  • Currently, I am playing through Trails of Cold Steel 2 and I wanted to take a beat to circle back to Trails of Cold Steel 1 and talk about why this was the most average JRPG that I've ever invested 80 hours into beating. This game was released by Falcom in 2013 and is a highly celebrated JRPG classic. Why don't I love it the way the other fans do? Why are we talking about it anyway? #nihonfalcom #trailsofcoldsteel #jrpg

This couldn't have come out at a more perfect time! I recently got rid of my PS3 copy and was starting to regret it. Good to know it's fluff-filled since I try to avoid those types of games!😅

Trails games are usually in pairs. First game is an introduction, that's usually very slow paced, then the second game gets better and you start noticing the payoff of knowing the lore and characters from the first part.
I personally consider Cold Steel 1 the worst in the series. It's very uneventful until you get to the end. People usually recommend it because it's 3D and very accesible.
I actually really recommend Trails in the Sky. Again, first part is slow, but also shorter. The second game is great.
Trails shines in the world building and characterization. Combat is usually good. Pacing however is very slow, which may not be for everyone. Even when the games picks up, it slows down again pretty soon.
However, the entire series is worth playing. As said in the review cited, you'll probably would have enjoyed Cold Stell 1 more if you had played previous games.

People hyped this game up so damn much too, i never understood it and could never come close to finishing it due to a lack of a shite to give

I think a lot of the hard-core fans have been around since the Trails in the Sky arc, which I think was a better game for its time. So then when we come to Trails of Cold Steel they are able to pick up a lot of easter eggs that I missed, they had a lot of nostalgia which allowed them to forgive some shortcomings, and ultimately this game just fits into the puzzle as a slower entry in a beloved series. I'm not sure that it stands up on its own and I completely understand why you didn't play it through.

@@PrettyGuardian Hard disagree. Cold Steel was my first game in the series, and it hooked me pretty much instantly. Looking back on it now, 9 games later, this entry has relatively few callbacks/nods to the other games. However, this game is slow and its fine to not like that. But the payoff for the slow pace is that every character feels like an actual person and the world really comes alive. It's all about whether you can stomach the pace for the benefits or not.

@@HolydiveR270 I just want to say thank you so much for watching my video, and I actually agree with you very much. Their efforts to make the characters come alive were obviously worthwhile because I genuinely care about everyone in Class 7. The structure of the game could have been better though, for example by not making the menial sidequests mandatory in moving the main plot forward, making the sidequests more impactful such as by having them be part of the characters arc and better flesh out the world (it did a little bit at some points, just not very consistently which is the big issue), they could have also written in a few more major plot points to anchor the story, alternatively they could have really leaned into the "boring" aspects of the game and added more life-sim functionality like an Atelier game. Imagine to upgrade your weapons you go to one of the orbal shops and actually have to assemble the components that you gathered out in the field. One of the big issues is in the ratio of cutscenes to gameplay. At one point in the game I actually played through 30 minutes of scenes to get to 5 minutes of gameplay and then another 15 minutes of scenes, by adding a gameplay loop such as the upgrading/crafting game they could give us more gameplay to better balance the story. Is Trails of Cold Steel actually a really advanced visual novel? An anime series with a start menu? It felt like the game didn't have much of an identity other than "tedious JRPG" and it was really unfortunate because there's a lot to like here.
