met a little child who was more mature than this man. We don't have service dogs but she still approached carefully and asked us from a distance if she can pet our dogs. We said no (one of our dogs have anxiety). She smiled and said she understood since she has dogs as well and thanked us for letting her watch them from afar.

My parents drilled into my siblings and I to ask the owners of a dog before petting it. And if they had a service dog vest on, we shouldn’t pet them in general. Sometimes it baffles me that some people don’t have that common sense, but I guess it’s just a testament to how good my parents are.

I live in a block of flats. Huge building, lots of people. Recently I was petsitting for a month's, super cute, little girl (3 months old). The ONLY people that asked if they can pet her, and actually WAITED for my reply, were kids! So, i allowed kids to pet her, play with her, and I gave them treats so they could give her.
Adults just got an earful or a cold shoulder. Nah, I'm lying, I bollocked whoever touched her.
I also have a 6 yo son, he doesn't touch dogs without my permission. It can be a service dog or it can be dog that bites (or one that is scared and bites), etc.

My whole neighborhood knows to always ask cuz my dog is MASSIVE and has been through 5 years of Abuse before I rescued her. She doesn’t like children especially, and even the kids here know to ASK. Most just walk away because they know my dog and how she behaves, yes even the kids walk away.
She used to be very aggressive when I first rescued her and she’s run away several times so my whole neighborhood knows her. She’s kind when she doesn’t feel threatened, but sometimes she does snip. Now, I’ve been trying to train her to stop for 6 years now and got the bites to go away and now we are at snips when feeling threatened. Call me a bad dog momma all you want, I’m doing my best on a dog that used to get beat, starved, and neglected DAILY FOR 5 YEARS, it’s not so simple when that’s how they grew up. She does love people and other dogs I just have to be careful with her. She never gets mean when she runs off (usually after a deer in the woods when I’m tryna put her leash on), she plays with the neighbors dogs and stuff based off of what my neighbors have told me. She’s friendly but you have to be careful, because she’s also traumatized

It's also disrespectful towards the handler as well as the dog. Asking a dog trained to be non-aggressive if he wants being petted is selfish and you already decided either way that you won't accept no for an answer. I adopted a dog from a shelter a few years back. He was basically teenaged when I got him, add to that the fact that he's a husky mix, and you have quite the package on your hands.
He loves being pet, but only during calm situations, like when we're on the sofa, or on my bed together, cuddling. If we're preparing to go somewhere he won't hold his head still for you to pet.
He has this rather typical polar dog/husky trait where he is rather mouthy. I've done my best to train out some more problematic things, but when he gets super excited (like when a stranger wants to say hello) he can't contain himself.
Thus I'm OK with people saying hello to him, so long as I can first explain what will happen, because he will get ECSTATIC and try to hold your hand, which if you're not prepared might feel like he's trying to bite you.
He won't, but if you freak out because you're not prepared for his excitement, and he bounces up and down, accidents could happen. So don't pet random dogs without asking their human first.

I really feel this one. I have a German shepherd and a husky, and I hate the people that will just reach down to pet, even though they’re not service dogs or anything, but they don’t ask first. My German shepherd is immediately aggressive and snarling as she’s very protective, and my husky will act fine and then suddenly snap and bite as he does not know the person and is weary. Then when the people get bitten, they look at you like you’re crazy, eventhough they didn’t even ask in the first place.
And don’t even get me started on the people that walk their dogs without a lead, let their dogs run up to mine and then ask if my dogs are friendly of which they are not!! Then they panic when my dogs go crazy!

@@The_LoRaX_loves_TREES Service dogs are specifically trained for situations when their human doesn't respond to their marks, and that is also a part of training most handlers need to repeat periodically. Besides, you are not entitled to pet anyones dog, get over it. And as the other person said, service dogs have two modes. Distracting them when they're in work mode is a huge no and when repeated, will lead to them learning bad habits and unlearning good habits. It's literally illegal under federal law for a reason. If you do, she will bark at you. If you push it, I have no doubt you’ll get bitten. She wears a bright yellow and black “caution” collar to help avoid situations like this.

I’m a Walmart employee and the amount of times I’ve had to loudly announce to a customer a variation of “that dog is working. Could you please stop distracting or attempting to pet this customer’s service dog” has happened much more than I’d like.
Thankfully, it seems that having an employee tell them to stop and disapprove of their action makes them back off and stop.
It’s a wonder people still don’t understand that distracting a service dog could potentially mean life or death for their owner and should never assume the purpose for a service dog. Always assume the most severe in case the severe could happen.

Unfortunately there are a lot of entitled people who think they deserve the world. I also believe it won't stop even if someone passes away or is severely hurt due to not being alerted by their service companion. I should know. My best friend ended up having a GM sezure while on an outing and an entitled person insisted on distracting the service dog. They ended up with chopped and broken teeth as well as a concussion among other injuries. If they had been altered they would have been able to prevent a fair amount of the damaged caused.

When I was working in a medical centre, we had a few people come in with their service dogs. I’d always ask the patients if it was okay to give them a bowl of water while they were waiting and most of the time they said yes. I’d bring them the bowl to give to their dog or if the patient said it was okay I’d place it on the ground near them and admire the dog from a distance, using a smile and letting the patient know I thought their dog was cute.
It’s astonishing how this isn’t common knowledge yet. Never touch a service dog while they’re working…. On a similar note, never touch anyone’s dog (working or otherwise) without asking the owner. Just seems like common decency.
Completely understand all the animal lovers just wanting to pet and give love to all the fur babies they see. But take a step back and respect people’s boundaries, it usually has nothing to do with you as a person. 🧡

I smiled at her and told her "cute dog" and she went ballistic, saying over and over not to touch the dog, when I wasn't even anywhere near it. It made me sad to think that it had to happen to her so often that it causes her emotional distress. I never touched the dog, or tried to distract it, but she felt the need to tell me to leave it alone. Some people don't have respect for boundaries, and clearly she was done dealing with it.     It’s really disturbing that people keep defending this guy, so here are reasons why this is NOT OKAY;
1 it’s illegal to distract a medical service dog, just like it’s illegal to distract a police dog, end of story. Don’t.
2, He has a vest on that says not to pet him, it explains what he is, if someone’s pet is literally wearing a vest that says don’t touch, then DO NOT TOUCH.
3, she explicitly told him not to, multiple times, no means no. Again, for the people in the back, NO MEANS NO, period. You do not touch anyone / their child / their pregnant belly / their dog / their hair / their tattoos / their stuff in general without their permission and especially if they tell you not to, it’s not only disrespectful, it is ILLEGAL to harass others, leave them alone.
4, Everyone saying “what if he’s disabled / has memory problems / doesn’t understand her saying no?” She confirmed that he understood perfectly well, but you can even hear him argue with her in the video. He knows she’s asking him to stop, he is refusing. Consent isn’t complicated. I work with people who have cognitive impairment, you need to be so impaired that you cannot speak in full and even partial sentences in order to fail to grasp the EXTREMELY fundamental concept of “don’t” or “no.” It is very basic human communication, that’s why even two year olds know it. He’s able to walk around a store on his own and have a full conversation, he knows what no means.
4, she has a medical condition and could get injured if the dog is distracted at a bad time, this is a big deal, it’s the equivalent of asking to take someone’s wheelchair for a joy ride, condoning this behavior is not okay and makes life for people like her much harder, please stop.
5, she said in the comments that he literally blocked her path to try to force her to let him pet the dog after she told him multiple times not to, that’s why she had to turn around in the video.
