K130 - K123 Tail Blade Testing

  • A lot of people recommended this to me as a better option than stock. That's true and the high pitch strained noise is much reduced along with marginally better holding at higher headpseed in reverse hurricanes than other options, specifically above 60% headspeed. Not in anything else in my experience though at any headspeed and here's why I don't like it on my K130...
It's much worse at just holding in a hover with wind and if not kept moving, will move on it's own. Just a few small pitch pumps produce large movements left and right and it can feel very smooshy but not predictably like I find with the stock tail. Almost like it's too large for the available torque or the FBL needs tail precomp adjusting for it which we simply can't do. As for other things like tic tocs, it's perhaps better than stock but so much worse than the ladybird and the parrot props it's not even funny. This might be me being able to deal with tails blowing one way only and only while stressed rather than moving both ways often in even mild 3D but sloppy, mushy and unpredictable are how it feels which is a shame because it's looks great and I have major doubts a larger option will help at all meaning the parrot prop is probably as good as it's going to get. If you fly only nose first and mostly sport/circuits it may perform well but then again, stock has no issues there and doesn't make the tail motor as furiously hot either.
What has made me curious is some sellers are listing the tail motor replacements as 1s/3.7v but it's receiving 2s and gets hot, much hotter with larger tail blades. 2s versions do certainly exist but so far i've only seen them in 4 packs on aliexpress with 2 of each rotation for quads. There's rumours and whispers of the new, impending MG version of the K130 getting a true 2s tail motor but nothing solid that I am aware of yet. I have read reports of these performing much better with less heat which makes absolute sense but i'll be putting my effort into MG servos first as the stock ones stripping easily is a much higher frustration than not being able to do fast reverse flight hurricanes with this particular heli.
The parrot prop is going back on here and staying on here for the foreseeable future, my personal favourite by a clear margin.

There's several MG servo options but only these are cheaper than stock and what I purchased to try. Only negative is they don't come with correct connectors so soldering is required and it's twice the price for an option that is drop in.

Nice to see you posted another video Liam as I have learnt so much from watching your channel.

Wow! That is sucking a gale out there. I couldn't fly my little Gaui 200 in that.

Is this on a stock radio it came with? I have the K130 also, bound to my Futaba 14SG, when I increased the head speed at 85 idle up flat curve the Heli rotate to about 45-90..is my tail gain too low or too high? Tail gain set at 85 on idle up. Thanks

This was with the stock radio yes, I wanted to test tails out that way before moving it across to my T12 I fly it with now.
I'm not aware of any tail gain settings for the XK stuff, only rates, expo etc. What I think you are finding is the inability for the K110 to have a headpseed above 80% without affecting the tail. I found anything above 65 ish will affect the tail if using the stock tail rotor - as mentioned in my review and most other K110 videos, the tail is the worst out of all the XK helis I have flown from the K100 upwards. With a tail blade change it seems possible to push the headspeed up to around 80 without massive issues but above this reverse flight is just not great.
I have some true 2s tail motors to try that alongside the parrot prop, I hope will help get us to 100% rpm without such tail issues but how much that helps is a total guess.

Cool, thanks. I’m waiting for a few parts, upgrading the servos. Thinking of rebuilding my 380 since I have most of the parts for it. This Micro Heli is just to refresh my muscle memory, been off from flying.

I can't really find the parrot props in stock many places but these are the ones. micro-motor-warehouse.com/products/parrot-rs-propellers-66mm-1mm
These are the same but no parrot brand and available in colours, also much cheaper.

I found a 65mm blade comparison that Oscar did the other week, interesting read although the parrot brand weren't tested. I thought about trying the HQ ones he likes but I feel weight is perhaps more important than stiffness when used on a brushed heli tail rather than a brushless mini quad. oscarliang.com/micro-quad-propeller-shootout/#hq-micro-prop

Any word of getting the motors to run cooler? Mine run blazing hot!

Sorry for late reply, I have new job with very late finish and have not had much time to spend on RC projects and backlog of reviews and videos. Hopefully that will calm down soon and allow more time to enjoy RC and flying again.
Stock motor is 1s being run on 2s voltages so the only options I am aware of are:
#1. Stretch K120 tail motor heatsink over larger motor but this requires half tail motor cover to be removed and motor fixed in place so it cannot spin.
#2 Replace motor with same KV but 2S rating. The only ones I can find with actual KV ratings in 2S are via aliexpress in packs of 4 with 2 or each rotation. I plan to order some soon and try but I think Kiwi craig has fitted one. I asked if he would do basic tail testing and punch outs weeks ago but no results were posted by him other than it runs cooler than stock. Here is link if you feel like trying them, I am interested in your findings if you do. www.aliexpress.com/item/32892386754.html?spm=2114.search0604.3.202.628de0efjC2wGa&ws_ab_test=searchweb0_0,searchweb201602_10_10065_10130_10068_10547_319_317_10548_10696_10192_10190_453_10084_454_10083_10618_10307_10820_10301_10821_10303_537_536_10059_10884_10887_321_322_10103,searchweb201603_52,ppcSwitch_0&algo_expid=b809d4a7-e6a3-42e9-a40d-44afefc73d4c-29&algo_pvid=b809d4a7-e6a3-42e9-a40d-44afefc73d4c

@@MicroRCFiend I purchased a crashed K130. Still working out some severe vibrations. I think it's a jittery servo. It came with some Quad motors as spares. Not sure what they are lol. Surprised how hot the motors get and I haven't flown any 3D yet. 😕 Tail performance appears to be lacking on these. Can I run 100 IU or is 80 max for the tail?

@@curazyheart7143 Anything above 80 flat curve for headpseed will result in poor tail performance in reverse flight. It will hold well in tic tocs and everything other than reverse hurricanes if you have no excessive vibes and use a parrot props but so far that is the best I have found. I did not like the K123 tail blade at all on this stock heli and ladybird prop is not enough. Easily the weakest tail performance from the XK range of helis. If you plan on flying it lots I recommend the parrot tail blade drilled out to fit stock tail and MG servos. I have fitted some cheap JX servos from BG that are actually cheaper than stock and I wish I had done it much earlier. Stock servos feel ok in flights but are barely good enough and strip gears very very easy indeed even on tiny mistakes like improper landings.

@@MicroRCFiend Found the problem. The gyro was touching the cover. Flew two packs. GNB 550 HV at 100IU is a 3D ripper! 😸 Storm and high winds put a damper on things.

@@curazyheart7143 Glad you sorted the problem.
I hadn't really considered HV lipos since i'm not running it past 80 flat curve. Actually the 700mah were tempting me.
Or do they hold voltage better and still give longer flights than the 600mah stock?
I did order some 2s tail motors though, very curious about them as I think my tail is getting much worse in less than 50 flights total.
