    Great custom 3-D Printed lids to allow for the light and filter/bubbles for air into the water. Cool to see that mother Sea-Monkey eating the algae in that one view. You are right, feeding too much too soon can be bad for the tank and brine shrimp. Good tip about the nursery for the babies. Cool Sea-Monkey Figure too. Great tips as usual, thanks!

      Absolutely, but that first month or so that it takes to get them to adulthood can be a little tricky, especially if it's your first time. Once that's out of the way, and especially once you have algae established, just feed them and top up the water as necessary. They're probably easier to care for than the average houseplant.

It's been a week and I'm still not seeing anything, so I found my way here. Hey John! Wanted to thank you for all your tips on hatching and raising brine shrimp! Using your advice, I set up a little 7L tank with a little heater and air line (though I needed a bigger heater than the USB one lol!), and now I have dozens of babies swimming happily! I tried with sea monkeys first, but alas, the packets had absorbed moisture and were full of goop, so I ended up getting some artemia salina eggs intended for brine shrimp hatcheries. I have some astaxanthin on the way to feed them too, so hopefully soon they’ll be cute and pink! Thank you for all your advice 🥰🥰🥰
    I wanted to ask, do you know if anything can share a tank with them? I know some aquarium snails can tolerate surprisingly high salinities, have you ever seen any in a brine shrimp tank?

    • @pico-cosmos
      @pico-cosmos  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      That's exciting! Good luck with your new tank. I'd highly recommend trying to culture live microalgae to feed them to increase your chances of success 👍 In my video review of the Sea-Monkeys Big Show tank I show some aquatic snails :) and my video review of the Spongebob Plenty O Plankton set shows copepods which also work as tank mates.

    Thank you very much for the video and the tips. I fed my sea monkeys often, so from the fifth day onwards I fed them a few drops of the liquid food once a day (for example 4 drops in 4 teaspoons of water) and then I put one or two drops in their mouth I've done it in the tank, now I hardly have to feed them at all anymore, I store the finished food in the fridge, mix it with warm water and then put it in the tank, I've also put yeast in it, it really smells now... 🤢🤮 but whatever, They're still doing pretty well, unfortunately I only have brown algae in the water but I'll get rid of them somehow.

    Hi John! I was wondering, if growing algae is essential for a thriving sea monkey colony, can you pre-grow them and then add the eggs later? Would that be viable?
    What do I do if I live in a place that isn't near the sea at all, I doubt there are any saltwater algae particles in the air here.

    • @pico-cosmos
      @pico-cosmos  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I think yes, algae is essential for a healthy Sea-Monkey tank long-term. You could try to grow algae, but tbh the best way is to just set up a Sea-Monkey tank and let it happen naturally. I live very close to the ocean so I don’t have any experience keeping Sea-Monkeys inland. I’d recommend just trying your best to see what happens. You can also purchase live algae online 👍

    Please don’t say I’m the only person who bought their kids sea monkeys for a summer project and is now completely invested….. new tank, air pump and heater all set up in my bedroom 🤣🤣🤣
    I have another question I only have full sunlight windows what is best to do? X

    • @pico-cosmos
      @pico-cosmos  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Full sunlight would likely make the tank too hot. I’d recommend keeping them somewhere in the shade with a lamp pointed at the tank 👍

      @@pico-cosmos I did this and have small air pump and have the heater set to 26 degrees. And they still all died. I set it all up again with a new set and they hatched but died day 5. You might have already answered this somewhere, but what water treatment do you use for setting up a nursery tank or second tank? Do you have to buy more sea monkey water purifier packets, or is there a cheaper way to make the water safe?

    • @jic1
      @jic1 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I found one tablespoon of coarse sea salt to every 500ml of water works just fine. As he said in the video, use bottled water.

    • @pico-cosmos
      @pico-cosmos  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The easiest way is to just buy a second Sea-Monkey tank yeah. You can do a DIY tank, but it’s more complicated and takes some practice

    • @jic1
      @jic1 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@pico-cosmos As somebody who once attempted a completely from scratch tank (i.e. generic brine shrimp eggs, no official Sea-Monkey products at all) and failed miserably after several attempts, you're right (although I've got the rest of the eggs in the freezer, so I might give it another go someday now that I know more). However, I found simply transferring Sea-Monkeys from my 'official' colony to my DIY tank to be incredibly easy. Maybe I was just lucky, I don't know. I think an important factor for success was that I took a couple of pipettefuls of the sludge from my established tank and put them in the new one, so I had a head start on establishing algae and other useful microorganisms.

    • @pico-cosmos

      Sounds like they might have black spot disease 😬 you could try increasing the salinity and adding some more calcium into the tank 👌

  • @jascow
    @jascow 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Do you have a good salt to water ratio? Google keeps changing and it doesnt taste as salty as my seamonkey tanks

    • @pico-cosmos
      @pico-cosmos  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Exact salinity isn’t particularly important for brine shrimp - anywhere from 15-50 ppt should work fine. I usually aim around 25ppt with my DIY tanks 👍

    • @jic1
      @jic1 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I found that one tablespoon of coarse sea salt (chosen because that's what I had in my kitchen) to every 500ml of water worked just fine when I set up my second tank. The shrimp I transferred from my original were perfectly happy.

    John, I have a question. I have Sea Monkeys that are mating and have darkish egg sacs. I have another female not mating and her egg sac is white. I actually had another female with a white egg sac, and one day, I looked and there were babies everywhere! I'm guessing she live birthed them, as her egg sac was empty? So my question is, Is this likely the asexual type of reproduction? With the white egg sac, and no male attached? Thank you for your kind help! Your videos have made my Sea Monkeys on Mars quite happy!

    • @pico-cosmos
      @pico-cosmos  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Female Sea-Monkeys will live birth their young when environmental conditions are favourable. As far as I’m aware, the method of reproduction (sexual or pathernogenetic) doesn’t influence whether they produce cysts or live birth 👍
