Edit: re Zanac, Ainz was seriously considering letting the kingdom survive if he could lift Zanac to the throne. Then when the nobles did what they did he basically said “there’s no helping these morons, just give them the mercy of death”.

The song of ice and fire books do something similar, they put the focus in some characters only to either kill or not talk about them ever again
There was no glorifying the actions of nazerick during the kingdomsfall. You actually only saw the pointless struggle of the people. The army of undead the the two deathknights was the weakest that came to attack a city, and we saw the absolut helplessnes facing such foe's. "Sorcerer Kingdoms Trumpcards?" We hear, and we know....uhm no..and that was only a glimpse on what was happening.
Zanack trying to surrender, in order for his people to survive and seeing there will be no chance of that happening. Unsettling because we know for Ainz forces it is a high possibility to archive that.
Someone standing up and trying to fight Ainz, what fleeting hope for the kingdom just to get abandoned as fast as it came.
Seeing Blue Rose in their dispair to get their leader out and not die there, kidnapping Laykus just to get her out of the kingdom.
Evacuation of the Eight Fingers and their Familys....damn, here it comes...atleast some people getting out.
Cocytus arriving, without resistance marching towards the castle. Freezing everything and everyone arround him to death.
Brain staying...atleast he met Cocytus, maybe there is chance for him to survive and become a subordinate, a slim hope for the viewer that followed those characters for a long time....no chance, atleast he met the right guardian to die smiling....
Aura at the mage guild....
Mare being cute, talking about something so horrifying....
Seeing Climb's world collapse around him, struggeling without any effect, dying and then realizing his precious Renner sacrificed her humanity so he can live...he will be with her for eternity as a demon too...
Just for her to dance in the next room laughing about how well everything worked out and she achieved her goal by selling her kingdom out....
It was utter tragical, Overlord knows how to make you cheer for somebody, the goofy and quirky Guardians of Nazerick and their antics? Which are actually a bunch of walking natural disasters with the majority of them being evil aligned.
The New Worlders, with their compassion, loyalty, honor , sense of duty....where you hope they dont cross path with a bad match from Nazerick because chances are they will not survive it.
I love Overlord for that
Since you like the series so much, I highly recommend reading the light novels. further explores the events, characters, and lore. Also, the dwarf kingdom arc was too rushed, they adapted a whole volume in 3 episodes 😂
I love how this series is different from the rest of the same isekai genre. I like Lord Ains plays both the hero and the villain to reach his goals. More happy when Isekai Quartet aired to see how Lord Ains would interact to other MCs. Still can't believe he was just a salaryman from the real world. I don't mind about the cut contents to meet the episode quota but what if this happen. Can't wait for the upcoming film.
Yeah, but on the other hand you then have people going, ugh the hero never dies, and plot armor and all that, nobody has plot armor in this show, and those in Nazarick as simply extremely strong, so in reality things are exactly as they should be, the weak get crushed by the strong and no power of friendship can save them.

Platinum Dragon Lord and other dragon lords may be a treat because of wild magic that can surpass levels but looks like that world Itens will be defining factor to defeat them, PDL works on assumption that Nazarick has 1 or 2 but in reality they have dozen with Ainz World Item that red orb being clear Chekhov's gun and consisdering that Ainz whole build along with his staff are probably anti-dragon equipment I think PDL is dead as he can get, there's also the implication that PDL father unintentionally summoned the players, it was likelly side effect of him trying to summon alien treasures called world itens but YGGDRASIL players equiped with those Itens happened to be summoned along with their own world itens.
The point is that it doesnt matter. I think in the holy kingdome ark he makes the point super clear. Power is Justice.
About PDL, it seemed to me that he was part of what killed the players in the past, from what he was saying. Seems like players came before Ains in the past, caused a lot of strife and were finally put down by PDL and others, I could see him getting info from those players before killing them, about how they came here etc.
It is highly unlikely it is the case. In the source material (Light Novel), it is heavily hinted and even mentioned, that what bring down the past player is Infighting (between 8 greed king, the 6 theocracy gods, and among the 8 greed king themselves)
In fact, it is specifically mention that the only Dragon Lord that survive till this day is the one that didnt fight the players, PDL included

Overlord is a tragedy at it's core. It's not an action anime. It's supposed to be depressing. V12, 13 and 14(movie and s4 e7 to e13) are peak Overlord cos it makes you realise how much of horror is the NW is going through.
Now almost everyone with power is a tyrant in NW, Nazarick isn't the only one. But the sheer terror that NW beings feel when they don't understand what the hell Nazarick even is, is what makes it great.
It's a horror story from pov of NW and a tragedy for the reader.
I have the same feeling i get with One Punch man. I keep expecting someone to step up and put Ainz in his place but it never happens. Love the story though 😅

While I did like this season, I completely forgot about some of what happened [like the dragons or the dwarves or Evileye’s party even]. I do remember awesome moments, like Cocytus changing his path [I may have shed a tear] or Ains, after receiving the head of the king, telling Albedo to kill the traitors very slowly. All in all, a 7/10.
I remember all those and I liked it but the ending bro I felt disgusted Renner is probably the most evil person
I dont get it, the series front the start tells us what this series is and hearing you knock it as a bad thing doesnt really make sense to me. He RP the head of an EVIL guild with influences like his friends (i.e. Ulbert and TouchMe) guiding his actions. I see Ainz as a force of nature and the story has made multiple points of reminding us that Ainz is losing his humanity throughout it. While we have not seen them directly the world he lives in now gets these world changing events when players get dropped in every few centuries. We just happen to see 1 instance of this.

they are not kobolds , they are quagoa , they are mole-like demi-human , which basically if they eat some ore during their first days , they will grow stronger based on the ore they eat. now you can see why ainz wants them as well. he also got runecraft which different from enchanting , and has NO cost to make , which would great to have a monopoly over and as another way for nazzrick to get stronger.
he also took many frost dragons under his control , which now acted as multi-purpose planes for nazzrick, which shalltear used some of them as fighter planes to drop soul eaters from the upper atmosphere.
and also ainz recruited frost giants as manual labor.
overall that arc was pretty important in setting up the fact that ainz wishes nazzrick to become even stronger.
and also he got nazzrick a lot of good points due to saving the dwarves.
i think that arc could not really be cut ,due to anime keeping the foreshadowing of ainz going there later.
I love how all the characters and NPCs are unique and similar to their creators. They can’t win against them. Only true dragon lords and maybe even other players could win against them. The unsettling feeling is interesting and conflicting and I enjoy that. It’s funny because I guess the parts you didn’t enjoy they cut short a little more. Also I love how crazy ad warped Renner is and how she’s best girl lol. PDL is long lived and he knew about players in the past. The dragon knight used wild magic to control the proxy and he’s at least stronger than quite a few NPCs. We still have the movie before we get another season. We just need volume 17 and 18 to be released.
Also I think it’s a good time to review utawarerumono after the first 14 episodes since it’s right before the war so curious on your mid season thoughts for it. Also have you seen tatami galaxy and the sequel? I’m still watching Tatami Galaxy but I know that the sequel series of 6 episodes is out too

In high fantasy settings, the power of individual at the top are the only rules and to show those rules, the best way is through FEAR.
You have to understand, making everyone's happy is not the best way to rules. The different here is on Earth, millions of people can revolt against bad ruling, but in these high fantasy world, millions of people are just fodders when those in power can literally stop time.
Overlord seems to be an unintentional commentary on hikikomori. The actual main character has no grasp on right or wrong, and just lives in his distorted power fantasy world using his twisted powergamer morals, totally oblivious to what’s really going on around him. It’s really sad that the creator plays this off as all fun and games.

Phillip may have gotten the worst fate, in the LN Albedo does some next level abhorrent shit to his villagers. Shes absolutely vile for that one, but i cant help but love her character.

So I might’ve had some Context into this there’s a lot that was cut out from the light novels especially with the dwarves arc also the movie coming out is gonna be set an on the holy kingdom which takes place between episodes seven and eight which sets up the catalyst for the final part of the season. Also the light novel are ending soon so the Arthur’s cutting a lot of story plots especially this last section which was even rushed in the novel
I love this franchise! I personally think that Overlord is a classic, the point is that average anime viewers are not used to seeing evil win. If you look around, the good guy always wins or those who seem evil then turn good. While Ainz is bad, he is selfish, that's all. I think the adaptation so far has been brilliant, literally even secondary characters are so enjoyable, and everyone is likeable. I hope it continues this way and for once, evil wins. Hopefully, not like Deth Note, which should have ended with the victory of evil…
My only grype was that they did the movie out of order in the middle of a season. I get it they couldnt do the kingdom part in a single movie but it screws with the pacing big time thogh that blatant tranlation error didnt helped either.

Actually it makes sense since "Justice" in this world is from only those at the top.
Slaine Theocracy is based on that "FEAR" and racist against non-humans.
If Ainz was weak, he would get kill as another undead "monster" and all hits items would consider as loots.
"Genocide" is something Adventurers do it everyday to gather items for alchemist.
I suggest you watch conversation between Ainz and Zanach again.
I am genuinely confused on the pronunciation in the English dubbed of Overlord IV. I do know that the English dubbed is not even able to touch subbed and or Japanese raw (with most anime at least). I would argue though that the voice acting in every season I’ve noticed a TON of effort and so much chemistry between all of these seasons current and old. What I am confused on is I hear albedo’s name change from Al-bed-doe to All-bae-do. Am I crazy and or needing hearing aids but doesn’t it seem butchered. I’ve tried looking it up all night everywhere to no one asking this specific question on Reddit and or anything alike. If anyone knows something I don’t know please let me know thanks. 😅😅❤

I suggest that the points at which you feel discomfort or something unusual during this series, that's deliberate on the part of the author and you should think about that. Enjoy the trip!
We are seen the evil characters in the serie, Ains is evil , almost every NPC is evil, that is why a lot of people see the serie we love the Dark Grim Fantasy , and the people with our taste didn't feel uneasy in any part because of that
I love the series but the finale did not pay off. Now season 3 had the perfect finale. Also princess Renner isn't interesting enough to be the only character built up to be saved. They should have at least ended it with Gazed Stronnof being resurrected, and why buildup Brain Unglos just to unceremoniously kill him off without any payout of his characters journey... Not the best season

Not sure if this is a troll, assuming it’s not, please point out where I said I was sympathetic to Ainz and condoned his actions? I merely stated his plan. It’s a fantasy fictional story where a man is stuck in a video game killing NPCs.

@@otakuspirit Honestly, it was almost 4am when I watched this and I was very tired. After rewatching I see that I was off-base in thinking that. Apologies. I actually agree with a lot of your thoughts on Ainz and the series as a whole. While I enjoyed season 4 overall I thought the execution was sloppy and I didn't care for how they decided to cut an entire arc out of the middle of the story, which I hear is going to be released as a movie at a later date. That created a lot of confusion for anime only consumers

Great review i really enjoyed this season as well! And yes i did have some of the same issues with the side characters being built up only to be fodder for nazarick ofc it make sense why since that entire tomb is op but sometimes i wish they’d be given a real challenge. I hope you watch the movie since it’s in between the elf/dragon arc that you didn’t like that much should be a lot more fun.

I was following the Light Novel for this series for a while but I ended up drooping it when they spent a majority of a volume building up this team of adventurers, making it seem like they were going to be the readers eyes into the humans of the world, just for them to get slaughtered in Nazzarik. I don't mind it happening once or twice, but it seems to happen almost too much and it makes it hard to get invested at times. I should probably go back to the series but it just left a bad taste in my mouth
