So sad watching this for the first time in 2022, I love both Primer and Upstream Colour, what a unique and promising voice. So open and honest, such clear drive... gives me even less hope for the future of films than I already had.

Well… unfortunately he sabotaged any chance of success. He has some serious allegations of abuse and a restraining order by his ex/ the upstream color actress who’s also an amazing director. Then he went on a psychotic tirade on twitter and self destructed his career lol. Really sad. Would’ve loved to see his movie A Topiary or The Modern Ocean

@@jamesrichardson469 definitely, the whole thing, as it’s publicly understood, is really unfortunate. Specifically talking about the early period of his career though (post Primer - the release of UC) it’s nuts how deflating it must have been for him to try and attempt to work with financiers and producers to get subsequent projects made (I guess notably A Topiary). Carruth’s writing and craft, at least from my perspective, seems to stand high above his contemporaries and it’s for sure discouraging to know that someone with projects and concrete ideas that unique and intelligent struggled so much initially, despite the undeniable success and public support of Primer.

@@ILoveDavidLynch I think Carruth's inability to get the money men to green- light his projects drove him nuts. I am not saying that excuses his abusive behavior, threatening tweets, etc. It does not. Welles was thwarted--he fell a lot harder and farther than Carruth did--but he still went on making movies. He stooped, he demeaned himself, he did whatever he had to do to scrounge up money for his projects. Carruth didn't have that flexibility and resilience of character. When he lost the chance to make his movies his way, it destroyed him. The abuse, giving away his scripts, etc. is just the wreckage floating to the surface.

It's so cool that Shane was able to do this with such a small team and budget, even doing the blow up he refused to change the film for the money.

      "Upstream Color".

Filmed Primary March 2001, 3 years post production.
A shame we won't see Topiary, Shipping News or Modern Ocean.
He is too good for the modern film industry.

Sounds like he’s talking about “Shattered Glass” before the interview starts. Solid movie.

Seems like the interviewer might have been hitting on something when she mentioned danger. Spending 9 years on A Topiary only to fail and then make something like Upstream Color seems indicative of that. If Carruth had made Upstream Color right after Primer and made a few more stepping stone films I think he could have had a better chance at making something as ambitious as A Topiary or The Modern Ocean.
