  • The Video pod for the FPV video TX, MinimOSD, and pan/tilt PZ0420 camera is completed.
    There is an explanation of the wiring with circuit diagram or schematic. Interesting feature is that the pod will operate without being on the plane or connected to the Ardupilot Mega 2.6 because it has a separate power source.

    Once you fix that schematic you should have it available for download. Be nice to have that. I have been following/enjoying this build and have learned a lot. I'm building a hexacopter and I'm using many of the same things you are. If my parts ever arrive I'll be following much of your directions.

    Was wondering if you soldered the 2 points on the back of the MinimOSD board as detailed in your schematic because there was no 12 volt feed running parallel through the back end of the board with the video feed transition where it picks up the telemetry readings... heading to the FPV transmitter...

  • @exclusive-technology3798
    @exclusive-technology3798 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Another related question somewhat addressed in another question.. I was wanting to multi function with the APM telemetry output feeds... paralleling Bluetooth BT2S TTL UART ( for tablet Mission Planner view ), the standard 3DR Telemetry wireless ( for laptop Mission Planner view ) and the MinimOSD for FPV display... I have seen and have the impression.. the MinimOSD does not need the RX connected because it does not receive any signals... where the 3DR Wireless and Bluetooth need both RX TX...

    Great series Dave! I am putting together a similar system and was wondering about the capacitor that you used. I couldn't find a 3.3uF at the Shack. Where did you get yours and how did you decide to use one? Thanks!

    • @DaveMerc
      @DaveMerc  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The cap came from my junk pile of components I collected over the years.
      I tried various sizes until I found one that did not degrade the signal. You could probably use a different value and get it to work. I also suspect it could just be left out but I didn't try that. This was my way around my fear of a DC offset damaging the APM and not from any science or engineering. Usually the APM is capable of powering the MinimOSD without any trouble so my fears may be unfounded.

  • @openboxGr
    @openboxGr 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    congrats for the knowledge you share... but why did you add the 3.3uF capacitor between the apm and minimosd? what are the purpose for this?

    • @DaveMerc
      @DaveMerc  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 3.3uF capacitor was a preventive measure in case there was a DC offset between the video power system and the APM power system. Probably this is not needed.

    Dave, thank you for the informative videos. The schematic that you attached here is very helpful. I have a question about your setup. I believe that you installed the telemetry radio and the video radio together in the plane. In this video you have the signal and ground leads from the OSD in the camera pod back to the APM. Can I assume that you created another breakout cable to have the OSD and the telemetry radio both plugged into the 3DR Radio connector on the APM?

    • @DaveMerc
      @DaveMerc  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is correct. Servo lead wires were used to extend the cable to the 3DR Radio and to split off the two wires for the MinimOSD.

  • @badkeene
    @badkeene 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    just a little question i have , i am using the Fat shark-immersion video goggles , now the cables on those are very short , can i just extend them with servo wire ?

    • @DaveMerc
      @DaveMerc  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      steven keene You can try but I think what you need is a shielded video extension cable with RCA plugs. It's a common item for home video stuff.

    Hi, two quick questions. I've heard a lot of people saying that the minim osd cuts the range on the lrs systems to only a quarter mile? is this something that you have tested or have you changed something to prevent that? Also, what program do you use for your wiring diagrams. I would like to create some but dont know what to use. Your videos have been very helpful, i am creating my own long range system with all of the same components with the exception of the lrs. Im using dragon link. Your videos are very helpful

    • @DaveMerc
      @DaveMerc  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have heard that too and Dragon Link has a fix. I am using EZUHF which doesn't seem to have that problem. Never the less I have placed the minimOSD in nose and the EXUHF LRS antenna on the tail as far apart as possible. However I have not ranged checked it yet. The schematics are from the Ardu Plane wiki and all I did was modify them with photoshop. You could use a CAD program like smartdraw, DFX or google markup.

    Hi Dave, Thanks for sharing this info, your videos are great!!, I want to ask you what is the bennefit of usign the video battery for feeding the minimosd? Thanks!!!

    • @DaveMerc
      @DaveMerc  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's just a matter of preference. I wanted to have the video pod be self contained. It will transmit video even when it's not on the plane.
      Also it reduces the number of long wires running back and forth.

    I think the CG figgers I gave you are pretty close and I like my planes a little nose heavy. This one for sure. Tail heavy on this bugger is real bad BAD.
    Can you go out back and fly on the golf course?

    Nice update, not being picky, but your 12v and Gnd labels on your diagram going to the Bec are the wrong way around, it shows your 3S lipo 12v going to Bec Gnd and 3S Gnd going to 12v of theBec

  • @BreatheRC

    so is it right to keep the ariels for the receiver and vtx as far apart as pos or do you need to get the vtx away away from the receiver too ? great video

    • @DaveMerc
      @DaveMerc  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The antennas are the important things to keep separated in my opinion.

    • @BreatheRC

      ***** thanks i was unsure as everyone seems to move the complete unit out but it makes sense with the antennas

    • @DaveMerc
      @DaveMerc  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Breathe - RC Some people leave the TX unit in the body of the aircraft and run SMA cable out to the tip of the wing for the antenna. Seems to work well.

    • @BreatheRC

      Breathe - RC Should work great on the X5.
      Check out Dick Gibson's channel. He has an X5 setup like that.

    sorry i ment on my fat shark camera to immersion video tx :) , i would love to place the video tx on the wing tip but then i need at least 80cm of extension but not sure what cables to use as fatshark doesnt sell extensions .

    • @DaveMerc
      @DaveMerc  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      steven keene Good question but unfortunately I have never studied that. I would like know the answer if you find out. My guess is you can just use servo cable and keep it a few inches away from the other wires to prevent noise from the servos getting in the video.

    Dave as You are familiar with all APM systém now maybe You could help me.
    Could be possible to design systém with APM 2.5/2.6, telemetry 433mhz [I am in EU], minimOSD, FPV with realtime sound + live data on screen, and + antenna tracking on the ground ? What is critical point to reach that systém? Is it vTx, which must have stereo audio transmitting capability? Antenna trackers needs some data from OSD, which are often transmitted trough audio channel. Then second audio channel is needed for live sound . Am I right? Or Am I totaly wrong?
    I wanna build plane with APM 2.5 [I have it at home] and functions as I described. I am confused in this, because I do not see any audio output from minimOSD to vTx.
    If You have any idea, help me please. Eddie

    • @DaveMerc
      @DaveMerc  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The minimOSD only mixes video. You can add a microphone to the audio input on the VTX. The immersion VTX that I am using is only monaural so stereo is not possible. My minimOSD actually injects a lot of noise/hum into the audio so I use an amplified mic to try to get above the noise floor. That helps some but the sound is still not good. Not sure if I have a bad MinimOSD or if they all have this audio interference. The video is not affected and looks good.
      I would be interested to see if you experience the same audio noise problem when the OSD is powered on.
      At this point I have no idea about antenna tracking. I plan on just manual tracking by turning the patch antenna pole.

    • @EddieVichta
      @EddieVichta 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Hmmm... thanx Dave. I will let you know. It will not be soon, as I am just in starting faze... It will také 2 months. I thing noise and interference is reason for separate power on minimOSD.[5v from APM and clean 12v for video section. If You merge it by solder jumpers all power is dirty on minimOSD.. But my question is if minim OSD has audio o/i at all? My camera will have microphone. Ok, we will see...
      I can not wait for Your flight!!! GL.

    Hi dmerc00
    Big congratulations first!!! Nice systém, nice videos - very helpfull !!
    Just little confusing - You speak about 12V video section, diagram shows 3cell lipo, but on the video 7:59 I clearly see 2 cell lipo... Am i missing something?

      Thanks for the comments. Hope to fly soon as the weather is better.
      So far my setup has not changed for what you saw in the video.
      It has proven to work well in all bench testing. Yes the battery is a 750mah 3 cell and will run the vtx for over an hour.

    Great thank for your sharings but I didn’t understand that why do you connect the ground form APM , I always thought power & ground are the same + & - of battery
    , if they are, why get Additional ground from APM
    , if they are not, why the two ground & blk pins on minimosd are connected together and what it means to connect two ground to each other?!
    this is a bug on my mind and going to explode it!

    • @DaveMerc
      @DaveMerc  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I understand your question:
      It's because I have two batteries. Since I have a separate battery circuit for the OSD/Video pod I must also connect the ground from APM battery circuit with the ground from the OSD/Video circuit on the pod. Yes the GRD and BLK pins are connected on the OSD board (or at least on this version of the minimosd board) so it made a convenient place to join the grounds from the two systems.

    • @navbizh4858
      @navbizh4858 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for answering
      But I think the ground from apm is not needed, exactly because you have another battery and there is no need to apm power circuit, especially only exit path of current means ground
      I searched in the internet and if found only one case that two ground connect to each other, it was when you have a digital ground and an analog ground but in our case it think both of ground are analog so there is no need to apm ground.
      Did you test it without apm ground connection and it didn’t worked properly?

    • @DaveMerc
      @DaveMerc  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nav bizh It doesn't work without a ground from the APM. The reason is that I only have two wires coming from the APM to the MinimOSD. One wire is the ground and the other is the Mavlink signal. Removing the ground would break the circuit.

    • @navbizh4858
      @navbizh4858 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you mean the ground is exit path of signal wire,right?

    Really, you dont want one. The wings ripped right off it at 200 feet and i have been fighting Hobby King for months to replace it. They told me the warranty is void if i crash it. No shit i told them. However the plane carbon fiber rod snapped at 200 feet so what was i suppose to do. Hobby King is a terrible company and i will do my best to buy as many products elsewhere.
