Wow, that's scary if you were almost fooled! Thanks for sharing, Daniel. 👍
That was a very good catch. To date the only counterfeit coin I ever got hung with was a one dollar gold piece. I purchased it before grading services were around. These fakes are a real scourge for our hobby.
There's alot of money in fakes. I bought a few of the most amazing looking Morgan fakes. Semi rare dates AU. They'd go for $60. Luckily I only paid spot for them a number of years back.
The patina reminded me
of gold colored tokens you receive at a car wash or amusement center.
I have a completely disorganized collection that I did not collect. I dont know anything about any of this. I'm trying to get the collection organized, and I'm finding it daunting. SO much to learn. SO, SO much. I'm getting that redbook you've mentioned and hopefully that will help. Your videos are helping, too, but I do get discouraged about things like this. 🤦♀️
You can also buy yourself a subscription to get values of coins not only from E-bay most current past sales to get a current value of each coin you can also buy yourself a subscription to the ( Gray sheet ) to get upto date values on your coins. Both are what coin shops use to value coins that people bring in to sell to them. This way you don't look in the red book that says that particular coin is worth $1,000,000 and actually think it's worth what the red book values coins. The red book is a good book to learn some of what's out there but definitely not all. Fact check. A lot of people get disappointed thinking the red books prices are realistic when they are not. Best of luck reading this. And happy collecting.
The Red Book, or even better, the Mega Red Book, is a very good educational and details verification source. Couldn't make it without mine.
Don't get upset, it takes many years for the one to learn the amount that David has learned, I'm certainly not an expert, but I've been collecting for over 10 years. Research is the best thing you can do, books like the Red Book are most certainly your friend, as is learning from honest men like Daniel. It's a fun hobby, especially if you're into history.
@@torpedo1306 thank you! I do enjoy history, but this is just not my "thing." I completely respect and appreciate everyone who enjoys it, so please don't get my wrong. We all have our own "thing."
I just want to get it organized and sold without getting ripped off but also without spending a fortune to have it appraised. It wasn't my collection, and I'm grateful I have it, but I find myself frustrated somewhat easily. Part of it has to do to my dyslexia and seeing "1983" as "1938" for example. 🤦♀️ slow and steady wins the race, I suppose.
Thank you, again, for your encouraging words!
Crushed the like button! Excellent video and thank you so much for sharing!
wow, thanks for the video. crazy how good they look.
Those California gold $1 they look more stamped than they do minted from the way the rim looks
They look a bit 'brassy'.
Exactly
@@CoinHELPu Thank you, sir
If someone could clear up a point for me? Were the counterfeits made to scam modern collectors or were they circulating as counterfeits when the coins were in circulation?
I cast my vote for the former. Condition too nice to be in circulation.
@@acousticshadow4032 Ah, thank you... (as he goes off to the coffee machine!)
Yes that high quality they had a collectors premium for last 100yrs
Yeah, definitely the first. Looking to get over on the novices or even some pros, I'm sure, as well.
Chinese counterfeits if you were to ask me.
Coming for you makes it quite alarming and even more scarier, 🇺🇲🦅⚖️
Someone as you who knows and been around coins you whole life, just think someone like me or others that don't have experience would get took in to the bank for sure. On fakes this good..
Thanks for sharing Daniel. Very important video. I am not much for buying gold not certified. I seen a comment below about the counterfeits looking brassy. That's a good point. Probably would have snagged me though. That California gold looks N I C E !
Now I'm stressing even more about a gold dollar I've got out at PCGS. I need to move a few hours south, so I've got a pro I can visit. Knowledge is priceless! Thank you.
Crazy, Daniel- I had just sent you that picture a couple of months ago of that 1889.
Great video, Daniel. Thanks for what you do.
I have an 1854 type 1 gold dollar and after comparing it to the one in the video, I wouldn't have bought it either. It doesn't look right. Its details and patina are off. As someone else already posted, it looks brassy. US coins are impeccably minted (errors excepted). And this coin appears to have been poorly struck.
I have the exact same year, the '54. I received from my mom. Shes 82. It was given to her as a child from her Grandfather back in the 40's. Apparently he had them for some time, so it's been in the family for easily 100+ years. I brought it in to have it looked at and just like these, its gold but fake. My Great Grandfather always thought they were real. As long as people are out there, there will be counterfeit's. Thanks for the great info!
I've had counterfeit British gold sovereign and half sovereign that look a little too perfect and a little bit reddish. The reeding is the dead give away. Too sharp. Good gold and tend to be slightly overweight. So, not hurt when buying for melt prices.
There's a story that there were quantities clandestinely ordered by the UK from the middle eastern counterfeit producers because they needed them for inclusion in airman survival kits where the only universally accepted money was gold coins. I don't know if there's anything to the story, but it doesn't sound completely implausible.
Interesting items. Thanks for sharing, it would be great ( and also more informative) to compare side by side with the actual coins they were trying to copy , or at least with a high quality photograph of the obverse and reverse of the actual versions in order to see the detail differences.
Wow! Do you have a good eye...hindsight knowing they are fake...yeah, the finish of the strike looks off. Without that info no way! 🤠
Both counterfeit gold coins are great examples that just because they're made of real silver and gold that doesn't mean they're real. What's a few dollars worth of gold or silver when a good counterfeiter can make thousands out of a few dollars worth of gold back then and truth be told even now? Point made is just because it's made of real silver or gold doesn't mean that coin is actually real. I've seen this time and again at my friend's coin shop. People come in , they say hey! This coin is real silver or gold there for it must be real. Sadly this is more common than most would believe. Good educational video Daniel. Congratulations on the California gold coin that straight graded. Yes a coin must be PL on both the obverse and reverse to get that PL attribution. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much for sharing your experience,
That is so interesting to see,” Fake Die”…
Daniel your a channel of welcome surprises…!!!
I only buy from reputable dealers.
Must be tough when honest. For the most part, people come in with counterfeits. It's not like they're trying to get you, but didn't realize they had been gotten. Must be hard breaking the news.
It is
I would say they are good enough to fool most people, very good counterfeits. Are they in the counterfeit Gold book?
I didn’t look
Thanks so much for the information
This why I do not collect, although I did get burned on 10 fake silver Prospector rounds.
But was it a gold coin It still had to go content in it correct It wasn't being sold as a graded coin
Good morning Daniel from Maryland. I like your video.
It's kind of surprising that the grading companies wouldn't give a PL designation for just the obverse, like the California example, same if the reverse was the only side that looked proof like. It seems that having that designation, even with one side having it would still make the coin more desirable to collect than a coin that doesn't have that appearance. As for the counterfeits, at least they have the gold value in them, they would be good teaching examples considering that they still have some value, it shows the lengths that these fraudsters will go through in order to trick the unsuspecting buyer.
It's really goofy. They do the same thing with cameo designations on 50s and 60s proof sets. You have to have the same cameo on both sides. I as the consumer don't give a hoot about that. I only care about cameo obverse. It would not be hard to put a dual designation for each side.
Those are nice for counterfeit
That calaifornia gold piece is beautiful
Daniel, thanks for sharing. Serves as a reminder for everyone to be careful and do our due diligence. Wonderful content as usual!
The headdress doesn't look right
Didn’t show reverse of 1st coin 🤣
Do you have a real coin to compare against?
False dies, but we're they at least real gold?
I answer that in the video.
those fakes just look to perfect, almost no marks too, for soft gold.
Wow they are real looking coins Daniel
👍
So are the coins real gold and just struck somewhere else, or are they not solid gold either?
These are 90% gold
Fool PCGS and win i guess is the new game to play.
People were making FAKE coins back in the time of the ROMANS - I'm sure the Emperor would find you a job working with the Lions at the Colosseum in Rome - LOL
1st
The fakes look real to me. If it tested as real gold I would have been completely sold on it.
I consider my self a us coin expert (what i don't know i can find in books or online) i will always avoid gold. I won't certify or buy its just to tricky and hard to tell without sending it in like that. Fakes alot of time test out as real gold.
