He fractured his right cheekbone in his face during that game. He also had triple vision and a concussion. They asked how he was still able to drain shots, and he said "I aimed for the one in the middle.", lol.
The team doctor told him he was done, but he left Bird alone for a minute, and he went back out on the court.

Larry won the first 3 3point contests-every time he entered! He was the founder & 2X member of the 50/40/90 club! He is the ONLY player EVER to have ROY, MVP, FMVP, Coach of the Year, & Executive of the Year! He is the only player ever to average 26/10/6. He was a master of the dagger 3, and the clutchest player EVER. He could shoot, pass & rebound & control the game without taking a shot. His passing alone was on par with Magic & his court awareness & bball IQ were unequalled. He could score from anywhere on the court. He’s worth a deep dive.

And in 89 when Larry was injured, it was won by Hodges of the Bulls. Reporters asked him if he only won because of Larry's absence he responded "Larry knows where to find me."
When Bird was told what Hodges said he responded "Yeah I know where, at the end of the Bulls bench."
      Savage lol

In the game against the Pacers when he went out hurt, he came back out with not only a broken cheek bone bit also a concussion. He said later that he saw two rims and had to decide which one to shoot at. The steal he had on the inbounds against the Pistons where he fed to DJ for the layup was the winning shot in game 5 of the Eastern Conference playoffs. It goes on and on, man.....

Magic & Larry, resurrected the game of basketball...My dad loved basketball, but stopped watching, until the competition between Johnson & Bird was highlighted...What my Dad used to say, about Larry's game, is that it reminded him of someone, who wasn't only playing basketball, but also, volleyball, dodgeball, football, soccer, & strategic chess, all at the same time, & what made him so great 😊He certainly was one of the most unique & gifted players, I ever watched! I always get a chuckle too, when I see Bird pause & stare as his opponent, before passing 😊

Bird went to Indiana State University - not a big basketball school. In his senior year he averaged 28.6 points, 14.9 rebounds and 5.5 assists and they went 33-0 before losing to Magic Johnson's Michigan State team in the NCAA Championship Game.

    • @WolfsDE

I live in Terre Haute. It is a big basketball school as for town and regional support. Because of being in the Missouri Valley Conference, they just don't get the same kind of recruits the bigger universities get.
But, Larry Bird. He is getting a Museum opened up this year in celebration of his career. He has a statue and small street outside the Hulman Center (the basketball arena) in his honor.
      This town honors it's legends.
Further proof we do. We have a street in town named Brown Ave.
It is named after Mordechai Brown, known as 3 finger Brown who played for the Chicago Cubs a little over 100 years ago. When he retired from Baseball, he owned a gas station in town.
So, if someone wants to build a legacy in Terre Haute, this is a great place to do it. Especially Baseball or Basketball.
Also, the basketball team, there is a good chance they win the Missouri Valley tournament and go into March Madness as a threat. They are really good this year.

Yes, he was good at shooting three's. He is the creator of the 50-40-90 club (and in it twice!) He wasn't a high volume 3 shooter, mostly because the 3 point was added his rookie year and it took him a couple of years (and a coach who let him shoot them) to master it. He NEVER saw a 3 point line until the NBA. Let that sink in. Context is a wonderful thing.

Larry played the last 7 years of his career with a severe back injury. Near the end, he even wore a full torso back brace at times. He even said that he would sometimes go into a game and wonder if he would end up in a wheelchair afterwards, due the the back injury and pain.
Yet in spite of the pain, he rarely missed a game, and his stats to this day are still impressive.
He also never took any painkillers, no shots no pills.

Wait until you see Larrys "ultimate passer / re-edit" video, he could do it all on the court except big poster dunks as he wasnt fast or able to jump but it just didnt matter Larry was a marksman of the highest order who won the very first three point contests in a row, had three MVP's in a row, could hit a shot from anywhere on the court, had the best court awareness ever seen and trash talked everyone into the weeds - he routinely called his shot and told the opposing team what he was going to do then always backed it up by doing just that - and im just scratching the surface - Larry Bird was the best all around player the NBA had ever seen or ever will see - the more videos you watch the more youll see what everyones talking about.

The Lakers-Celtics rivalry in the 1980s was a one of the greatest in all sports. Larry would have had another 3 or 4 good years in his career if he hadn't injured his back. he played the last 5 years or os of his career with what was essentially a broken back that would require him being in traction occasionally just to be able to BE at the game. He also missed all but 6 games of another season due to surgery on both achilles tendons and bone spurs in his heels. People said he was slow. Hell most people wouldn't have been walking in the shoe he was in most of the time yet there he was..

Here's a little context for you, young man.
The year before Larry Bird joined the Celtics, they were 29-53 and missed the playoffs. His rookie year, they were 61-21 and reached the Eastern Conference finals. His second year, they won the NBA title.
MJ improved the Bulls win total by 9 games in his rookie year. They lost in the first round of the playoffs (swept by the Celtics). Jordan didn't win his first ring until his sixth season. In fact, Jordan's Bulls never won a single playoff game, much less a series, against Bird's Celtics. Including regular season games, Jordan had a career losing record against Bird.
For further context, LeBron needed nine seasons to get his first ring. LeBron himself acknowledges that Bird is the best SF in NBA history.
I'm not trying to say that Bird was better than MJ, although I just made a pretty good case for him. But, if Larry Bird isn't on your all time starting five, you just haven't been watching.
For the record, a proper starting five of all time greats by position, might look like this:
    PG: Magic
    SG: MJ
    SF: Larry
    PF: Bill Russell
    C: Kareem
Yes, Russell was a natural 5. But he's got to be on that starting five, and I'm not sitting Kareem.
The backups on that team might look like this:
    PG: Isaiah Thomas
    SG: Kobe
    SF: LeBron
    PF: Tim Duncan
    C: Wilt Chamberlain
If you wanted to round the squad out with two additional role players, you might add:
Pistol Pete Marevich as a shooter/scorer
    Dennis Rodman as a defender/rebounder
With those twelve cats, all in their prime, no one is beating that team - ever.

You think he was tough, you don't know the half of it. Watch 5 Times Larry Bird Was Injured But Refused To Quit. You won't believe what he played through and still accomplished all he did. Watch the Larry Bird Trash Talking video, too. Wild stuff.
BTW, he played for 13 seasons, but missed all but a few games of the '89 season due to needing double Achilles surgery.
I love that look he had when he came back out after he broke his cheek. He looked ready to put the Pacers down, hard.

The only player with an argument for being a better shooter, is Steph, and that’s just from 3 really. But Larry far more clutch even from 3.

I think you should stay on Larry Bird vids for a little while longer. There's a lot to learn and I think at some point you'll leave the word white out of the description as far as best ball player. Larry Bird played the game like no one else. That parquet floor is a chess board to him and he elevated the players around him - you could not pass the way Larry did unless you had people who knew where to be. It was an amazing time to be a Celtics fan. 2008 was a good year also. Not feeling it so much anymore.

Let me tell you about the fracture he got that game: He fractured his skull so they send him to the Hospital where surgery was done and doctors drill a hole to put the bone back. He played with double vision when he got back to the game guessing all the time what of the two boards is real. And the rest you see yourself. Larry is the G.O.A.T.

Every mix tape for a hall of fame player should be reacted too.
Charles Barkley, Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, John Stockton, James Worthy, Bill Russell, Pistol Pete Marivich, Julius Erving, Moses Malone, Robert Parrish, Bernard King, Dominique Wilkins, Patrick Ewing, David Robinson, Dikembe Mutombo, Jerry West, Wilt Chamberlain, Shaquille O'Neil, Reggie Miller, Isiah Thomas, Tiny Archibald, Jack Sikma, Xavier McDaniel, Dennis Johnson, Dennis Rodman, Joe Dumars, Shawn Kemp, Scottie Pippen, Clyde Drexler, Hakeem Olajawon, Mitch Richmond, Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett, Kevin McHale, Chris Webber, Chris Mullin, Tim Hardaway, Sr., Sydney Moncrief, Gary Payton, Jason Kidd, Steve Nash, Kobe Bryant, Allen Iverson, Vince Carter, Ray Allen, Dwayne Wade and Paul Pierce.
Even some non hall of famers like Jason Williams, Spudd Webb, Mugsy Bouges, Bill Laimbeer, Vernon Maxwell, Larry Johnson, Grant Hill, Penny Hardaway, Charles Oakley, Mark Aguire and Horace Grant deserve some love with the mix tapes.
As for the Larry Bird journey, next up needs to be Making The Case - Larry Bird.
