What's really interesting about this to me is that the cost to restore coral reefs is much less than the cost to build an artificial sea barrier, so there is actually a lot of incentive for restoration...

We shouldn't destroy nature, it's what keeps alive. Nature is beautiful, leave it alone.

.....Great barrier reef - there were 2 natural bleaching events, followed by a cyclone. We should leave it alone, and.....not be human to revive it....We are human for a reason.

As a Scuba Diver I know it's so important to save the coral reefs, without them our planet will suffer and we will lose one of the most beautiful and mysterious sites on our planet.
Let's work together to save our planet 😊

There is a fish shop near me, that are rebuilding the coral population from existing coral by cultivating it in their store and then sending it to places that need it. I loved hearing about their efforts to save the reefs.

There are so many things in our planet that are going extinct and so many problems its unbelievable. I honestly think the world would be better with only 1 million of people instead of 9 billions...

How about no people at all, history shows the longer we are around the worst thing get. The good news is that the average man lives less than 100 years so if your a selfish person who does what to die then no worries! Death from total planet destruction will not happen in your time. But don't take my word for it I'm only human, sure you familiar with how humans operate.

MrDiscreet100 well thats indeed a good thing. But in my 28 years... I have seen many shit happens during the short 28 years I have been living...... can't imagine whats going to happen in 60 years... Never underestimate humans in masses.....

Not so, education upon coral and marine systems is thriving, im graduating with marine biology and many others are too. Yes education to the wider public is required but funding for this and other projects is the greatest issue, being around the islands top marine biologist ive realised most funding comes from overseas, which states the country cant afford to push coral mitigation that much.

I rememberai few years ago i went on a scuba diving hoilday in Egypt and it was simply amazing I see all the different forms of life which are all around the coral, and just how a coral reef looks in real life when you are here it is simply beautiful. If anyone ever gets the chance you should go scuba diving it is amazing to see the under water world it will make you want to protect and make make sure the coral can survive

Im asking a simple question. Is all coral edible. Coral grows and build homes i think. I remember when i first seen a sea horse and a sea star. I still think sea life is the most beautiful living things on earth. Im open to information. I want to figure out what is the main source of a reef actually forming. Is it due too non sea life debris falling into to the ocean and the organisms change and adapt to life in the sea. i have so many questions. Have a good day

A very important topic but, Parrot fish feed on the corals, they are an indication of a healthy coral number. Corals do not increase because of Parrot fish it's the opposite.

    Correlation and causation.
Are the corals thriving *because* of the parrot fish, or are the parrot fish happening to thrive in the same conditions that cause the coral to thrive?

  • @reprisler

coral "blanching"? no...it's called coral bleaching, because they turn white after the zooxanthelae are expelled. but great video, hardly anyone knows that this is happening.

Well hawaii is doomed, spearfishermen shoot a lot of these guys because there really good eating. They also sleep in caves at night in there mucus and are easy picking for a night dive ( which is illegal to do so at night ) the island of Maui passed a law that you can't shoot male UHU (hawaiian for pariot fish) and I think they made a bag size per day limit to. Please help pass these laws on the neighbor islands. There's plenty of other fish in the sea, why shoot the ones that take care of are reefs, if the reef is what brings in the fish in the first place.

Hey Trace, you mentioned global warming in this episode. My personal opinions aside, it was recently posted online that NOAA stands accused of altering historical temperature data from the Dust Bowl era...something about that being the hottest day of all time, and then not, and then again. Could you do a segment on the overall story with this? To avoid picking sides and starting a maelstrom of craziness, could you perhaps present the existing both sides of the arguments (the data/research that supports global warming and the data/research that refutes it) from a scientific perspective? Thanks a bunch, and love watching the DNews from all y'all!

It bothers me a little when Tracy always ends up with something like "but all hope is not lost" and "this could be a solution". NO, if we humans live, consume and eat like we do today, ALL hopes are lost, there is no some solution out there, WE need to change drastically. And how I see it, the change will come too late, we too far from sustainable living on this planet, there is not enough time and most importantly humans do not give a shit for anything but themselves.

+Iscore4 then again if people say there animals then as a compromise they should be called "plant animals" which in my own words is a living that acts both as a plant and animal because then at least some people will stop outright calling them animals because they look and act like plants at least a bit though and no animal is sessile (expect as said in the earlier comment at least some bivalves) though I will acknowledge they do act like a little bit like animals like for example they have skeletons so no I am not dumb just annoyed that they say those things as it's all explained above (apologies for any bad grammar it can be easy to miss a letter and do other stupid mistakes when using an iPad)

+Iscore4 well to put it simply (no pun intended) it wasn't always simple that coral are apparently animals it wasn't until I think the 18th century that some scientist (whose name I have forgot) was able to apparently prove that coral are animals, I think he apparently proved it by using a microscope

+Mario87456 certain discoveries were unknown in the 18th century so this doesn't surprise me
