I absolutely love these pit tours. You could seriously do an episode on each individual boat and I would watch every single one. I am just gobsmacked with how many cool boats have been built.
U-95 Jim and Pamela's Clapp's turbine the first turbine driven by Leif Borgenson and sank in 1974 at the gold cup the first and only time the race was not held at Stan Sayres but at Sandpoint NAS. that was the great race duel PAK & BUD. i was there.
I love the pit tours. I was looking specifically this time for antenna masts. I see most have them, some don't. I am hoping I can get away with out putting one in. I have a 2.4 ghz Sanwa Tx and RX.
Three main issues with regards to antennas.... First is hull and cowl construction. If carbon fiber is used it can potentially interfere with the signal, so it's wise to use an exposed antenna in this case. Second is the radio itself... The signal is so much better in the modern radios that having a "line of sight" situation isn't necessary. Third and most important, for me anyway, is personal courage... Are you willing to risk potential disaster by hiding the antenna, or would you rather live with an exposed antenna for sake of greater assurance? My radio is good, my boat is not carbon fiber, and I use an antenna mast!
Typical USA heat race for nitro or gas boats begins when the class entered in comes up & all the racers using a pit guy stand at tables in pit/launch area. A time clock begins a 2-1/2 minute countdown & racers can now start engines, go to drivers stand, & the pit guy launches boat in water when signaled. The boats then mill around course until countdown reaches 0 sec. trying to cross start/finish line as clock reaches 0 but not crossing line before clock hits 0 sec. The race has begun, & all boats race the course until completing 6 laps. The 1st boat to cross start/finish line at in their 6th lap is the winner earning the most points. Overall winner of event is boat with the highest points accumulated at end of event. Hitting another boat, not maintaining your lane around a turn, cutting off a buoy during a turn(few examples) reduces the points earned during race & the points earned during event. Long post but hope that explains how race works?

I have no experience with tunnel hull boats so i really couldn't say what scale yours might be. I run 1/8 scale and gas scale hydroplanes only. My gas scale boat is about 53" long
Me too! Sadly our racing season is in hold. The Eliminator is beast... Super fast but a little bit of a handful. I'll make a point of getting some video of it at the first race, whenever that might be!

Cool! I saw the U95 win it's first heat against Pay-n-Pak in Tri-Cities and I immediately knew the piston engine days were over!
