      @@skills_hd I didnt make any claims about who would win, just saying those are not two favorite, and that their 1v1 matches are sick. I think as time has gone by Boom has proven he has more consistent results. But anyone who knows ISAI knows it isnt about winning for ISAI. There's a reason he doesnt stick with his best characters. He'll play Link and Luigi, request DK dittos, go for crazy combos just for style points... it makes a GOAT conversation very difficult, because ISAI no longer has the titles to claim that slot. But I think most fans would recognize he has something special. As it has been said, "He is the King who never claimed his throne..."
      But I definitely understand why you say Boom is better. Not even sure ISAI would disagree.

      @NateLTomBombadil  8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      +TurbinationE 64 has a lot to offer that makes it relatively simple to get involved with.
      Currently, more 64 tournaments are happening than ever before including both small weekly events throughout the country and also more recognition at international tournaments (see Smash con and Genesis). Additionally, the small community makes it easier to make friends in my opinion and even a scrub can confidently approach top players and ask for friendlies. The small community also makes traveling very easy as staying with another 64 player it totally reasonable, even if you don't know them at all.
      While it's true that the West coast suffers (although LA and Seattle still have quite sizable and growing smash communities), the North East, Chigaco, Florida (to name a few) all have big scenes. Playing online is also a great way to learn the game. Hopefully, my videos also illuminate the advanced techniques at least a bit and if you have any questions about other parts of the game, check out our Ask a Question thread: (smashboards.com/threads/ask-a-question-get-an-answer-thread-read-before-asking-a-question.237869/page-244).
      Also, since Isai registered for Genesis, that will be a good boost to our viewership I imagine. I'd like to think that 64 is getting more and more accessible as time goes by.

      I show my friends this so that they know that I'm not cheating or glitching (technically speaking) to do the moves I do. Even though things like teleport are technically a glitch they're repeatable and not a one off thing which is caused by circumstances which are hard or impossible to replicate (e.g. cartridge tilting)

The goal in making these videos is to have a standard level of knowledge for the audience of smash guides. I found up tilting harder to learn than z-cancelling, I learned to think of it like using the clutch in a car:p finding the tilt position like finding the biting point on the clutch , too little and you go nowhere(neutral), too much and you stall or take off harshly(jump). In my mind the actions require similar finesse, the first time you drive a car you likely stall a few times, once you find the bite point you can get there instinctively. Up-tilting is harder though:p you at least get sensory feedback from a car, you can feel the clutch engage or the car trying to move, with SSB, you just have to learn through trying and failing till it becomes instinct. Maybe seem strange but it helped in my head, perhaps others will have other analogies, just picture something you do that requires a similar skill and apply it to your game, you can often find the skills you need can come from the strangest of everyday tasks:P

    Very good video, it covers many of the things that people don't bother to learn when they first start and instead delve into complex advanced techniques without being able to tilt properly, lol.
    I would add a note that clarifies the difference between Brawl style buffering and what you're referring to in this video, as that has caused much confusion between me and the competitive Brawl players I've known who are first getting into 64.
    I posted this video in several Facebook smash groups I'm apart of in my local area.
    Please let me know if you're interested in other feedback, you have a really solid foundation here and clearly have editing and production skills that so many of the tutorial videos lack. I'd be happy to give my input with future installments.
    Thanks for taking the time and effort needed in this.

    Great video! I have a group of friends that play this game on a weekly basis. I just bought the game and a new controller, but the controller stick feels too sensitive to slight movements so I have trouble with my tilts. Any tips on that or should I buy or return the controller? Also, what are your thoughts on replacing the original stick with a GameCube control stick?

    • @NateLTomBombadil
      @NateLTomBombadil  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      An original controller from nintendo is generally the best solution, you can grab them on ebay or at flea markets where you live if you're lucky. Unfortunately, the other options are either decently expensive (gamecube stick, hori, etc.) or take a bit of work on your end to get them figured out (derek stick with pcb upgrade). I'm happy to elaborate further if you'd like. This is a good resource for you to peruse though: (docs.google.com/document/d/1dlC7UM9iVtghs03YzMJt0Cernsx1hSVsd16itKPx2UQ/edit)

    Wow, nice video! A lot better than the tuts I've seen. Is it possible to make yoshi's jump cancel a type of wave dash efficiently? After a certain frame, yoshi's jump boosts upward since he doesn't have an Up+B. Would it be better than full dashing with yoshi or only serve as a sort of directional defense if being pressured?

    • @NateLTomBombadil
      @NateLTomBombadil  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks a lot.
      Yoshi's DJC is mainly used for the super armor and tech chase potential because of the increased horizontal movement and ability to stall yourself in the air (to time attacks against a tech, for example). I don't think his second jump changes your movement fast enough to use a DJC just for movement alone. When you're being pressured with Yoshi, many players will spam jump for the protection offered by super armor.
      There is a technique called DJC rushing that is theoretically usable by Ness. However, I have only ever seen a few very high caliber players actually do it in real life: Tech → DJC-Rushing (720p HD)

      +Rodrigo Alvarado Kirby is the easiest character to learn to play with, Up Tilt is broken as fuck and combos into itself without much effort, even if you are bad at comboing you can just spam Up Tilt and rack at least 50% on fastfallers, then nair offstage and dair/dtilt spike edgeguard. Note that this doesn't make him the best character in the game, he's just easy to learn. And has a very good moveset to help begginers with.

    General question for any competitive smashers...I'm registering for my first tourneys and I was wondering if most high level players grease the joystick in their controllers. I only have two good quality originals and I don't want to accidentally ruin them by greasing the parts unless everyone recommends it. Very well made video by the way Nate.

    • @NateLTomBombadil
      @NateLTomBombadil  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +affattack Yeah grease is a good idea just to keep the sticks feeling good for longer. Nate, I have a really simple question and hope you don't bother answering. I've read somewhere that *in order to do an up smash* you have to first move your analog stick very quickly all the way up and THEN, right when it reaches the top notch, press A. Is this true, or can I press A before the analog stick reaches the top notch and still hit an up smash? Sometimes I can't do an up smash and I'm kind of struggling with the basics of this game.

Smash moves aren't chargeable and due to higher hitstun are extremely punishable. It's all about tapping people softly to gimp them or get them into 0 to death combos as far as I'm aware (I've played for years and have been to low level competitions, but I'm nothing like Isai or Superboomfan). Even in pro things when they use something like falcon punch or a forward smash everyone cheers or the commentators mention it as a hard read because it's such a risky thing to do as opposed to a simple spike (no meteor cancels in SSB64) or anything of the sort

      @m1ssingnote 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because Sakurai didn't thought of that idea yet,thats why he made sequels so that he can ''update'' the game,he thought that its already okay that the smash attacks wont be chargeable because its already strong enough to knock out enemies at 60% or higher.

      Is this a typo for "jab grab"? If so, remember that only four characters can jab grab: ness, pikachu, mario, and luigi. Once you're playing one of them, make sure you're standing still next to your opponent and press A and R almost at the same time, just A slightly before R. There's very little time between the two button presses

    as a Luigi main, what can I do about Fox's up air? i fight well with other characters but Fox has this stupid up air the can hit me when I'm under him?! come on! then it leads to more up airs and a kill. I am afraid to attack Fox in the air and I use a lot of air attacks with Luigi, that seems to be his best option to stay in the air. but Fox forces me to stay on the ground and only option is to attack him from the sides. I can't up smash or up tilt under him or I get hit with that up air. i basically get my butt kicked in a Luigi vs Fox match up and have to switch to yoshi and take advantage of his super armor.

    • @NateLTomBombadil
      @NateLTomBombadil  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well first off, if we're simply comparing hitboxes, Fox is far superior to Luigi. Knowing this, the question isn't, "what attack will beat Fox's uair?", but "how should I play around Fox's uair?". Your goal is not to find at attack which will allow you to stand your ground and beat Fox hitbox for hitbox. Your goal is to learn your opponent's habits and then put yourself in situations where you can punish. For example, if Fox is constantly approaching with SH uairs, don't try to beat it with a utilt. Instead, go for a pivot > dash grab or rush him before the aerial comes out and go for a quick uair of your own.
      In general, getting good at a character doesn't just mean learning abusive hitboxes and practicing some combos (although those things are important). It's all about being completely comfortable with all of your movement options and ending lag so that you can move around the map fluently. If you have complete control over your character, you can instead focus on reacting to your opponent and finding windows where you can get in without relying only on strong hitboxes. Movement is the most under-practiced and yet one of the most important parts of the game.

    • @godgirlsguitars
      @godgirlsguitars 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nate L thank you, I'll try to stand under Fox and then pivot away and dash and grab him. and I'll watch a few of isai's matches with him as Luigi or mario against a fox and see if I can see other options too.

    • @NateLTomBombadil
      @NateLTomBombadil  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll be honest with you, Isai doesn't always play "well". He's so good that he can use options which aren't ideal but uses follow-ups and tech chases so creatively that they still work. I'd recommend watching a variety of players to get a sense for what works for a more "normal" player: (vods.co/smash64?char%5B%5D=7012&event=All&top8=All). Also, Ruoka Danchon is a great Luigi player so be sure to check out his matches.

    This is sort of irrelevant to advanced techniques or to Smash even. But my brother got me a new controller, and it is hard to use. Especially compared to our old controller. It feels like someone had poorly painted the controller and it is awkward to hold. It is a new controller. Like it just came out of the box yesterday, and I was wondering how I could get used to it quickly. It really makes playing this game weird and difficult. Normally I would not mind the difficulty, but I cannot even turn around easy enough to grab someone who is behind me.

    Hey Nate, good video, it helped me a lot. What does it take for a player to be considered competitive? I mean, of course he gotta play and know the game a lot, but if we do not consider that what else does it take? On another comment i already said that I consider my self probably the highest level a casual player can get (here is some random combos footage I recorded: th-cam.com/video/bU9AMpeUSUw/w-d-xo.html of course I could've recorded real matches against someone, but sadly I have no one to play with me (and online play for me is not that accessible rn, so instead I recorded some combos I randomly created), and of course if I wanted to get to competitive levels I'd have to practice infinitely more. I have watched Isai and other players like superboomfan and I know they're at the top level of skill in SSB64. On that skill tier list in your video I think I would fit Level 3 (A). Would be nice to know your opinion on this... Thanks :-)

    • @NateLTomBombadil
      @NateLTomBombadil  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Really interesting question. First off, cool combos! Are you really playing on a phone!?
      Obviously this question can get philosophical and contentious pretty easily. Despite that, I'll answer and say: a competitive player is someone who can fluently SH, Z-cancel, and tilt and incorporates fast falling and pivots in their movement and teching and OoS options in their defense. These techniques are sort of the fundamental language of the game. Without them, you really are playing a different game (perhaps called "casual smash"). Once you are fluent with these techniques (meaning you just use them without thinking, not that you never mess them up) you can start focusing on the actual game: combos, DI, spacing, stage control, matchups, reads, baits, etc.
      My own personal experience starts similar to many, many other players: I was one of the best players I knew and thought I had mastered the game. When I lost to another casual player from a different friend group, I started researching the best players in the game and ended up getting online set up. I got absolutely blasted and had to take some time off to mentally process my shifted worldview as a result of this experience. I came out of that reflection deciding that I would get good at the game. At first, I became worse (in terms of results). This was because I wasn't get fluent with the introductory advanced techniques like SHing and z-canceling. I was spending so much mental effort trying to perform the techniques that my movement was slow and predictable and players who I would never lose to before suddenly had a chance against me. I suppose based on my definition I was neither a competitive nor a casual player at that moment. Once I mastered those advanced techniques (this took me a long time btw), I could begin actually learning the game again. I still couldn't dominate casual players even with my newly won skills. It was another significant period of time until I was focused on my opponent and their options at the same level of concentration that I used to when I was a pure casual (actually playing the game again). At this point, I believe I was a competitive player.
      Hit me up if you ever want to play online. For me, it's been the #1 most effective way for me to improve alongside going to tournaments (I say this begrudgingly due to my desire to just sit in training mode all day and level up that way). I don't know where you live but there might be some nearby online players even if there's no server.

      @@NateLTomBombadil Actually in Brazil... It's trash in here, ppl dont even know what a N64 is lol. And if if there was ppl to play, they would still have to learn the basics (Usmash, DownSmash, etc). What makes online play not accesible for me is that all servers are located on another place (out of Brazil) and that makes my inputs get too much delay (about 10 frames or so). But hey! Thanks for the answer, your probably one of the nicest guys I ever had the pleasure to meet :) Why did you stop with the videos, they were so cool!! I'm having great difficulty connecting my Up Airs into fast falls, I main Falcon, but I just can't seem to get the hang of it, I can get it every 1 out of 15 or so tries, but I need it to be consistent. Anyone know a good drill to practice or something?

    • @NateLTomBombadil
      @NateLTomBombadil  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +pieluver241 Sorry man, for some reason I'm only just seeing this now. I assume you mean you are having a hard time doing a fast fall and then uair and not uair and then fast fall. The drill I use to practice that is to start on the top platform of DL, run off it, and then fast fall so that I land in between the top and side platforms but on the ground. This is good to practice all your FF aerials this way since it's very realistic to do in a lot of matchups for Falcon. Then of course the goal is to uair without jumping. It's pretty hard at first but you'll get the hang of it. As a point of interest, Stranded (a highly technical Falcon player from the East coast), can FF uair from the side platforms!
      Here's another drill which is combo oriented as opposed to movement oriented (like the one above): Falcon on Link: usmash, uair, ff uair. Since Falcon generally does 2 upsmashes against non-floaties (DK, Link, Falcon, Fox) and then easily links it into 2 uairs (first one rising, second one falling off a single jump), doing only 1 upsmash at 0% means that you have to FF to get the second uair. Try it on the different characters I just mentioned
      Perhaps you've mastered this by now since by comment is 4 months late but maybe it will be useful to other people
