  • * Apparently one of the maps I used (0:37-0:47) is a map of something called "Greater Albania", and some of you are upset about it. I didn`t know what Greater Albania was (I had never heard of it), and it`s not written on the map. I mistakenly thought it was a simple hand-drawn map of the Balkans. I`m sorry about that mistake. There was no political intention behind using that map.*
    This video is about the Turkish language, which is spoken in Turkey - as well as the closely related Oghuz Turkic languages which are sometimes considered dialects of Turkish.

    I used to work in Turkey in the 1990's. I learned Turkish rather quickly since my own language, Finnish, also is agglutinative one. A language, however, tends to disappear if t i not used regularly. Fortunately I have many friends in Finland, who are native Turkish speakers. This video is very good. It is always fun to learn new languages! Thanks Paul!

      AFAIK Finish was in that old "Altaic" language family. As far as I remember it is not accepted because the languages are not that similar. But maybe it was divided in a very long time ago. Who knows I am not an expert :) nwm take care

    • @kevinkgillette
      @kevinkgillette 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@radonsider9692 I've heard that linkage as well - that Finnish (and the whole Finno-Ugric, or Uralic language family) is lumped into Altaic. I think the legendary Joseph Greenberg was one of the advocates of that linkage.
      My grandmother was a native Finnlander (so I am 1/4 Finnish); I tried out some Turkish phrases and words on her, but she didn't understand or see any common roots in any of them. As Paul mentions in the video, the Altaic super-family has been largely discredited by modern linguists, although given the common source location of both families (essentially central Asia), some common ancestor seems plausible, even likely. We may just not have the tools to go that far back diachronically to link them together.
      Also note that Turkish has an unusual word order in sentences that is completely different from Finnish or Hungarian (for example). In English one might say, "I gave the book to the little girl," whereas in Turkish (as I understand it), the sentence would read, "I to the little girl the book gave." In this respect at least, it is very similar to Japanese, though no other similarities exist as far as I know.

    • @radonsider9692
      @radonsider9692 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@kevinkgillette you can actually change the places, just by having the verb, it will still be a sentence. So you can say the sentence from reverse (only the verb staying in the same pos.) And it doesn't even sounds that different. "Kitabı küçük kıza verdim.", "küçük kıza kitabı verdim.", "Ben, kitabı küçük kıza verdim." Etc. It only gets different when the verb is not a good place in that sentence, not just at the back, sometimes placing the verb in front of the sentence won't affect much but if you really throw the verb in kinda akward place, you can spot them in everyday if someone uses it. Sorry for a kind of "Turkish language" lesson sorry :/

    Turkish and Hungarian speakers should learn each other languages as they are so similar in grammar (like agglutinating suffixes, vowel harmony, past tense, personal pronouns etc.). Like... I / én / ben , you / te / se , he/she/it / ő / o etc. Maybe Hungarian belongs to the Finno-Ugoric language group, but it could be considered as a Turkish language family member too.

    I am from India and it's really interesting to know of Turkish language. In the usage of 'pieces' or 'suffixes' to a main word to derive plurals and possessive cluase and it's phonetic nature, Turkish language shares similarities with Indian languages, which are absolutely phonetic i.e. you read as you write, and write as you read, so that there would be no spelling mistakes, unlike in English.....really appreciate your video....

    I am Turkmen, i can speak Turkish. Learning Turkish language is very easy for us. And if u can speak more than one of thish languages (Turkish, Turkmen, Azeri, Uzbek, Kazak, Kirgiz, ~Uyghur), u can understand the others even u cant speak. For example i cant speak Azeri language but i understand more than 80% of Azeri language.
    I have many relative which can speak Turkish and they learn it just by watching 1 or 2 serialized film.

    It's my time to shine! 😂 Hi, Azerbaijani here. I also studied in a Turkish school for one year. There are quite a few words, usually nouns, that differ from Azerbaijani significantly and may cause confusion in understanding the whole context. Turkey in general is the closest to us ethnically, diplomatically, and, of course, linguistically. However, I wouldn't say that modern Azerbaijani and modern Turkish are the same for obvious reasons - they might've started as such, but they branched out, Turkish got rid of the most loanwords, while Azerbaijani kept them, and they evolved separately over time. You, as a speaker of a Turkic language, would catch up way faster than other foreigners, no doubt, but you'd need to devote your time to learn the special terminology.
    Much luck and God bless all who are on their journey to learn any of the Turkic languages. :3

When i was done he went: sorry son, are you from Azerbaijan and was talking Azerbaijani? I said that he was absolutely right, he replied: i understood every single word you said, and it reminded me of my childhood when i used to go to meet my grannies, i remember my father and grandpa used to speak just the same. This was short story just another fact from life proving that Türkish and Azeri-Turkish language are very relative

      Transeurasian languages (Turkc, Mongolic, Tungusic, Japonic and Korean) cluster with each other in terms of learning curve because the DOMINANT ancestral base of those languages is proto-Transeurasian, spoken by farmers of Manchuria about 7 - 8 thousand years ago. Those farmers dispersed all around north and west(base of Turkic languages) and south(base of Korean and Yayoi base of Japanese). Only a minority stayed their place(which gave way to Tungusic{probably later Mongolic} languages) around 7000 years ago. Thats why Turkic, Japonic and Koreanic languages makes eerily perfect sense when thought in each others's thinking style...

Can Azərbaycanı çox sevirik, uğurlar🇦🇿🇦🇿 ☺😍

    I'm from Serbia and we have a couple of thousand of Turkish words (due to region being Ottoman for 400 years).
    Most of the words are archaic, but some are still very much in use, especially words for objects.
    It came in very handy when I traveled from Istanbul to Kars with my friends a couple of years ago, especially since barely anyone speaks English once you pass Ankara.
    Loved the video btw!

      Seems fun. I once went to camping with my friends at a forest close to border of Georgia, but then we saw a bear moving very close to our camp at night and didn't go away for a long time , even after it's gone we stayed awake all night and got back to Artvin karşıköy by morning . My first and last camp in artvin lol.
      Consider that if you ever want to set up a camp in forests in that area :D
