    I purchased a two and a half foot pole as a joke a year or two ago, attempted to use it, and was utterly dissapointed when the reel was not only the crappiest I've ever used, but made of the cheapest nastiest plastic. I put that pole away, until now. I'd recently dug up my old supplies, figured out that this thing still existed, and thought, "You know, this might be fun to try and restore." I ended up going back to my old stash, finding a slightly less cheap Shakespeare child's reel, because that's the only thing that would fit, and cleaned both rod and reel up. I started to watch this tutorial, because I mostly work with spinning reels, and not spincasters, did everything correctly, except that when I started to reel, the line would not wind around the center piece to be re-spooled. i tried doing what this very helpful guy said at least three times, and still had the same problem. I need to know why this is happening, but it's not urgent because this was a basket case anyway. If anyone with answers knows, can you comment some tips on how to fix it below?

    • @garygarrison1890
      @garygarrison1890 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      there should be a small pin on the rotating mechanism that catches the line inside the cone. this is what physically wraps the line onto the reel.
      either your line isn't tight enough on the spool and the spool is spinning inside the loop (and not retrieving) or the pin isn't catching the line properly.

    • @oliviaohara3132
      @oliviaohara3132 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gary Garrison, never mind. I ended up taking it fully apart, saw the pin, and it worked, but only if I turned the screw inside. I then figured out the problem is that the gear that spins the screw was no longer spinning. This happened because the plate that is normalIy attached to the gear and actual cranking device itself was detached from the gear. I attempted to hot glue gun it (yes, I'm an idiot, and no, it didn't work because of the oil inside) I then in a desperate attempt tightened the bolt on the outside, and when I got the perfect combination it finally worked. The problem is that it will keep disconnecting, so you have to play with it. The problem is, this keeps happening, so even if you get a small fish (bluegill, baby perch, etc) on that joke of a rod you'll be fighting for an hour with not the fish, but the reel itself. I might just bin the whole thing, or see if I have another crappy reel to try. It's not worth my time or money to restore it if it fails again. I'll just use my ugly stik and shimano spinning reel combo from now on.

      been using braided on my zebco 888 for several years now without issues, braid will not hurt any rod or reel if its rated for braided line, i use titanium guides on all my rods so no issues on any of those , thanks American tackle.

    • @richardhudson7206
      @richardhudson7206 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not using braid on a spin cast reel is true for most reels of that type. The braid is more abrasive than mono or flouro and can damage the small line pick up pins as the line is reeled in. However, as stated by another, there are spin cast reels that can use braided line. I have two Zebco Big Cat (catfish reels) spincast reels and they are rated to use braided line. I have 40lb braid on them and have no problems with them.
      There are other large Zebco reels that are rated for braid and possibly other manufacturers models. Just be informed of what the rod or reel is rated for before you buy it .

    You forgot the direction the filler spool is held.Your reel should turn the same direction the filler spool unwinds. If not your line will twist.lay the spool on the floor and make Shure your reel is winding the same direction the reel is giving off.

      What does that even mean? I'm just getting twist

    • @TylerGreenMusic
      @TylerGreenMusic 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@genjutsu123 Basically you want the line to come off the top of the new spool of line and onto the top of the reel if that makes sense. The line retains memory so if you're reeling it onto your reel while the lines coming off the bottom of the spool, you will be wrapping it the opposite direction that it was just sitting on the spool which will cause it to want to not sit properly on your reel

    • @genjutsu123
      @genjutsu123 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@TylerGreenMusic appreciate the reply. Hard for me to understand without seeing what you mean though. Does this mean when I make my knot I want it to sit at the top of the reel when I put the cover back on and start reeling the new line in?

    • @TylerGreenMusic
      @TylerGreenMusic 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@genjutsu123 yeah I believe so if I understand you correctly. Think of it like winding film or something from one reel to another. You want it to go on in the same direction (counter clockwise) as its coming off. Hard to explain without visuals but if you look up videos on how to spool a baitcaster, they should mention this and show you.

    Step one: Burn it and buy a spinning reel

      Well people with kids who use a spin caster might want to know since their kids break the line a lot or snag a lot might want to be able to just put fresh line on.

      That's what i was gonna say. Open spool reels are far superior. 🤘

    Can I get away with using 8lb test braid on a spincast and have a fluorocarbon leader?

      Bait caster's suck in my opinion because its so easy to get a birds nest and sometimes the birds nest doesn't come out and you have to put all new line on. You will spend hours trying to learn how to use a bait caster. What I use is an open face spinning reel, not push button like this video, with braid and a fluorocarbon leader. I was able to learn this reel in just 20 minutes and I hardly ever get anything even remotely close to a birds nest on this reel. Bait caster's are expensive pieces of junk. The only thing they got going for them is the fact that they are very light weight.

      Zzzzzz... Dude if you dont have experience fishing I wouldnt use a baitcaster because they have a learning curve to it spinning reels are good because they're easy to use but I wouldn't call a baitcaster junk a baitcaster is way better than a spinning because baitcasters are light,powerful,and can handle a lot of line

      I am not new to fishing dude. Been fishing my entire life in fact. I started on the spinning reel about 6-7 years ago. I fish about 2-3 times a week. Yes bait casters are really light but there are not that good. Spinning reels depending on which one, can be very light, powerful, and can also handle a lot of line. I simply disagree with you, you have your own opinion and I have mine. End of story.
