    *SAM SPARRO on the meaning behind 'Black and Gold'* :
    "I was feeling totally lost. I was making cappuccinos when I felt I should be onstage singing. That track came from looking up to the stars and seeing myself as a tiny speck in this infinite solar-system. I wrote it in 10 minutes. It just came to me one night when I was feeling lonely and wondering if God exists''

      Hard agree. A shimmering gem amongst a whole lot of garbage. Existentialism slipped through into the mainstream pop culture because of how well written, catchy and cool the song is. Not that most people appreciated the lyrics at the time, they just tuned into the chorus and thought it was another love drama song.

      Was my song when it came out. Family put it on at gatherings knowing it was "(name's) song" Now in 2023 it makes me cry cos it reminds me of my late father. "Cos if you're not really here, then the stars don't even matter / I don't want to be either....." and I smile as I'm mixed and I see him and me as the Black and Gold. When I play it I pause it so many times as tears well up. 😪😪

    Such a beautiful song, the way it speaks of Genesis, the way darkness lives with light, the love and appreciation of seeming opposition, but speaking of the pursuit light and dark shark for each other. It reminds me of my life seeking God, the way I find the remnant of light, like fading warmth. Its there, somewhere, everywhere, not cold as some may believe, but like a sign or trail of blood that draws me.

      @@snoutysnouterson I don't think I've ever felt lyrics hit me as hard as these. I'm trying to think. I am obviously exaggerating, I must be, I must have other lyrics that have hit me harder (it's just I can't think of any rn) but I'm making a point lol. I notice many artists will always have that ONE awesome, stand-out song. And as I'm sure you agree, a song can be awesome, but, it's made a masterpiece by the lyrics. I will say, it's a shame we didn't hear more than we did from Sam Sparro, but I'm glad he dropped this song while he was so... temporary. I'm sure he's more than happy with the fact that this song was just so profoundly stunning and outstanding to many many people.

    • @snoutysnouterson

      @@lauraaa2222 I agree, I've never had lyrics from another song hit me as hard as these, marble hall's by enya is probably one of the hardest hitters, but black and gold beats it by a fair margin.
      The only part I don't agree on is that I know that no other song lyrics hit harder, haha, for me anyway.

    • @Every1luvzME
      @Every1luvzME 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No it's about God. He's saying if God isn't real then nothing else matters. And if God isn't here he doesn't wanna be here either. Sam said so in an interview

    • @snowlipsism3674
      @snowlipsism3674 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Every1luvzME I saw the interview. I honestly think the song is way more complete without having restricting it to one line of semantics, but while were at it, why would a gay man believe in God, and what's with the evolution references? Those are two things that really puzzle me. He may have said it's a bout God for his fans, so he wouldn't lose more than half his listeners.

    • @billyboreham4948
      @billyboreham4948 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the references to evolution are the argument for god not being real because if we evolved from apes then God couldn't have created us and so the rest of the bible is false meaning God isn't real, hence "if you're not even here".

    • @snowlipsism3674
      @snowlipsism3674 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Billy Boreham The fact evolution is true negates Genesis, that says all animals and living beings were created, yeah. Genesis got a lot of things wrong, including the time animals needed to evolve(a day?!), the order in which the animals formed(birds first evolved in the Jurassic period and land animals in the Carboniferous period, some 100 million years before, while the Bible puts birds and water creatures in the 4th day and land animals in the 5th - WROOOONG!). Even if the days of creation weren't literal days(which is also a position you cannot defend), the order of the events would still be patently wrong. What Sam said, if fish grew legs and got out the ocean, that's what happened, basically. All life came from the sea, to the land, then partly back into the sea, then onto the sky. All living creatures evolved from sea animals, and, if you want to be more subtle about it, because there was a huge extinction in the Permian period, most of the living beings today descend from the 4% animals that survived that extinction
