I don’t understand how this even happened, there’s so much wrong 1. Why is he speeding 2. Why in child caution zone 3. How did his video editor not catch the second speed? He blurred the main speedometer but not the one on the passenger side? All of these mistakes are all his fault and totally stupid 🤦♂️🤦♂️ smh 🤦♂️🤦♂️
Honestly. Even if he did blur all the speedos it wouldn't take but a few minutes to determine how fast he was going from the distance he travelled in the short time. The whole clip was just a waste of time and nothing but hurting his reputation that has already taken a couple hits this year.
If there was a car he didn’t see in front of him, that could’ve ended his life. Going 3x the speed limit is beyond unreasonable, no matter how famous you are or how expensive your car is.
A girl at my college was killed on impact and dragged hundreds of feet when a guy did 70 through the pedestrian crosswalk in a 35mph zone. And Marques was doing 90?? He is extremely lucky that nobody was crossing the road, or that he didn't lose control of his car. After driving past a memorial full of flowers and candles for a girl who had her whole life ahead of her every day, I have zero patience for people who drive recklessly like this. It's NOT WORTH IT.
Well, this video said he didn't apologize for the mistake but he did on twitter with the full response. At least we are lucky no body got hurt and he apologized.
The twitter response wasn’t really that much of a apology response, neither. Absolutely no mention of why it’s bad, how it’s’s bad. No mentions on how he’ll improve on his mistake for the future. The whole 'going so fast he could have killed a child' part of this story has actually helped hide the backlash that this video was just a 9 minute advert that completely destroys his credibility as a genuine review channel and something he has spoken out against doing very vehemently in the past.
If I were the camera brand who sponsored him, I'd be beyond furious that he not only included footage of him committing a crime in the video, but also the fact he'd recorded it on the camera THEY PAID HIM TO PROMOTE

The reason people are pissed about the video being an ad is that Marques has branded himself on being this big honest tech reviewer who won’t let any sponsorships or gifts influence his reviews, and yet this entire video feels like one big ad. It’s a direct contradiction to everything he stood for
The rush isn't the same, sadly a track is awesome I've driven on tracks, but the risk is much less, the difference is like sex with a condom or without a condom. Without is just SOOO MUCH BETTER! That being said we all still wear condoms, so we wouldn't be assholes and go to the dessert or a racetrack if we wanted to drive 100 plus mph.
My issue with TH-cam sponsorships is the following: - Recently TH-cam has gotten greedier. Back in the day, I would get one commercial break at most, which was skip able after 5 seconds Now this is no longer the case. I would get 2-3 commercial breaks for a 15 min long video, with 2 or sometimes 3 commercials, many of which cant be skipped after 5 seconds, and force you to watch the full commercial So hearing a sponsorship on top of the commercial is really annoying Also, it makes youtuber look greedy, for getting both the add revenue and a sponsorship on top of that
That's why people calling these 'independent media' is such a misnomer. They are all, just like mainstream media, motivated by money, which means they are all biased. And the ads and sposnorship commercials with these 'new' media has become even more scrupulous than with the old media.
The bigger problem in this case is that the sponsored content looks indistinguishable from MKBHDs regular content which is misleading. It also undermines the trust people have in his regular reviews. If you make such genuine sounding sponsored content for DJI, how will his next review video of DJI products be perceived
I dont understand why someone like this, who is rich, can't just rent or reserve a race track where they can go as fast as they want, and instead chose to pull this in a residential area.
Wasn't so much a choice rather an impulse. Difference is an impulse in a Camry gets you to 45 in a 35 but in a revuelto gets you to 96 in a 35. Still inexcusable
The thing is, the more famous/wealthy you become, the more out of touch with reality you tend to become. This makes it harder to make informed decisions about how your actions will be perceived by the lay person. Fascinating to watch happen in real time.
He’s probably gonna give an apology then upload like normal, I mean what he did was very dangerous but we should be thankful no one was hit, injured or killed. He should take this criticism as a reason to grow and just avoid speeding then he’s all good imo 🤷♀️
@@nurseii9018 The issue with that is there's no chance this was his first time speeding. It's just the first time he got caught. @@splatterfrog4606 you’re right but literally most people are guilty of speeding well over the speed limit so it’s just hard for me to point the finger at someone doing the same thing as probably half the people in this comment section, but yeah I get that this is a children’s zone (which is why this is an even bigger problem) but if he does sincerely apologise and at least somewhat recognise the danger speeding brings to both himself and other people, then I *personally* have no reason to hate the guy. 8:44 I completely disagree with the sentiment here. He is not an athlete - he is supposed to be an independent tech journalist. When 100s of thousands of dollars are being thrown around for sponsorships it is not true that he can continue to be impartial.
I completely disagree. An athlete that people/kids look up to as their hero says eat this pointless cereal for example is absolutely bias due them getting paid a crap tonne of money. Are the athletes reviewing products etc, probably not. However it can come across as "I know what I'm talking about, so eat this". They have chosen to say " I love this product because........when they are being paid to say it. Is it biased per say, maybe, maybe not, but either way, it's equally untrustworthy. Secondly, being open and honest that this is a sponsored video about a product he VERY likely uses as his choice of equipment is far better than reviewing products and saying this is best, when it's very likely he gets given most if not all the products. Every reviewer has a bias or at the very least, a favourite especially if he uses the type of products he is reviewing. Smaller youtubers will and do say no. But as August said, if you use DJI and they said to you, here, have a few 100k to say why you like our products (again very likely the truth and use anyway), I'd like to see say no. For the record, I'd far rather see this type of sponsorship than channel pushing some shit game/product that has nothing to do with the channel. I know I would push some BS like Better Help or Shadow Legends if I'm show people how to change a lightbulb.
He hardly is impartial at all where I live (Germany) TH-camrs like him (derb8uer for instance) have to declare all their videos as ads and honestly it makes sense. And also his videos are never that critical and boil down to “buy it if your last device is 3 years old”. So this isn’t a big deal independent journalism is not beholden to samples from Apple or Samsung (see the guardian or other publications)
Hope he ain't in Massachusetts🗣🗣🗣🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Edit: The original comment was something about Marcus about to run over his future kid, and in Massachusetts, you have to pay the parents if you hit a child while drunk driving.
I don't think so people generally hate sponsored videos but in case of MKBHD, it was that the man had this whole thing going on as the, “Most Honest Tech Reviewer” or someone who people genuinely looked upto and I believe he didn't do sponsorships but now when he did it, it's kinda like it chips away a tiny bit from his whole persona. Earlier you could with full certainty trust the guy now you might wonder can I actually fully trust him on this? I know it sounds rather extreme, but as a man commented on that video about “there was this line that Marquees wouldn't cross but now that line is kinda blurred!”
That's why I never like people like Mr. Beast building wholesome personal like this but lying about the most insignificant things. People seem to forget how easily trust is broken and act like it doesn't matter.
His entire schtick was that he was unbiased and had the customer's best interests in mind when reviewing a product. You simply just can't trust a sponsored review of a product. Its always painted in the companies favor. It definitely does hurt credibility. Not as much as going 100 in a residential but u get the point.
It's worse than that. There's two yellow signs. You can barely see the second one, but it's a school zone sign. He's deliberately speeding in an area where kids go to school. I've seen a lot of arguments that it's not that big of a deal because it's a Saturday, but kids still have reasons to go to school on the weekend. Like sports or a parent/teacher conference. As a German, allowing 56 km/h (35 mph) on a street where children play seems insane to me already. Going three times as fast is just absolutely beyond the pale! 🥶 We don't even allow that speed on most main roads in our cities! 50 km/h (31 mph) is the general maximum speed within built up areas! But on a street like this, we'd only allow 30 km/h max, which is about 19 mph. We might even turn this particular street into a "Spielstraße", which means cars are not allowed to go faster than a "walking pace" (1st gear idle speed, essentially) and pedestrians ALWAYS have right of way.
There's a channel called City Nerd that talks about urban planning, and the 35 mph four-lane roads in most American towns are death traps. Sometimes we call them stroads (street + road) because the main traffic paths in most American towns failed to be roads and failed to be streets. You can't really go fast enough to get anywhere, but you're going too fast to look at the businesses, and everything is always 20 blocks away. This is just a problem with our cities. We just get used to never walking because it's too dangerous to be a pedestrian.
As a side note to the main video, I do agree with you. Here in the UK it's 20MPH for zones where children are likely to be, like near a school, a park, a particularly built up area, including with speed bumps. UK facts for survival of being hit at 30 vs 35MPH: at 40 mph there is a 90 percent chance they will be killed. at 35 mph there is a 50 percent chance they will be killed. at 30 mph there is a 20 percent chance they will be killed. at 20 mph there is a 2.5 percent chance they will be killed. src is roadwise

To push back on the sponsorship video just a little. The issue with Marcus Brownlee doing it is that his entire channel is about independently reviewing products. His reputation comes from his ability to be objective and impartial with the reviews. It just really goes against his brand to do a sponsored video where everyone knows his opinion in that video is by definition hopelessly biased towards the product. It will leave you wondering just how impartial his reviews really are if he's willing to compromise the independent nature of his opinion by taking a sponsorship. ps. Veritasium did something very similar when reviewing Weimo, and for similar reasons it did not go down well.

I think the reason why everyone shits on youtubers for taking sponsorship but not celebrities is cuz they are held to a more “relatable” standard. TH-camrs are “real people” whereas celebrities live on another tier of life. Though the line between a TH-camr and a celebrity barely still even exists.
It's the whole parasocial relationship thing. Just like people want to believe their friends are hanging out with them just because they enjoy it, they want to believe youtubers are only making these videos and interacting with their audience because they want to. They don't want to believe youtubers want to make money. Which is pretty ridiculous. Although I do think this has gotten better for the most part. Back when youtubers first started taking sponsorships and when they first started making patreons, they got so much more hate than they do now. Nowadays, people seem pretty understanding of the fact that youtube is a job and not a hobby anymore. And part of the motivation of any job is to get paid.
Also celebrities don’t review products. They act, sing, write fiction etc. a TH-cam tech reviewer is supposed to be transparent and show no bias. I’d prefer if the sponsorship he did was non tech related.
Have to disagree. I don't care if TH-camrs take sponsors and do an ad read. Marques made a 9 minute long advertisement and put it on his channel and only at the very beginning labeled it as sponsored. How are we supposed to trust his opinion on tech products when he can be bought like this? You're right, it probably was a huge payday for him. That's the point. It damages his integrity.
A good thing JoshStrifeHays once said. A youtuber pays with his reputation when it comes to sponsorship. ( don't remember exactly what he said, but along those lines)
Slightly misleading, but the wallpaper app was free. It's the OPTIONAL payment plan for "premium" (not saying they were any good either) wallpapers, both the monthly USD$12 and yearly USD$50 Just figured I'd mention that
I honestly feel like an apology isn't enough in this case. People like Marques, who just casually, without putting much thought into it, accept the actual annihilation of a child or any other person, need to relinquish their license. These sorts of people have no business going on public roads or participating in traffic. The fact that he won't see ANY consequences from this legally makes me so angry. If he has any integrity left, he will turn in his license and hand Auto Focus to someone who drives responsibly until he has taken some time to seriously re-evaluate his choices and actions.
I mean i think most people are annoyed with the sponsor because hes known to be transparent and give his real thoughts about a product, which is why its fair for many of his fans to call out him making a sponsored video that he starts with "hey i think im allowed to say this". That tells his fans that this isnt a honest review and he will be censoring negative opinions, not to mention that he has said multiple times that he wont just make full length sponsored videos. Is this something people should be upset about when were talking about someone endagering other people? Probably not but i still think its perfectly valid to call him out when he is doing things that directly go against the morals he built the channel on, this is also known as being a sell out.
How is this "shamefull" when "tech TH-camr" does this but when a "car TH-camr" like DDE does it, they are praised? Blurring out the speedometer doesn't make it any "safer".
They're both shameful in my opinion. I just don't watch car TH-camrs so I don't even know who that is but if they also do the same thing its just as gross and shameful. On the topic of sponsored content - as long as it's clearly a sponsorship and disclosed, no dramas. It was in this case, so there's no issue with that part of the video. I remember a few years ago one of The Theorist channels did a video - and I can't recall if they explicitly said that the video was sponsored by some phone brand, but it was obvious that the video was largely an ad for the phone (as it was filmed entirely on it, and multiple comments on how good it was). I believe they said it was sponsored - which makes it fine - but if it weren't disclosed, then that's where the issue comes in.
it's fine, he will just make another scripted carefully worded apology to get the internet to completely get over him speeding and hire a new editor. but he's slipping up a lot lately. This definitely doesn't look good
MKBHD is greedy as fuck now. That whole wallpaper subscription thing was weird, and he seems to have let his money go to his head. MKNHD, you have enough money.
What annoys me most about videos that are entirely sponsored is that I watch videos to learn or enjoy something-not to sit through what feels like a long commercial. When the whole video turns out to be just an ad, it’s frustrating, and it feels like this is something you see mostly on TH-cam. Other shows are just shows-they’re not one long commercial.
Is it just me, or did MKBHD build his career off being the sort of reviewer who DIDN'T make sponsored reviews? We've come full circle back to dogshit? My dude spent 15 yrs on TH-cam to ultimately become an infomercial director?
7:10 the problem isn't TH-camrs taking accepting sponsors, if he wants to advertise some non tech product, then so be it. The problem is that somebody like MKBHD is supposed to be a tech reviewer. The purpose of a review is to provide objective information about a product for you to make an informed purchasing decision. When he accepts a sponsorship for a tech product, I have a hard time taking his other reviews seriously. Even if he says they're not biased, there is always going to be a bias towards the companies to keep receiving free press kits or collaborate on future sponsorships. He's been extremely lenient on certain companies, whom he has a more than excellent partnership with. It undermines his credibility and integrity as it is a conflict of interest. That's the problem most people have with reviewers accepting sponsors for products they might have otherwise reviewed.

@@keisetsu-mj3pf Well, with seeing how good the person seems on video, most people would,d respect the,
That’s pretty dramatic
My issue with TH-cam sponsorships is the following:
- Recently TH-cam has gotten greedier. Back in the day, I would get one commercial break at most, which was skip able after 5 seconds
Now this is no longer the case. I would get 2-3 commercial breaks for a 15 min long video, with 2 or sometimes 3 commercials, many of which cant be skipped after 5 seconds, and force you to watch the full commercial
So hearing a sponsorship on top of the commercial is really annoying
Also, it makes youtuber look greedy, for getting both the add revenue and a sponsorship on top of that
That's why people calling these 'independent media' is such a misnomer. They are all, just like mainstream media, motivated by money, which means they are all biased. And the ads and sposnorship commercials with these 'new' media has become even more scrupulous than with the old media.

He knew he was speeding, thats why he blurred it
No "I'm sorry for my mistake" will fix that, he did it on purpose
I dont understand why someone like this, who is rich, can't just rent or reserve a race track where they can go as fast as they want, and instead chose to pull this in a residential area.

As a German, allowing 56 km/h (35 mph) on a street where children play seems insane to me already. Going three times as fast is just absolutely beyond the pale! 🥶
We don't even allow that speed on most main roads in our cities!
UK facts for survival of being hit at 30 vs 35MPH:
at 40 mph there is a 90 percent chance they will be killed.
at 35 mph there is a 50 percent chance they will be killed.
at 30 mph there is a 20 percent chance they will be killed.
at 20 mph there is a 2.5 percent chance they will be killed.

Again no loyalty or brown nosing any TH-camr im not 12, as far as im concerned no youtuber is worthty of my admiration or respect, of course I like certain youtubers but people act as if they aren't just normal people who can be just as rude, arrogant, greedy, maniplative as anyone else but because they seem wholesome it's a shock.
That's pretty cynical.
@MistahMarvelous1 I'm a cynical person what can I say, life does that to ya 😆.
Nothing beats the 1,000 bottles of baby oil in 2024
There wasn’t baby oil in those bottles it was drugs
Ain’t nothing like a Chaos Party! (Literally what this year is now)
2024 is the ultimate saga for TH-camrs. What a time to be alive.
I will never understand why people think speeding is cool. Where are you in such a rush to get to? You aren't a first responder. You are the person that causes the first responders to have to come get you or someone else.
Speeding is cool. If you do it on a professional track. Which he easily could have paid to do yet chose not to. Speeding on public roads makes you a massive degenerate loser.
0:18 The Year Of Exposing is how I put it, like I don’t know what to even call human logic anymore, as logically humans shouldn’t be like this, like bruh what is going on. Remember when humanity was somewhat logical, what happened to that?
When a massive youtuber does something bad again, you know years to come will be even worse
I feel like finding a highway wouldn't have been that hard
I really dislike the way he just ignores all valid criticism of himself and hides evidence. It's really slimy.
This guy hasnt had a shred of credibility for years
Good video. Appreciate your nuance view about the sponsorship thing.
The fact that this dude managed to at least fix his drama with the bs that was Panels only to do this
it's fine, he will just make another scripted carefully worded apology to get the internet to completely get over him speeding and hire a new editor. but he's slipping up a lot lately. This definitely doesn't look good
MKBHD is greedy as fuck now. That whole wallpaper subscription thing was weird, and he seems to have let his money go to his head. MKNHD, you have enough money.
Using my girlfriend picture as a wallpaper is way better than using his shit wallpaper
Watching this with tears in my eyes...
I just sprained my ankle 💀💀
You Either Die a Hero, or You Live Long Enough To See Yourself Become the Villain
A youtuber saying the audience is wrong for hating TH-camrs for sketchy behavior.... 😂
Bro was like the most chill youtuber untill now
Is it just me, or did MKBHD build his career off being the sort of reviewer who DIDN'T make sponsored reviews? We've come full circle back to dogshit? My dude spent 15 yrs on TH-cam to ultimately become an infomercial director?
Bro might be the next Jack Doherty.. 😮
The worst part is that just one note from an editor theoretically could have kept us from ever knowing it.
I didn't realize people care this much about tech reviews. Jesus.
@@brettadiah10 i think it god for reviews in general.
“The worlds so soft” “you guys always make a big deal out of nothing” “all you guys do is cancel people” yet you guys all do this the second you get a chance
Hot take; don't record yourself competing a crime ever. Your not top gear.
i love how they only added the blur from 60 mph... like.. 57, 58, 59, who knows what comes next?
i feel like this is a thing common among rich people. he has grown so big, has a lot of money and power and he wants to exercise it. thinks that the rules don't apply to him - if he'd get fined he'd just pay it, no big deal
I really respected him in the past, but that’s unacceptable, people drive like that in my neighborhood and almost kill innocent people all the time. Dang it marques, do better
Ngl I thought this was a Dhar Mann video 💀
The issue with sponsorships and the like on YT is the fact that I already paid YT for a premium membership, exactly NOT to have adds.
You're actually stupid
Going 96mph in a 35mph school zone isn't just a little oopsie let me edit that out of the video- that is criminal negligence
Nice to see such a large youtuber be a fellow arkansan
Fame and wealth has finally corrupted his brain.
I am shocked on how many idiots in the comments defend this guy or say this is not a big deal!
This man drove nearly 100 mph in a 35 with child caution signs! Thats not just "a little speeding", that's dangerously putting others, especially children, at risk of death!
This horrible man deserves jail for years!
Sadly in the US he won't get an appropriate punishment because he is rich and famous...
It is probably the numbness from other TH-camrs doing more egregious things.
It’s all fun and games until you literally unalive someone. Then you ask yourself was it worth it?
Nah, this kind of person will only ask:
_"HOW could this happen?"_
_"WHY did this happen to ME?"_
And then they will moan:
_"I don't deserve this! This could've happened to ANYONE! But now they all call me the villain, cause I happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time! Woe is me!"_
Someone who drives like this is never going to take responsibility, they'll never recognize they're in the wrong! If he ran over a child while speeding like that, in his head it would be the child's fault for running onto the road, or the parent's fault for not looking out for the child! 🤢
@@LRM12o8 Nah i think marques would recongnize that hes at fault for driving way to fast and hitting someone because of it.
NO, NOT MARQUES!
He’s always been a apple shill but even this is low for him
Markass
@@EdwunKoopwhat are you talking about he uses Android and likes the operating system better. His reviews are as non bias as they come. This is bad but the mere act of enjoying an Apple product doesn’t make you a shill.
@@THEONETRUEOVERLORDidk why people are trying so hard to get this guy “cancelled”. Yes this was stupid but people are really trying to get him down to mr beast level which is ridiculous
@@EdwunKoop he uses both apple and android devices so i wouldnt call him that
It's human nature. When people have a lot of money, after a while they start to feel entitled and that they can get away with anything due to fame/money. Nothing surprises me.
Dude has a porche, its safe to assume he also breaks traffic rules outside of videos too
Wouldn't surprise me
