This is why they should do 2 variants of the winter mooring, Class one is free, you can moor anywhere and not move as much as you want but there are no services provided, this would be the "we leave you alone" option. Class two. the paid for option, CRT get there proverbial digits out of there canal tunnel and provide facilities at said winter moorings and then they can warrant charging you to stay there (not that a water point isn't going to freeze anyway lol). Of course most constant cruisers would choose the free option, but at least then it would actually be an option. Just my 2p
Only paid for winter mooring once because our neighbour went to Nepal and asked us to look after his boat, seemed a better idea than towing a 57’ everywhere but it did annoy us. Winter is a fab time to travel so much quieter and if the weather is bad just put an extra vest on 😆🦆
Great video, totally agree. It also means continuous cruisers end up with compromised mooring spots, that are on their boats and not just parking them.
CRT seem to behave more like a profit centred business than a trust - they seem to want everyone to moor up in a marina so they get their percentage and then spend any income on improving the towpaths and environs for the non licence paying public. Yes the canals and rivers should be enjoyed by all but don't kill the cash cow simply to appease the marketing department. CRT, destroy the boating industry and then see who'll pay your wages.
Yes. I agree with you. CRT have started justifying their actions by saying that 40% of their income is via Government grants paid, in the main, by the general public.
must agree with you, we were all ready to sign up for a winter mooring a couple of years ago and then quickly realised all we were getting was " Nothing" - so signed up with a small wharf for similar cash and we got " everything" !!
I noticed the few that have taken the Winter moorings offer are mainly empty boats. So I guess they use the boat and move it around in the warmer months but don't use it in Winter. I suppose it's cheaper than a marina and they don't need the facilities as they live in a house. For people like us that live aboard, it's a rip off! Like you say, we have to move every two weeks to get water and on your return your previous spot could be taken.
I’ve only seen a couple vids, and live in the US, but it seems that living in a marina the boats are stacked up side by side and you have much less privacy than out on the canal where the boats are lined end to end..
well its a ripoff then! you have to move to services, while your gone someone swipes your paid for spot, you come back, they wont shift... now you need to moor elewhere! thats just stupid! yea use a marina... all you need over winter then run like blazes as soon as spring/summer arrives! im with mylo! he gets my vote 😊
Myles McDowell. Sadly, I now no longer live on a narrow boat due to age and a slight infirmity. Your video was, however, very interesting as my moorings were in a Marina in the Birmingham area where all the facilities your were describing are present. I used to think that British Waterways were rip-off artists with some of their schemes over tow-path moorings and their lack of the essentials for boaters, but to hear that the C&RT are continuing with what I would describe as fraud by demanding further licence/permit money for Winter moorings without any basic facilities at all is a disgrace.
Interesting. I know nothing about canal life but when the present authority was set up I felt it would be just a matter of time before the intrinsic value of moorings was realised. I do hope those who live on boats see the wisdom of supporting a strong representative body to counter the commercial interests they are up against.
I think that originally they were very inexpensive and more extensive, only three years ago, , this proved popular, so the CRT decided to make more money, limit the spaces. This is not popular ...................
On my second winter mooring now, the one last year was rural and lovely, this one is dead central in a city. I think for me (small boat) they're good value. Both times (outside of London) I've just looked at it as a cheap marina. Not had my spot stolen yet
I bought a winter mooring this year to keep CRT off my back. It's been four months and I haven't taken the boat there yet (it doesn't look very nice and is too far from facilities) but am using the licence as insurance incase CRT tells me off. I hadn't realised that I still have to do the same distance to meet CRT guidelines when I'm off the mooring, so that'll be 20ish miles in seven months if I want to avoid hassle when the licence is due to renew.
What’s the point in paying for something that your license covers you for in the first place!! During winter you can moor up for 4 weeks ie the length of time doubles over the period of winter. “Notice” on the signs only states you have priorities if you have a permit, doesn’t mean you actually need one. 2. You never see any towpath license clockers over winter ❄️ it’s too cold for them! 3. They don’t have any powers to move you on & only threatening to revoke your license! (They lose money if they do!). 4. Stand your ground & everyone should do the same, they will soon soon back off in the long term.
This is true for 48 hour spots for eg, during winter times you can stay 14 days, but you can't double up the continuous cruising 14 day time slot unless as Milo says the ice or health or something gets in the way. Just confirmed it with CRT on their website chat (how much truth you'll find there is another debate entirely haha).
In theory charging for mooring on the towpath is unlawful, it is money paid for CRT to ignore the law of only 14 days in one place, commonly called a bribe. But unless someone's got £50,000 spare to take CRT to court winter moorings will continue. They are an absolute con in my opinion.
I’d say it’s cheap compared to marina I pay 80 a month for a mooring in a nice village with a train station shop and all the facilities plus it’s near where I work
It is indeed a genious scheme. However, it is also completely pointless as it doesn't guarantee you a spot anywhere and this should be the very least of the benefits of signing up to it. It is "Money for Nothing" as the ditty goes. Another side to the coin is that Continuous Cruisers, by virtue of their nomadic lifestyle choice, do not contribute in any way to the services they consume in a given area, such as policing, road maintenance, schooling and the hundred and one other thigs supplied by local councils. This is because they are never 'resident' and therefore pay no council tax. They surely can't expect everything handed to them on a platter can they? Many 'continuously cruise' in order to avoid paying Council Tax and these are the consequences. The CRT have their nuts in a vice and will inevitably crank up the pressure when it suits them to extract the cash.
if they're continuously cruising then I can't see how they would be "consuming" any services in any given area. Schools, roads, policing??????? I don't think so.
Yes absolutely in nearly every case the facilities you are being charged for are being provided by a third party a marina or a village or town. Youhave already paid to moore any where on the tow path side. What do they do with all the money ,as little as possible in my experience. Until the crt are run and staffed by enthusiasts the system will continue to be in steady decline .
Nothing upsetting here Mylo, I agree with you completely; winter moorings do seem to be a bit of a rip off. But as you say, a bloody genius idea. I'm glad there are plenty of smart people at CRT thinking up ways to make more money so they can keep the canal system maintained. I'm even more happy there are people like you sharing their first hand experiences of these schemes. We certainly won't be buying a winter mooring. Keep up the great work Mylo.
I agree with everything that you said. Though I do think it's not such a big deal. Just don't get one. Hopefully if more people get to talk about it and raise their concerns to CRT, then CRT might make a few tweaks to the scheme.
CRT have increased income over the last 3 years but managed to decrease the amount of permits sold by almost a hundred and metres of moorings sold by almost 2000. They are also allowing residential mooring for up to 5 months without informing local councils or seeking planning consent. Yes, its a scam.
In Japan they have car parks that are actually elevators, course that might be a slight problem for those that like to pee off the end of their homes or wash dishes, but the view would be great, sort of like living on a ferris wheel in the carnival......lol

I suppose whether you find it a rip-off or not depends on how much you have to pay. It does seem unreasonable to charge if no facilities are being provided, but remember that it does cost money to maintain the canals, and winter mooring fees are something you can choose to pay or not. The alternative might be to increase license fees and that would hit everybody.
CRT receive government funding plus the licence fee. Winter moorings are the extra cream on the cake. If the law states you should move every 14 days then thats the law end of, not if you pay us the law does not apply. Also, CRT get half of every mooring fee for each boat in a marina, thats why they are so expensive, and they charge people who have private moorings at end of gardens or pubs, farms etc. People do not understand how financial situations work in regards to large organisations. Let me explain. The funding CRT receive is purely for general maintenance, wages, admin/ running cost and so on. A few tweaks would make the scheme a whole lot better. Try making areas permit holders only to ensure permit holders have a chance of getting a space and placing these areas close to a facilities point are just a couple of thing that would make permits better value.
