The World's LONGEST Flight - QANTAS London to Sydney

- An in-depth trip report on-board Qantas Project Sunrise London to Sydney non-stop research flight QF7879. Check out all the unusual flight details, research, well brings and the secret of double sunrise on the World’s Longest non-stop flight.
The flight is not a typical passenger flight; it is a delivery flight and a research flight. The brand new Boeing 787-9, VH-ZNJ painted in Qantas special Centenary livery operated this history making flight in just 19 hours and 19 minutes from London to Sydney non-stop covering over 17,000km! (10,500 miles)
Qantas has named its endeavor “Project Sunrise” after the airline’s historic ‘Double Sunrise’ endurance flights during the Second World War, which remained airborne long enough to see two sunrises. This flight is a prove of overcoming the final frontier of aviation, linking non-stop flights from East Coast of Australia to London and New York.

London to Sydney. Imagine the engines runing that aircraft. Engineering at its best
most planes usually don't need maintenance on the engines after every flight...
@@qduff checked, yes. but in need of major maintenance is a no unless we're talking about occasional wrenching to address something discovered during an inspection or whatever.
Engines are Made by Rolls Royce !
Salute to Folks At Rolls Royce !

True, and they could even fly further with aerial refuelling like the US military does their Lockheed jets!
Yes indeed. Let us all saute the inventors of this unbelievable tech...
Longest flight in the world is one with a screaming kid that will not be quiet.
Clare Ravenwood Fuck that.
Or the seat kicking.
I flew from Perth to Sydney and I had someone who would no stop kicking my seat.
@@jessmartin2340
I would definitely make it clear not on my watch.
LOL
Jess Martin dude someone was doing that to my mum and screaming so she literally stood up (after telling the kid and the mum to stop like 5 times) and yelled at the mum to control her children
Literally after the flight some random passenger went up to us and said those kids are brats and we did the right thing
Whenever I travel, I do my best to always be super respectful and courteous. It's nice to see how respectful and kind Sam is to everyone. Love your adventures my friend.
the cure for this length of time is a sleeping pill and a beer------i have gone to riyadh saudi arabia to NYC many times------12 hours-------start off with some beer and half of a sleeping pill----or ---or muscle relaxer---check with your doctor-------first------------it works
yes
Fake
Why wouldn't you be? I always fly WJ 787's in one of two seats (I'll change plans to suit my travel preference) and the level of service is incredible. Respect garners respect and I have nothing but respect for the airport staff and inflight staff I deal with. With the amount of BS they deal with, they seem somewhat relieved when you smile and treat them with respect.
@@oz_medias - Everyone should be, but sadly many are rude, arrogant, condescending, or feel entitled. Drunkenness exacerbates those bad traits even more, which is a problem with some travelers as well.
3 times I flew a former "longest flight in the world". LA to Singapore on Singapore Airlines. 18 hours in the air. Even the coach seats were more like business class. Lots of legroom, lots of movies on screens on each seat, and this was back in 2003-2004. It was a modified Boeing 777. Loved those flights.
What did you do for a living back then?
@@amanguptalko - I was picking up boxes of computer chips for new cars.
@@need100k Dayum. How does one get a job like that? that allows one to fly all over the world in business class?
@@amanguptalko I was an independent contractor as a courier in California. Most of my work involved picking up super urgent packages (including human body parts for transplant) and delivering them to or from local airports. But I also was on call to pick up or deliver to anywhere in the world on very short notice. In a span of two years I made about 40 international trips by air. It's been a long time but it's still a necessary job so you just have to search for it.
I don't think that was B777. It was most likely an A340-500.
Back in 2003-2004.
For LA to Singapore route, A345 was the only plane that can fly that far and was the only plane that Singapore Airline chose to do that route. It was Singapore airline's longest flight and also was the world longest flight.
B777 couldn't fly that long, even for Extended Range version. There's a SIN-LAX flight for B777, but they have to stop in Tokyo first, then fly to LAX.
In today, Singapore airline is using the specifically modified A350 to do SIN-LAX flight, (A350ULR, Ultra Long Range. Airbus literally made this specific mod for Singapore Airline, there's no other company with this A350 mod)
I just want to congratulate the engines. 👏🏻

Wow, double sunrise. Emotional after the wings were clipped due to the pandemic . Added to this historical flight was hearing the 2nd Officer, Chris honoring his grand father who fought in my country, Papua New Guinea. Sadly he just passed on and was not able to hear of his grandson's historical flight.

Only thing is it's not the longest flight.
Auckland to London is,
@@blake9358 Auckland to London requires at minimum one stop as of now. Mostly LA but also Hong Kong etc... LA is the shortest option taking about 1 day 1-2 hours. This is longest flight as in non stop flight.
@@blake9358 For some reason your reply disappeared, did you delete it?
Yeah there was a test flight done, afaik Sam was on board there as well, BUT that was actually New York to Auckland. Which is roughly 2 kilometers less distance (actually around 1,74)... and it's in operation now as a nonstop flight as well.
London to Auckland is as of yet NOT a non stop flight. All of them are either 1 or more stops.
@@youtubemodsaresnowflakelef7692 That's inaccurate. There was a non stop flight between Auckland and London operated by Air NZ.
Furthermore Auckland to New York would not be the world's longest flight. Air NZ actually boasted how the Auckland to London non stop flight pipped the Sydney to London flight which is currently the world's longest non stop route
Thank you Sam for interviewing Chris. Watching from 🇵🇬 and I'm really proud of you Chris 👏
What an inspiring video, as an Australian & a Queenslander I was in tears by the end, please keep making videos like this, we all need it.

What a fascinating and educating video Sam, thank you. I remember quite a few years ago, sitting at the gate and looking out of the window of my 747 LAX-LHR flight.
On the adjacent gate sat a Quantas 747 bound for Sydney. Now I know why it was liveried Longreach.
longreach is actually the town in Australia where the Airline was founded back in the early to mid 1900s

17:44 This is the first time I see an interview with a CEO In pyjamas.
Christian Perez hahahahaha lol same
Very interesting. I took a long flight on Qantas from Los Angeles to Auckland, New Zealand several years ago. Even then Qantas was on top of the science to regulate our circadian rhythms and make the flight seem much shorter than it actually was. Some of the methods employed on this flight were used years ago on that long flight. Meals were given at calculated times as were the times the cabin lights were extinguished and we were asked to try to sleep. I am still impressed to this day by how well Qantas accomplished this to maximize the enjoyable experience of the flight.
When a CEO of a world renowned company allows himself to be interviewed in his pyjamas you know there truly is something special about the corporate structure and it´s philosophy. Awesome video Sam. Thanks for sharing this and making the rest of us a part of this epic flight too.

Seems like Qantas is not just an airplane but it is an emotion for Australians. Awesome guys. 🙏🙏

That's why they have "spirit of Australia" on their planes
Qantas isn't an airplane, its an airline
Bs they are nothing special, you forget the disaster over WA, 2008? Injuries to flight crew, little to no compensation, they only care about $$$ ffs! Only the great pilot saved it total disaster! Safety record / Qantas is overrated! Air NZ better!
@@thrusta100meh, that's pretty much all the airlines
