WTF is an Adult Green Belt in BJJ ?

  • In today's video I answer a question from Josh who is an adult Green Belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. Now some of you may be a little confused since Green Belts in Jiu-jitsu are usually saved for teenagers and kids (which I'll explain).
But with that, he's getting ready for a BJJ competition, and he wants to know what to compete since there are no adult Green Belt divisions.
So in this video I share some ideas from my own experience as a former adult Green Belt back in 2004 when I was a newer student in BJJ.
I also tell a story about a stinky white belt. Not a person white belt. . . my actual belt.
Enjoy the video and thanks for watching.

An adult green is a tradition used by BJJ coaches that also have a background in Judo. These academies tend to emphasize takedowns more and usually do not give out stripes.

Butt my one major issue with belts is that it almost implies that once you receive the belt ,that part of your training is over or something and alot of people rarely ever go back and do any of the training they did to get the belt, and training never ends. You are never done, so no real need for the belts lol

Great video! Brings me memories... Here in Brazil, at the 90ties, we had the green belt. I my self was a green belt that was promoted by Jucão, a top notch blackbelt from here that lives in the US now. In fact at that time was very difficult to get the blue and the green was common. Now a days they still exists here as you say as tap in the back, but they are not so common...
    Thumbsup!

This right here. One of my old instructors was Brazilian, from Brazil and he also used green belts between white and blue. It just meant that you were better (maybe not better, but less spassy) than a brand new white belt, but not quite a blue belt. I kinda liked the concept myself. In comp we would compete as white belts though, or at least I did at the time.

I see a few green belts at competitions. My understanding it was for kids and not adults. I know at Carlson-Gracie you cannot get a blue belt till your 16 that’s why they have multiple color belts for kids. I think it’s for motivation our Sensei tells the kids every 28 classes they get a stripe but belt promotions are at his discretion. I just got my blue belt at 2 1/2 years and another adult student who has three years and shows up consistently and is still a white belt so Sensei watches carefully to see if students are ready to be promoted. I feel good that I picked the right school because he’s not just handing out belts.

😄🤣Funny story!! It actually reminded me of incident that happen in our unit back when I was in service..so I know what you mean about the funk🤢😄.We went on a field training exercise which was like camping 🏕 without the luxuries. Guys in my unit spend a solid week in field doing activities like diving in rivers, crawling on dirt, running ,sweating ect. Well by the end of the week our uniforms which we barley change smelled awful but since we were around each other I guess we got accustomed to each other stinky smell. When we went back to our Units Barracks that Sunday (End of Ex) night a few guys were too tired and exhausted to change bath. So they went straight to bed😷..next morning when we formed up to go to breakfast their were a few guy who hadn't even bath nor change their uniform. So our supervisors/Sgt passed our group and was shocked and disgusted 🤢by our smell. Some of these guys tried to cover the smell by spraying AXE and Cologne which obviously didn't work..The Sgt basically said that we smell like we all just had a passionate night with a Bigfoot..and gave us a spew about how Suga & Onions don't mix 😄 nor matter how sweet sugar is it will never mask the taste and smell of onions when sprinkled on. The Sgt.basically made everyone(even those that were cleaned up) go back to bathe and change..we wasn't going anywhere near the dining facility with our smell as one if them said..So I get where you coming from with your story chewy😁 it was😄 👍...love the videos.

Sorry for the OT post, but I really need some feedback from you guys. I'm the whitest belt which ever whited. Today we had a drill: me on side control, an older striped blue belt under me, his goal was to escape. I lift weights, I've got some strength. I kept him pinned down, even though I felt like I was dying in the end. Other advanced belts were giving him pointers during the whole thing - not to me though. Later I overheard him saying to his buddies I'm a spaz. I feel pretty down now - I don't wanna quit but goddamn, I felt so alone. Some (honest!) feedback would be great to have.

Don't me too hard on yourself, most people are spazs when they start and higher belts complain a lot if a lower belt is able to compete with them. Just focus on the techniques, keep showing up and you'll be fine.

Don’t feel discouraged. I don’t know anything about you but I’m sure you are right where you are supposed to be at your level of experience. You’ll do things now and for the next 6-12 months that you’ll look back on and laugh about in the future…especially when you see people doing the same things.

I'm a white belt and I've been told I'm spazzing. Didn't put my off at all. I took it as constructive criticism as the people in my gym are always looking to help each other get better

Outmuscling and keeping a guy in side control doesn't make a spaz. Now, maybe other stuff you does, just not what you're describing here.
Generally I give coaching to guys for two reasons, either I coach the person I perceive as the underdog, or I'm working with someone on specific things (usually someone prepping for a comp). Or I heckle, definitely enjoy heckling but I would never do to someone I don't know well. In this case it suggests that he SHOULD have been able to escape and couldn't, therefore prompting his friends to coach.
All that said, it's hard to give a solid read based on the limited info. I would suggest working to make it clear that you're seeking to learn not just goon stuff. "Hey, I felt like I was holding you down purely through brute strength and definitely couldn't progress. What would have made my positioning better and/or set me up to progress forwards?" Assuming that they're actually good dudes and this isn't some toxic clique crap.

An adult that has a bjj green belt, probably trained bjj throughout childhood and received it as a teenager. Thats the last colored belt a kid/teenager can get before getting a blue belt as an adult. A green belt probably has close to over 10 years of training bjj. Competing against a white, blue and probably even a purple belt would be extremely unfair, as the green belt should be very high level bjj. I have a nephew who earned his green belt from Jean Jacques years ago, is now an adult collegiate wrestler, and he mops up brown belts...Look up the young lady Sasha the Shark, I think shes an orange belt and she destroyed an adult white belt in competition...

A green belt is a upper level white belt who's not yet ready for blue belt but is better than the most white belts, its essentially like a 3-4 stripe white belt. Could have just Said that then told the story

  • @lorikislack1504

At most gyms I've been to, green belt is the highest belt you can get as a juvenile...so it's kinda like an kid black belt. When you turn 16 and are eligible for a blue belt, you switch from green to blue (sometimes white If appropriate). I don't think a 16 yr old white belt is equivilent to a 15 yr old green belt (black belt) in knowledge . So to even out the rub, we sometimes go straight to blue for 15>16 yr old green belts. We did, however, have a white belt with a blue stripe down the middle to serve the same purpose your coach was going for. I suppose now days everyone uses stripes to denote particular belt levels. When I started we didn't even do stripes or other colors. The only stripes I ever got were on my black belt.
