Just another wonderful tutorial on how to make the lidded box. Sneaking up on a fit has always been difficult for me. I will practice your methods. Thanks for sharing your knowledge sir.
Another tutorial well done Mike. It's a beautiful little box. Simple design to show off the lovely grain. I prefer videos like this one to run about 15 minutes. They usually get a bit tedious when they are longer. But here we are at over 24 minutes and I never had a thought about the time and then it was over. I attribute that to your organization, explanation and excellent narration. You are quite easy to listen to. I also prefer to see just a bit of the sanding and finishing but your description said it all quite well. The only thing you said I take exception to is: "You can always take off some wood but you cannot put it back on". Of course you can put it back on. As woodworkers we often glue a little sliver or piece of veneer to an area that has been shaved a bit to thin. I have done that and I would bet you have too. Thank you for sharing Mike. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Very hepful as I prepate to make my first box, thanks so much. I likeand appreciate your mdthodical, calm approach, and will sterive to follow suit. Kind regards from an appreciative Kiwi..
Mike, GREAT as usual. I’ve missed your videos. Weather here has been very wet and windy…making my shop access very uncomfortable. Aren’t you coming to USA for a turning symposium soon? Or, did I miss you. Roger from California.
Very good set of videos on making a box! As I knew turner I found it to be very informative ….. Thank you Mike 🤠🇨🇱. Question: Noticed on your back wall that your turning tools seem to be “clipped” at the shaft to the wall. What type of clips did you use?
Thanks Randy, I just use spring clips positioned at ferrule height so as not to mark the handle, the base of the tool sits in a half round "cup". Thanks for watching.
Very well done. I’ve seen turners have the top overlap the bottom joint and yours the bottom overlapped the top. Is it preference or a reason? I mostly see endgrain boxes like yours but is it possible to do sidegrain boxes, I.e., orientation like a bowl?
Thank you. It is just my personal preference to have the tenon on the lid, as I think the body looks better when the lid is removed. It is possible to turn side grain boxes, but light cuts with a sharp tool needed to minimise tear out. Thanks for watching.
