My Adhd often keeps me paralyzed in the research phase before diving into new interests. Dyslexia makes it so hard to understand all the information. I love the idea of creating these tracking forms but how do you even decide what to put down first? My poor brain.. my goals this year:
Keep on top of my new business and stop sh*ting myself in panic about it every day.
Take my Japanese grammar studies more seriously and ~actually~ learn it.
Learn and hopefully become rather skilled at archery- recurve bow.

A mantra I sometimes tell myself is that Action is the engine of motivation. Results in the form of improvement primarily come from action (sometimes they do come from inaction but that’s mostly in the form of rest and time to reframe) Results/gain are imo the greatest motivational booster. Especially when it comes to working on music related things.

  • @oarielbatista

What I understood is that, basically, you are talking about dedicating attention to learning the fundamentals of a skill and then spending the remaining time combining these fundamentals, which, in this case, you call side quests.
Basically, this is structured thinking. I use this to learn skills as well. It’s the best way to understand absolutely anything. Once we learn the fundamentals, the rest becomes much easier.
Keep making your videos; your approaches are very good.

Hello, thank you very much for this video! I feel like we have more or less the same journey. I'm 30 years old, a guitarist, trying to learn piano and many other instruments (maybe I'm a bit impulsive when it comes to buying instruments :D). I'm learning Spanish, I’ve started drawing again, I play video games, and I have so many interests that they’re sometimes very hard to manage. I often struggle with time management and tend to spread myself too thin across my activities, and that’s when I manage to work at all; sometimes distractions just take over...
I’ll try to put your approaches into practice to achieve specific goals this year and feel like I’m making progress in my projects! Thank you so much for your videos, I discovered your channel not long ago, and there’s really a lot of valuable content to take away from it! I wish you a Happy New Year :)

This video comes at such a good time. I am very multi-interested and I’ve always beat myself up for not being as consistent or disciplined as I wanted to be. I didn’t learn until recently that it’s because of my neurodivergent brain. I feel much more confident about taking on things I am really passionate in after watching this video. I’ll definitely be trying approach 1 and seeing how it works! It’s really comforting to know that other people go through this too. Thank you!! Happy new year!

I’ve been frustrated lately bc I was trying to force myself to use approach #2 and was even thinking I would have to brute force my way with approach #3 as the solution to my current failure to stick with my goals so thank you for reminding me there’s a better way!

I'm not done watching the video yet, but I want to leave notes as I come across them while watching. I think we've learned a lot of the same kind of things through our experiences and I like coming here and seeing what you have to say that might be different and to get some reminders.
Absolutely having something exact to focus on is important. It's underestimated how much energy and time it takes to come up with what you should do. I've even been practicing similarly to you lately, just with piano instead of guitar. I also think a very important thing that goes along with your one day at a time idea is to just break things down into the simplest problem or step possible and just practice that before moving on. It saves a lot of trouble later and it starts to get easier and easier. I also think it doesn't have to be 100% perfect, but it should be close and consistent. Sometimes you have to come back to it after a break and practice again and you find suddenly you can do whatever it was perfectly, even if you only practiced it for a few minutes yesterday and the day before. The break and just consciously and actively breaking down what you're practicing beforehand through a bit of a struggle and letting your brain figure it out during a rest is important. Really figure out what's going on with every part of it. Once. Then practice it again later. It's more important than sitting there grinding for a very long time.
Don't overload yourself with information. Maybe watch/study from a few things, then just do it or get the main point. Also, acknowledge when those resources really aren't giving you anything useful and it's okay to just skim it for anything useful you can actually apply or think about. I did this even in school. They give you all this study material and when I realized while giving it a go I wasn't really getting anything out of it, I just skipped it and if I needed it for an assignment or test then I came back to it. Often times I didn't, and I saved myself tons of time and energy. You can always come back to it later if you realize it was useful and you just didn't know how at the time. This is a lot more efficient than wasting your time trying to squeeze something out of a learning resource that might not even be there. You can't force information into your brain. It has to become relevant first. Respect your time and be honest that nobody remembers everything, and you aren't going to, and you don't have to no matter how many people make it seem like you do.
Yeah, do the things you dread doing and that are the most tiring as soon as possible after waking up. Yup, declutter everything. Every little thing that takes a little more effort than it has to adds up a lot more than you think. This comes down to even simple things like if you have to think about how to take things out to get a simple task done. Stop that. Just make it so you don't have to think about and nothing is in your way. Get things out of your way. Mentally too. Stop and notice when anything gives you any extra steps that are annoying and that can be eliminated.
If you didn't do your day perfectly, don't sweat it. You end up wasting more time worrying. Just get something done and do it and don't think about it and make the most of that time. You can end up saving what you thought was a wasted day because you just sat down and focused even when you thought you squandered your time already and end up more efficiently using that time than you did on a "perfect" day.
Don't think about what you're doing while you're doing it to the extent you're feeling bad about how long it's taking or other distracting thoughts. Just focus on what you're doing.
Be consistent. Do the things you need to do every day no matter how small the time investment is. This is crucial.
Learn to accept the feeling that you're not improving or remembering. If you're consciously thinking about what you're doing, you are. You just don't know it until later. It all happens subconsciously.
Even if you never think about it again, really think about and write down where you want to be in 1-5 years. Make a realistic goal, and then make the ridiculously highly ambitious version of that goal and write both down. You'll be surprised how if you really want those things this helps keep them on your mind and how much progress you'll make even if you never consciously think about it again.
With approach #3, I got to the point where my enjoyment comes from doing these things more than things people typically find "fun". Like you, I never used to be this way. It gets to that point if you really want to do something. Once you get to the point it feels bad to miss a day and you look forward to doing it you've pretty much won against the struggle. But you still have to show up every day.
Having a separate computer/room where you never install or have anything distracting helps a ton if you can do that. I have a laptop I use specifically for studying and I never use my for fun desktop computer for studying and never install anything that's just for fun on my laptop.
It also helps if you keep people around who value these kinds of things and constant self-improvement too. It helps a lot. You also just start to be attracted to these kinds of people more the more competent you get at all these approaches. You'll be surprised by how they aren't your usual idea of who you think the kinds of people who can and do do these things are. A lot of them will be the same kinds of people you always liked, with the same interests and values overall as you, but those of them who decided to take action in this direction. That's all. I used to think a lot of people who worked this hard had personalities that didn't match mine or had no chill, but that isn't true at all. They come in all types. They just started putting in the effort into being disciplined and wanting to improve or create things consistently.
One last very important thing: don't underestimate how much a healthy and clean diet and sleeping on time can change and how much more efficient it will make you. Also, have little routines that are fun that lead into your focus time. For example, I always make a drink like tea or coffee and maybe a small snack before I really sit down and focus on things early in the day for an extended period. It both primes yourself and gives you healthy energy to sustain the focus.

Hey this is only a simple and maybe a bit stupid question, but do you think a lot of listening is an okay replacement for flashcards? I can never get them to work on my device 😮‍💨
Unfortunately I can't watch shows in the language I'm learning, but I can play games in it! It's an okay manner to get my brain thinking in it a bit sometimes! Lots of strange vocabulary sometimes though!

    • @vaughngene
      @vaughngene  2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

I actually think listening is better than flashcards tbh,
Flashcards are nice IF you can spin that for real world practice. But listening is natural.
But make sure it’s active listening (most of the time).
& You’ll want to be looking up words you don’t recognize and trying to make meaning of what you are hearing.

Like a 6 hours a day type routine.
      Something like,
2 hrs Vocab, 2 hrs listening practice (active), 2 hours speaking practice.
      -
But 1 month you can have pretty smooth basic conversations imo. Like small talk and some extra.

@ I would say watch a podcast, and listen and repeat after BOTH speakers.
You can also ask Chat GPT to generate a conversation between two people.
And then practice speaking that out loud.
Correct and learn from your mistakes as you go.

I would reference the Too Many Interest videos, part 2 mainly titled ‘not enough time’,
And then try to create your own.
I’d have to have a lot of information to teach you that, but in general, I tend to find my routines by creating them and then trying them.
And if it doesn’t work or it’s unrealistic, I change it.
Eventually you’ll find something that feels manageable.
However I can give a few examples in a future video so there’s something to model from.
Overall idea is trial and error though.
      Hope that helps for now.

If yes. You have been cloned, or... am I the clone?
