    Another great instructional video, Ron, thanks for taking the time to post. My STS is coming along nicely, got the miter station built, am now making the saw horses, template already made for them. Always enjoy your video posts.

    Thanks, Ron. always like getting insight into your work flow and jigs.

    Nice and easy! If I am too lazy to use my big router I just need to get a 1/4" up cut bit and a cordless router and I am set to go. I don't have a table saw ( can't get Sawstop inUK) and having watched a few " safety videos" about them I don't think I will. I can cut the templates with the track saw with a little care. I recall you did use a hole saw on the earlier workstations and accepted that by using the first piece as the template the others were a tiny bit smaller but it didn't really matter.

    Thanks for posting this! I made two stations at once and ended up modifying hole size and used a 6” - wishing now I had your jig and made the templates. Great video!

    I really like that crosscut function. Next bench I will use a jig to force perfect alignment of the dog holes, rather than laying out with chalk lines and drilling by hand at the vertices.

    I have made the Paulk Workbench II and the Paulk miter stand and have found that using two to three 23 gauge pin nails holds the template well to the work piece and then I just pull it apart when done routing it. This results in almost no marks on the work surface.

    Ron. If I make the bench it would be less work to make two sides and not the third template. It seams like a lot of of work for one bench, unless I make more than one bench. I do like the way you made the template over the original hole saw.
    I like the smart trailer, I am inspired to make a version for my garage. Your videos and descriptions are as usual great.

      Plus there are the internal braces, the reason for the shorter template.

    I have 1/4” Dewalt heavy duty router and have had no end of trouble with bits to do this with an 12 or 18mm pattern and then the 18mm piece. I haven’t been able to successfully router more than one piece. There is not enough depth of cut and then if you try and get some extra length by pulling the bit out the bit can break and damage the bushing. I think all templates need a 1/2 shank router.

    Is that an off-brand battery I see in that router?
    Do you like them over the OEM?

      So far so good. I am testing them out. I made a video about them, but haven't posted it yet.

    Has Ron switched to Dewalt?

      I have said in soooo many videos that FT is my first choice, but FT doesn't make rough carpentry tools. I would go with all FT, but they specialize in fine woodworking tools not carpentry.

      Thanks for the clarification,I saw the Festool chargers in the latest trailer video and thought that you were green and black only.

    It is all clicking to me now. I had built a total station years ago but am now realizing that I never used it to it's full potential.

    Bushing are an added expense and added complexity you don't need.

    • @alphaclean3364
      @alphaclean3364 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's one opinion. Pattern bit bearings wear out. Bushings do not. Long term they will mitigate their own cost (like 25 bucks) and provide some options that you would not have with a straight bearing bit.

    • @TheSmartWoodshop
      @TheSmartWoodshop  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Not complex at all and cost less than a pattern bit. I have covered this topic a few times in past videos.

      For middle of a panel operations, it looks like bushings are the right tool. Pattern bits would require a full depth cut or a thicker template material. But also we tend to make what we have work at the time.

      [Programming, however, is the US English spelling, since the conventions accept doubling a consonant before adding 'ing'. Programing, however, is also an accepted spelling. ... Basically, the only difference is 'spelling' and both are correct and acceptable.]
