characters were so deep.

Great question from Aron and a very important answer from Ms. Nana.
I seriously teared up watching this episode. I really loved it
RIP Aron.😢
I am so sorry for your loss!!!
Such an amazing episode!
i love these! i wish they were longer..
They are longer if you become a supporter.
Links under the video in the description.
Nana still has that million dollar smile.
Oh man you are so lucky to have been able to chat and converse with her...I've had a crush on her since I first saw her and she is still hot as fire to this day.
I think the white hair makes her look stunning
One of the most shocking scenes of DS9 when the Bajoran in the Jack Ruby style, stabs Maritza to death on the Promenade.
Truly a great written and acted episode...one of my all time DS9 favorites...Big thanks to Nana for randomly answering something I've always wondered.. Do actors ever dream in character?
It was a crazy powerful episode! Easily top 5 of the series.
This is the first episode I've seen and it was great!
Very cool episode! :)
Duet is by far my favorite episode. Major Kira is a strong, passionate, feminine character.
OMG!!!! NINA!!!!!
Right... Smh lol”
Is it possible that Nana is getting better looking with age?
If there was ever a way to get me to actually go to Patreon it's to have Nana involved. ❤☺
Aron looked good considering he only had two weeks left. ;*(
Greatness
There is a fan movie based on this episode: th-cam.com/video/gviH8wrupOk/w-d-xo.html
