Hey not sure if someone already said this but the best option for me is to fill the socks with silica gel pellets (cat litter) and when not using it as a rest throw it in the safe with the guns to use it as dehumidifier.. multipurpose item
I put a bread bag as a liner in shot bags, crown royal bags, etc., then use whatever for filler. Flor-dri, sand, used corn cob from the tumbler, etc. Ziptie or rebar tie....
Bread bags are great. When we lived in northern MN (early ‘60s) we put on light cotton socks , then bread bags, covered with heavy wool socks in our insulated boots. The bread bags kept our perspiration from wetting the wool socks, which would kill their insulation properties. In this application it’ll keep the sand from working through the fabric. For long term use, double or triple the bread bags.
Hey WTW ! I'm dating myself , but when I was in the navy back in the 80s and 90s I and alot of my sailor buddies read the book 93 Confirmed Kills about USMC Sniper Carlos Hathcock . Carlos used to fill GI woolen socks with rice just for this purpose . Besides having a rear rest for his rifle , he had a source of field rations if needed . He would sometimes take a bit of rice from a sock and spread it about the area to his rear . Birds would light on the ground to eat the grain . Any enemy approaching his six would cause the birds to take flight , thereby alerting him that he was being trailed . Pretty Cool .
A guy at my local gun store told me to do this because there were no bags in stock. I saw this video and it helped understand what he was talking about. It works way better than any rear store bought sandbag. Thank you.
I've done that before, put under my neck. You can ever so slightly moisten the rice and get a little extra distance out of the heat, rice is cheap and mismatched socks are plenty 🙂
I've done that same thing and ended up with a bunch of insects in the rice and dust flying everywhere on each shot with my 300wm. I replaced the rice with the plastic beads they use for injection molding about 15 years ago and they are still very good for my pich bag rear gun rest
When you get done pew pew you can take that rice filled sock throw in the microwave for about 5min and then you got your self a heating sock win win multiple uses..
Got a sore shoulder from all the shooting ya do? PUT Your back bag with the rice in in the microwave 2 minutes then put on your shoulder, makes a good heating pad.
Great video. If you want a lightweight option (if you plan on taking it hunting) consider the same setup but swap rice for plastic necklace beads. My daughter uses them to make jewelry projects. Not quite as effective as rice or sand but it weighs a few ounces.
I would think that the rice would break down over time and become messy and create dust in your range bag. Look fwd to long term usage . Also it will pull moisture so it may work as a dehumidifier sock as well. Nifty idea.
My folks have rice socks that you put in the microwave with a cup of water to heat up.. So definitely a humid environment there, and they've lasted for years. So I'm not sure it'll really be much of a problem... Maybe dry black beans or popcorn would be better options than rice??

I got my shooting bags two years ago from walmart so i didn't pay no $100 for them and i got a caldwell led sled too. But if you don't have the money the socks and rice or a bag of peas will work cheaply and if your good a sewing you can make top notch sand bags i thank God i got real shooting sane bags
I used to use a sleeping bag in a stuff sack for a front rest until I forgot I was using a SBR. Muzzle blast from the flash hider put an impressive hole in the stuff sack and sleeping bag.
Whole Buckwheat would have a bit more mosture resistance, but rice works. Shorter grain would be bit better. Also, if the socks are clean, you have survival rations in your shooting bag. Just get some water boiling. 😋
Really good "make in a pinch" bag, you came up with there. We would take the legs of old denem blue jeans, cut them to size, and fill them with sand. Then tie each end off, or have one of the women in the family, that knew how to sew well, sew the ends for us. Made all sizes. They work well.
If you use longer socks or less rice instead of Sewing the fabric together just put a zip tie on the end of the sock it works great that's how I made mine because I did not have a sewing needle

Good information. Never thought about using these for a rear shooting bag. Have one but the wife made it for a heating pad. Heat in microwave for a minute or so. Will burn you if you get it to hot.,

Yea after spending a 100 bucks on 5 different bags and I used the artificial corn used to make corn hole bags. It doesn't would or swell up when wet. I used rice and didn't use for two mounths and when I opened my shooting bag in the house my wife through me and my shooting back out and said don't come back smelling like that.

Just thinking about buying a rear bag but decided to see if there was a more budget option and bam here's ht with the best budget option...I got single Socks and I have rice in the pantree , best of all I don't have to spend money on a rear rest instead I will buy another box or two of ammo...thanks ht
Plastic toy filler beads work great. They don't break down. They also don't attract moisture. And they will work the same. I built 8 different sizes for different range of shooting.
Great idea! I am going to build one of these. Most likely that Great Value brand rice came from right here in Arkansas from the Riceland plant at Stuttgart. I have done some contract work at that facility, it is huge.
Better still, if your only need to zero in, now and then, keep the rice in the sealed bag and then do the do, next get it out again and make a nice curry out of a suitable quarry! I guess sand is a better long term option, as rice will break down. Great idea, thanks for making the video.

Good idea. I said the same thing when I seen ow icy the bags were. I was like ehh I’ll make due. I usually use my fist on the But stock and my 40$ bi pod works wonders.

(brown rice to be non racist, and it's healthier right?). I locked down a big wire tie around the sock to keep the rice in place. Then rolled the top back over. I worked great. I used leather from an old, burnt set of welding sleeves. Rice spoils over time from humidity in the air. Sand doesn’t.

What happens if you leave the rice in the bag (sealed up) before you put it in the sock? It would keep it from having issues with moisture.

Don't let it get wet, or you'll have a 10 lb. Bag of soggy rice sock!
Just leave it in the bag it came in. Put that in the sock. Then adjust sock for firmness.

Use old jeans and playground sand. Playground sand is very fine and the bag will form up better.

I did the same with ripped jeans but I mixed beans, lentils, and rice.... Spent less than on just rice alone
Plus in a pinch, I can use the bags as a last-ditch ration LOL

Rice is affected by moisture. Use Airsoft 6mm BBs.

I've been saving spent primers from reloading for quite a while for no reason, just found a use for them I think.
We use older wool socks for mason jar heat protectors by cutting off the elastic tube. lol Saw the price of a leather one and decided to upcycle.

Rice works. If you want to use in the rain, maybe not. You can buy plastic pellets from craft stores or Walmart. Not as cheap as rice.
