Just wow. That second movement had me constantly on the verge of tears. That theme at the beginning of mvt. 2 that appears in a number of his works is just beautiful.

Thank you so much for this. I love Poulenc. He is desperately underappreciated here (U.S.).

I think this is because he doesn't fall into any convenient category. Academic types dismiss him as schmaltzy and frivolous, I guess. But his music is actually quite complex and not to any popular taste. It's also very French.
Having said that - *I* sure appreciate him, and perform him (in the SF area) when I can, including this piece, the flute sonata, the trio for oboe/bassoon/piano, and his various piano works.

I know of few other great composers - Franz (Ferenc) Liszt springs to mind - who have been so misunderstood, stereotyped and condescended to. The more one hears of Poulenc's music, the more its incredibly strength, integrity and honesty shine forth. Music built to last! Thank you. :-)

@@andrewpetersen5272he's definitely underappreciated in the typical classical listener's ear.

Merveilleux interprète de cette sonate où l'on retrouve la verve de ce compositeur inventif qui utilise au mieux les instruments . Une totale séduction !

4th movement has that Prokofiev vibe to it. I like it. Not a huge of this recoding, but I was looking at this piece today and Jesus Christ, it’s not easy. Unless you’re press off a thumb position shifting Popper etude, this Sonata is a SOB to play/practice/perform.

Poulenc dedicated this Sonata to Pierre Fournier, and Jacques Février was the composer's longtime friend and fellow-pianist (and recorded the Concerto for Two Pianos with him), so I'm puzzled by your cool reaction to the recording. I will grant that the engineering (or the digital mastering) isn't especially friendly to the ears. Thank you.

5:49 This melody is extremely similar to the "Très Calme" section of the 1st mvt of Poulenc's Concerto for Two Pianos!!!

Hey Miguel. I thought I heard this melody before, you’re right! I came to a similar conclusion of Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G Major, 2nd Movement, with a touch of Camille Saint Saëns The Swan. It’s crazy how much this piece brings to mind the works of other big names of the time period. For example, the theme that appears at 7:55 and again remodulated at 8:27 sounds eerily similar to a recurring motif in Kabalevsky’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in D Major, First Movement (link below) At around 0:55 the motif appears. It’s really interesting to see the influences composers can have on each other!

A rich, gorgeous, generous work: Perhaps the middle two movements are the best, but everything Poulenc write is touched with his individual magic. I wonder why cellists not often programme it. Yes, that finale looks very hard. That 3/4 section in the Finale is very mysterious. I wonder if the Cantilena and Ballabile would work well, with appropriate revoicings, on the viola.
