Can't tell you how much I've loved these "The History of Godzilla..." series. Look forward to it every time I see a notification! Well done man. This was one of the first Godzilla movies I watched after the original Gojira as a child, and really made me an Anguirus fan....or as I affectionately referred to him as a kid, "Pokey monster". Great video!!

This flick is one of the first Godzilla movies I watched as a kid and it remains one of my favorites. The production design, the gunfights, the bad dummy suicide fall, the big monster throw down. You can’t ask for much more! Thanks for this and all your other history videos, they’re awesome. 👍

My father took me to see this in the theater way back when...about 1970. And likely seen it a dozen times in reissues for Saturday matinees. It remains a great favorite...and one of the few dubs I watch (the original AIP version that is). To my 8 year old eyes...it was the greatest thing ever.

I am so glad that your parents had you and encouraged your Godzilla addiction (I think they're called enablers) , for you have made my life SOOOOO much easier !! I greatly appreciate all the time , research and energy you put into these amazing productions , not to mention the video production alone !! Anyway THANK YOU SO MUCH !! - Because , being born in 1967 (Yes , I am old) and being a 70's kid , I grew up on Monster Movies , Comic Books and Rock n Roll !! However , I am far too lazy to have done all this work myself !! This way , I just get to enjoy and learn from all your hard work and sweat !! Plus there's some good humor thrown in as a little bonus !! So , one more time - GREAT JOB AND THANK YOU VERY MUCH !! Oh yeah , there was no internet then , so there's no way I could have dug up even ten percent of that information !! By the way , your obsessive and meticulous deep-dive-digging is mind blowing !! You could use those skills as say .... oh , maybe a detective , perhaps ?

Sometime in the early 70's, without actually telling my parents where I was going, I took off on a Saturday afternoon and caught a double bill of DAM and its opening act, Yog Monster from Space. The theater was only a mile or so away. The latter film bored the hell out of me and I've never seen it since. Destroy All Monsters on the big screen was amazing. At that age seeing multiple Toho monsters in one film blew my little mind.

This was the first Godzilla movie I saw. Watched it on TV at the age of four in 1974. Still remember seeing Mothra destroy that train and then Toyko get destroyed. This is the "All Star" of Toho Kaiju movies. That's why it's very popular. The plot could have been alot better, but the big fight scene is what makes it so loveable. Good job as always with your analysis! Keep it up!👍

I saw this at a drive-in in South Jersey back in 1970. It was the main movie of a triple feature along with 'Ghidrah, The Three-Headed Monster' and 'The Green Slime'. I can still remember being in the back of my parents Rambler station wagon and watching the final battle. Not gonna lie, This is my favorite Godzilla movie and for a time when I was a kid, it was my favorite movie bar none. I loved it so much in fact that my parents even bought it for me for my 10th birthday, so it was also the first movie I ever owned. Still one of my favorites despite the lack of monster action, the final battle makes up for it. Imagine if Final Wars had followed this more closely and had a massive melee at the end with the Earth monsters breaking free of the Xillians' mind control and battling Gigan and Keizer Ghidorah. Zilla would have really redeemed himself if he got to lunge atop Keizer Ghidorah and start mauling him as an homage to Gorosaurus and his tide-turning kangaroo kick.

I remember seeing Varan in the closing bit as a kid and was always very confused. I spent a lot of time with the movie paused just trying to figure out who he was and why he seemed to be floating. I also had been confused as who Baragon was since he only was in the one scene. At one point, I thought maybe Varan was Baragon, before just settling on it being some weird monster they never mentioned.

    • @Headless_Bill
      @Headless_Bill 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Yeah that always confused me too. Varan was never mentioned by name in the movie as far as I remember and despite being a "gliding" monster he always seemed to be eerily floating when on camera. Also a shame that they didn't use the Baragon suit for the Paris sceens; creates a bit more confusion when the dubbing mentions him but Gorosaurus is shown.

    • @evenhartwick4422

same they were only on screen for like a matter of seconds makes me wonder why they were even included at all. I'm sure Toho must have had costumes that were in better condition to use hell, i don't even think their suits even looked that bad i think they could have been given more screen time without it being to distracting. they literally have blink and you miss it cameos especially Varan

As a kid I was a good kaiju artist, I made extra allowance/comics money drawing pictures for my classmates. Back in the 70's a local TV station aired afternoon themed movies. Sci fi, Space and Japanese movies kept me busy with monster requests . Oh to the good ol days 🐲

This was my fave Godzilla movie when I was a kid, for the exact reason you said: it had the most monsters in it. Back then (early-mid 70's) the only way to watch was a local TV station here in Los Angeles. They would play these on M-F rotation from 8-10pm in a given week (same movie all week Lol). I remember some weeks they would do Godzilla, and other weeks they would do Gamera. Monster Zero was the standard weekday G movie and Destroy All Planets was the standard Gamera movie they would play. Destroy All Monsters for some reason wasn't shown during M-F, but instead played weekends/Sundays usually like 6pm LOL. Not sure why... anyways, the only way to see G movies back then was like this (before VCR's even). Saturdays I remember they would play some different ones sometimes (Godzilla's Revenge with Minya and Gavera, or Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster). Thanks for going in detail about the different monsters. I specifically remember seeing Varan jumping into the sky in that one shot and always wonder WTF was that??? One thing is the version I watched was english dubbed (of course) and the giant spider was always referred to as Speega (not Kumonga). Any idea why? I grew up thinking the spider was Speega, but everyone else talks about it as Kumonga LOL...

Though today I kinda think fondly of it. Yeah it was just part of the film but any memory of my dad is a rather fond one. Especially since I’m getting into kaiju films.
(I still don’t remember if it was this film but still a nice memory.)

I remember making my mom buy this movie for me on VHS for my 11th birthday because I couldn't find it anywhere, and had always wanted to see it! That same box art had me entranced at Suncoast video, but they closed before I could go back to buy it!

24:32 2nd monitor from the left, the bumble from 'Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer' makes an appearance.
Also, Godzilla's son, Minilla, is identified as 'Minilla' in only one Godzilla movie, 'Godzilla's Revenge' which technically is not a real monster movie. The monster fight scenes in that movie are only from a boy's imagination. No other Godzilla movie identifies Godzilla's son by name.
Also further, am I the only one who remembers a slightly different version of this movie, where the final fight had altered scenes; one, where Ghidorah lands feet first on Anguirus' back, and a second scene where Ghidorah flies over Gorosorus, whereafter Gorosorus dropkicks him. All the DVD versions of this movie that I have seen do not have these scenes.

I saw this as a kid not long after seeing the original Godzilla film. I have fond memories and in spite of it's faults, I still love it. I like the alien stuff, Moon stuff and shoot outs. I know Invasion of Astro Monster did it first but I still love DAM.

Your channel was something I would have died for as a kid. just to have all the wealth of knowledge on Godzilla. at the time in the 90s, man I had to dig to get any news. the Official Godzilla Compendium book was my Bible.

I was 6 when I saw the trailer of the American version on television. It was the first time I saw Godzilla and in my opinion, he looked great walking in Tokyo. When I was 7, I saw Destroy All Monsters late one summer night. The independent station at the time had a cut of the film that was different. At the end, I recall seeing deep space and listening to Akira Ifukube’s legendary march theme as the credits rolled. I may be wrong with this description but I do remember listening to the music at the end. Other nights and some weekend mornings and afternoons, I would, if I was lucky, would watch Rodan, Mothra and Monster Zero and War Of The Gargantuas on that independent station. Other stations shown other films.
My favorite scene in Destroy All Monsters was the scene where the Moonlight XY-3 crew use the cutting laser and Ifukube’s piece had an aggressive piece for piano, strings and percussion until the monster’s mind control device was severed. I remember bobbing my head up and down and side to side because I was really into the music and the scene.
The 1968 Godzilla suit is one of my all time favorites.

I’m sure people comment this quite a bit (and there are times I almost have before), but that opening you gave about that cover being the coolest thing you’ve ever seen is literally identical to my experience.
Down to the suncoast video (which I frequented often with my dad or grandma to buy Godzilla and DBZ stuff). Idk just thought it was cool.

Interesting note is that in the Japanese trailer of this film Godzilla, Rodan, Manda, and Mothra are attacking Tokyo before Godzilla "commands" an air raid on Tokyo as King Ghidorah flies over with Anguirus still hanging on to one of his necks till he's dropped by Ghidorah into the city and a big explosion occurs afterwards.
