Yes, the thief on the cross was fortunate to be with the Messiah that day. He rebuked the other thief, and accepted his fate. He wasn't as fortunate as we are to have the holy spirit to guide us, and teach us to know the difference between wrong and right. We should never try and justify sin, and quench the spirit.

The enemies of Christ were used by the almighty to preach the gospel to this thief. 'He saved others, himself he does not save'. 'Save yourself if you are the Christ of God'. And Jesus prayed, Father forgive them because they (sin in) not knowing what they do'.

In the case of a person who had their tongue cut out and their hands bound, God would forgive them if they were one of His chosen disciples.
John 15:16 You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you, that you should go and you should bear fruit, and your fruit should remain, so that whatever you might ask the Father in My name, He may give you.
John 6:44 “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day.
      64. However, there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray Him.)
      65. Then Jesus said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to Me unless the Father has granted it to him.”
From that time on many of His disciples turned back and no longer walked with Him. John 6:66

The theif on the cross had faith, he believed, he repented, and he was justified by works when he defended Jesus.
    Scripture tells us so:
    The Book Of James ch.2
"You foolish person, do you want evidence that faith without works is useless? Was not our father Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,” and he was called God’s friend. You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone.
In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction? As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead."

"he knew / he wanted / he feared" all these statements fly in complete contradiction to the Calvanism John Macarthur professes to be the truth.
Why didn't John Macarthur just say "one of the men next to Jesus was chosen for salvation before the foundation of the earth, the other wasn't"
It's makes no sense to me

Calvinism (not Calvanism) in no way discounts a sinner's knowing, wanting, or fearing. It simply says that the Holy Spirit works to give these things to a sinner. And by the way, one does not have to be a Calvinist to be saved.

How does this contradict the election of God in salvation? Was the thief who was saved better in any way than the other thief? What differentiated them? Was it the thief’s good heart? No! It was God who quickened the heart of the thief and granted him repentance unto life in Christ and so therefore, ALL glory be to God for saving that thief that day

The thief on the cross confusion.Luke 23:39 And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us. 23:40 But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? 23:41 And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss. 23:42 And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. 23:43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.First, Jesus did not promise him salvation.Second, the words "To day" means before sundown that day.Third, "paradise" is not heaven. So the thief did not go to heaven that day before sundown. The true meaning of paradise is garden:Strong's Greek 3857 parádeisos - an ancient Persian word meaning "enclosure, garden, park."It was used in a vwereariety of ways one of which was a cemetery or graveyard. These gardens referred to as paradise and some had caretakers called gardeners:John 20:15 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away. She thought him to be the gardener or caretaker of the the graves and tombs. This lets us know that the word paradise and graveyard or cemetery means a garden where the bodies of the dead were planted. When Jesus told the thief he would be in paradise with him that day before sundown he was speaking of the cemetery garden.Where did Jesus go that evening before sundown?Mat 27:57 When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple: Mat 27:58 He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered. Mat 27:59 And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, Mat 27:60 And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed. The burial of Jesus was at evening time before sundown. The burial of the thief was also at evening time before sundown. The answer is simple: since Jesus did not go to heaven that day before sundown, neither did the thief. So, paradise that Jesus spoke about was not in heaven. The thief went to the same graveyard as Jesus. He was not buried with Jesus in his tomb since it was a burial place for just one person. So, if Jesus was in paradise that day it was his grave in the cemetery graveyard. If the thief was in this cemetery paradise garden, it was in his own grave. When it was discovered the thief did not go to a paradise in heaven that day, the liars scrambled to find another way to save this thief. A catholic priest offered the doctrine that purgatory and paradise are the same thing. That there is a compartment in the spiritual world of the dead where unsaved souls can go until they are released by someone's prayers, paying money, or burning candles. So, paradise becomes a compartment in which people go until the resurrection. From this doctrine of a compartment in the spiritual world of the dead, the thief is still saved. Those who spread this false doctrine never admit paradise is not in heaven. They claim it is a compartment on earth. One Oneness Pastor told me it was in the heart of the earth and not in heaven. You decide: if the thief did not go to heaven the day he died to a paradise there, then where did he go? And was he saved? The Baptist say he went to heaven saved. They say this is proof a person is saved by grace and has no need of repentance, water baptism, or being filled with the Holy Ghost.I say, there is no offer of salvation to the thief. He lived and died under the Law. He will be judged by that Law.He was not in the New Testament Church because it was not started until the day of Pentecost more than 50 days later.Since he was not in the New Testament Church, he was not saved by grace through faith.Your decision. But if you tell lies and spread a false doctrine about this thief, you will not go to heaven to partake of the Tree of Life in the paradise garden of God. Rev_2:7 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.This paradise is not the same one Jesus spoke about to the thief.

Was the thief given the knowledge of who Jesus was by God.
    Matthew 16:16-17 KJVS
And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. [17] And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.
Perhaps this incident was similar to the following.
    John 9:1-3 KJVS
And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. [2] And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? [3] Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.

Of course, the thief was given the knowledge of who Christ is by God because “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day.”(‭‭John‬ ‭6:44‬)

Once during a performance of a strange angel song in an underpass downtown Ottawa, I suddenly found myself upon the cross of Jesus. It wasn't as though I was on the cross with Him, It was like I was Him.
I could see people before me on the ground dressed in robe/gown, and I knew for a moment what He went through.
A great amount of mockery and hatred were present.
When the angel had ended, we all got back to normal, and I walked over to the market and found the yokel burger joint. I used the money they had thrown in her song to pay for dinner.
    Thank you God.
    What a day!

Calvinists use the poor thief to defend their false belief that they can simply say the “sinner’s prayer”, and then continue to live a sinful life and then be saved at the end. A travesty.
