I first discovered it because I hated the new west side story SO MUCH that I googled who wrote it and watched the Al Pacino version of this, expecting to hate it. But it’s the best writing I’ve ever seen and incredible that it’s so long and so we’ll crafted throughout it all

Been loving Andrew Garfield since Boy A and I was one of the skeptics when he was announced to be playing TASM, but he pulled off an amazingly (sorry for the pun) dark version of the superhero. Then on to 99 Homes, Dr. Parnassus, Breathe, Under the Silver Lake, Mainstream, etc. not mentioning his more recent and already more popular ones. This scene is the National Theatre staging of AIA in London. Got a hold of it and am rewatching it from time to time since 2018. If he couldn't get a Best Actor nom for TTB they should at least consider him for Supporting Actor in The Eyes of Tammy Faye.

This play saved my sanity during a very, very dark, painful time in my life. Millennium Approaches tears your guts out, mercilessly, and no one with a quarter of a heart leaves the theater without feeling sick, and worthless, and angry, and hurt, and ashamed, and disgusted. A person cannot go any lower. And then comes Part II, Perestroika. And the Angel picks you up off of the garbage heap, and raises you up to see your own worth, and more importantly, the worth of everybody who surrounds you in your life. God Bless You, Tony Kushner, for what you did for me. "You are fabulous creatures, each and every one. And I bless you: More Life. The Great Work Begins.” And it did.

Denise Gough brought a really great approach to Harper. That character can be and has been played, very aloof and in a constant state of spiraling. Yet Denise played her here with a true sense of reality. She made it so the audience can put themselves in her shoes the way that they can for Prior in this scene. This more grounded approach makes it so that when Harper starts her "I wanna get away from here" dialogue at 3:00 you can really see and feel the polarity of the text.
Andrew is fantastic is also fantastic in this role and commands the stage, but I definitely think Denise holds her own here too.

Have you ever heard a couple arguing in whispers? Also, how messed up is it to judge a play by one scene and one scene alone? Imagine jumping to a random part of a movie, watching 5 minutes of it, then deciding your opinion about the whole movie. It's ludicrous.

2 couples. Prior (Garfield) has just been diagnosed with AIDS and is quickly deteriorating and his partner Lewis cannot handle it and leaves him. On the other hand, you have Harper (the woman) and his husband Joe who are going through a crisis with Harper being addicted to medications and Joe having an awakening and realizing he is gay and has feelings for his coworker Lewis (Prior's partner). This is the climax of the first act when both couples break down.

Wow I just wanted to see Andrew in this play bc he’s so amazing, but I don’t really know the play other than someone has AIDS. Can someone tell me what’s going on in the scene?
Now that I’ve watched it 3 times, it’s incredibly powerful. I love that it’s 2 separate scenes going on at once :) Andrew’s performance is outstanding, he practically had the Tony in his pocket after every performance🥲

Sure! We have two couples, Prior and Louis, and Harper and Joe. This scene is an explosion of tension that's been building through the whole play up until now. Prior has HIV and Louis, from the minute he learns about Prior's diagnosis, questions whether he can handle serious illness and being a caregiver to his partner. And the play does not sugar coat the terrifying reality of what Prior is going through, so we see Louis really struggle with this role and finally we get to this scene, where Louis announces he is moving out, while trying to gloss over that it's because he can't handle being in a relationship with a dying person. We see Louis try to justify it, try to rationalize it, alternately try to be unapologetic, yet beg for absolution. He wants out, but he doesn't want to admit it to Prior, so he tries to assuage his guilt with "I'll stay over some nights," but Prior sees through it immediately. Prior knows what Louis is really doing, and he refuses to allow Louis to cloak himself in any of the comforting narratives he's telling himself, most notably, that he cannot be blamed for leaving, that this isn't a betrayal, or that Prior could one day forgive him for this. Prior calls bullshit, and rules that Louis's heart is deficient, that he cannot love, because to love would mean to stay through the horror and the hardship, and not try to escape and leave your lover to die alone. And, Prior is right to call bullshit, because Louis is absolutely looking for a way out, as long as he can be cleared of any guilt. But Louis's guilt will haunt him through the rest of the show.
Harper and Joe are a married Mormon couple living in New York. Harper is an agoraphobic misfit who relies heavily on Valium to manage her mental illness and the widening distance in her marriage to Joe, who is deeply closeted and avoids coming home. Harper rarely leaves their apartment, but will also avoid certain rooms in it because she thinks a destructive man is in there, waiting for her. She also begins to suspect that Joe is gay. In this scene, Joe finally says it out loud, and admits his marriage was a sham, a desperate bid to cover up his homosexuality, but also a sort of doomed bargain with God to save her from her mental illness, in order to save his own soul, because he knows he cannot change himself. Finally, Harper knows the truth and she cannot in the moment cope, but Joe suggests that after all these years of treating Harper like a problem to solve, he was likely the most destructive part of her life, and she realizes he's probably right.
