Iris Chandelier Part II

  • Blacksmith artist Max Randolph designs and builds a steel and glass chandelier. Part II focuses on the process of pulling the glass bottles into shape with Glassblower Seth Breyer. With finishing touches on the metal work, the chandelier comes to life in the shop and then installed in the client's home. The glass creates a portal effect, as if looking up into another world. Resembling thread-like striations of an iris, captured within a cyclone of dancing movement.

    I have a tip for the Valhalla Door hardware. The lag bolts that hold the escutcheon to the door can be drilled and tapped in the center of the heads and then place the domed brass covers on the workbench , put the correct sized bolt that matches the lag bolt tap( duh, of course) and pour epoxy into the dome to just above the head. Give it a few days then roll a ring gasket down to the level of the epoxy , screw them in until the gasket makes contact and use your palm to turn it just enough to hold but not so tight it pops the epoxy out...maybe try one or two like that? Let me know? Or don't ? Its just an idea...

      Thank you, Derrick! The Valhalla door is the entrance to a local company called Daniels Wood Land, they build extravagant tree houses and playgrounds. I work with them occasionally when they want big metal work. When I'm done, you will be see the full build here on YT!

    Really beautiful art, I dont know if video didn't show it but it did seem some stretched glass did not perpetuate light as well as others

      Thank you! It's all the same glass, so what you are noticing is forced perspective, more angles of the light rather than faults in the glass.

    As a hanger of large doors, how did you hold those doors in proper margins while you bolted on the bars and hinge system ? Did you change out the hex bolt heads for hammered heads ? How did you cut the gear teeth ?
    You really communicated the creative processes of the mind / hands involved in those endeavors.

    Absolutely beautiful and dazzling! Every piece of your work is so unique and dynamic!
    When you start a new project, what are some of the things you like to pull inspiration from for your designs?

      Oh what a marvelous question!! Firstly I start with my client's sensibilities, then try to push the envelope haha. After that, I look through the client's lense and extract inspiration as I design!

    Artisan of the highest level! How long do we have to wait for footage of the hobbit door?

    • @Max_Randolph_Studios
      @Max_Randolph_Studios  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, thank you! I don't have footage of the building process of the hobbit door, I didn't have my camera or my amazing team back then. We are planning on putting together a video about the door, with closer shots of the finished door.

    Had a micro heart attack when the video sped up after Seth place the first bottle. Thought he was reacting to dropping a bottle.

    Beautiful I was thinking how would it look if you were to put a led light hidden in the bottle facing the curved part

      Thank you! Funny you say that, there are LED lights on the inside of the outer ring, facing down the bottles.

    Have you ever forged a Claymoor?

    • @Max_Randolph_Studios
      @Max_Randolph_Studios  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, but I don’t make swords too often. My focus is on large pieces like sculptures and artistic mechanisms, but I did just make a claymore for my very good friend for an anniversary gift.

    If you can make weapons you should try to go on forged in fire

      It's a great show, I actually worked with the producers in the concept phase, but I really enjoy making larger pieces that have more movement and flow.

    You inspire me and motivate me to work hard man you are amazing, I love your work. Can I ask what got you into forging you’re so good at it.

      Thank you!! That means so much to me, inspirations is what gives my life meaning, whether receiving or giving it. I've been into metal since I was very young, started out welding and found that I could melt metal with forging and never looked back.

    Do you have any issues with metal warping when you do the final solid weld? If so do you incorporate it into your design or heat temper?

    • @Max_Randolph_Studios
      @Max_Randolph_Studios  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, of course! Great questions!! I always start with a precise blueprint of what the design should be, and when a weld wasps that out of the concept I have to be creative to bring it back to the original intentions - sometimes that does include heat temper, just depends on the situation.

    How do you keep your steel from rusting? Do you anodize or apply a coating? As someone who does a lot of sheet metal and welding, just curious. I typically patina or anodize

    • @Max_Randolph_Studios
      @Max_Randolph_Studios  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question! I have several finishes! I mostly use pure lacquer, sometimes adding pigments to it. And other times I'll oil the steel for a more antique finish! I rarely paint and cover up all of the detail work.
