Because it feels good to help others and see people helping each other. I wish I had a coach like me when I was first started boxing. Boxing is more than a sport to me. It's a passion, an art, something my life has revolved around for years and years.
That stance is really fascinating! It is the ultimate defense if you can roll the shoulder to block any head shots & be in perfect position with the right hand to counter. Never really watched much boxing but it is incredible to see how Floyd can win through defense
The philly shell is almost the default standard on the inside. The best tip I can say is to find your opponent's punching rhythm and roll with it. Now this should already be ingrained in your natural reflex when you fight. There's no time to think in close range.
What he failed to mention was that Floyd is the master at distance deception, that's why his pull counter is so effective. His head is over his lead foot, so when he pulls back to throw the counter his head moves back into a traditional position. That's why he can throw the counter with conviction
+Austin Smarr sence you seem like a pro can you tell me why when mayweather puts his head down to dodge he dosn't throw a pucn after he dodges it? And also why when he bends down (I Dont know what its called) He never goes left and right just up and down ? please reply :)
+FizzysTV Gaming That's because that's how the Philly Shell works. He never actually moves his head unless he is ducking away. He only moves his shoulder over his chin to protect it. Another good fighter who uses depth deception is Erislandy Lara. He does the complete opposite. He leans his head back over his back foot, so when an opponent thinks he is at a safe distance he comes over with a straight left. He baits you in by thinking you are not in punching range but in reality he is right in front of you.
Austin Smarr But i dont understand what you mean in when you say move his head becouse when he ducks down his head is going down im sorry but can you show me a link of some one moving his head like in a street fight or something Im actually young and im about to start boxing im 14 and i see the philly shell affective and i think thats the style i wanna use .
This is the video. If you're too short, then use the same motions to roll under the punch. If the punch hits your shoulder it's shoulder roll. If it goes over your head, it's a roll-under.
It's usually preferred to be without weight shift because it's faster for you to "stretch & un-stretch" than to shift weight twice. As shown in the video, I perform the pull counter simply by stretching my back. And then releasing the stretched torso to come forward with the punch. My weight never really shifts throughout this move, it stays little bit more on the front foot.
The shoulder roll is definitely harder to use against tall opponents because they can just punch over your shoulder. But it still works as long as you have the timing right.
Not sure often you respond to these comments but man great job on the Dancers footwork videos. I purchased it last week, haven't had time to do all of them yet but definitely great stuff!
Many of these tactics can still be used in southpaw-orthodox situation but you would have to alter the technique a bit. The principles of deflection are the still the same but the way you go about it would change...due to the difference in foot placement and body position.
If you're going to make up your own boxing techniques, it needs to be better than the ones already out there. But you won't know that unless you learn everything first and see what works for you, what doesn't, what needs to be adjusted, etc.
Excellent analysis Johnny. Another thing I've noticed is how he uses what I call the 'dip' when he's in the Philly Shell where bends down to his right and comes up and down to avoid shots. I'd love to see you do a breakdown of James Toney offensive/defensive techniques one day. Peace
By trying to get my head behind his shoulder. This way I can attack with 2 arms whereas he only has 1. I would throw high rights and many left hooks. Another option is to make him get into fighting position, and once he starts throwing back then I would fight off of that. If his balance isn't perfect, I can push him around too.
The way you hold your hands and also you have to activate some energy for a block. You can just sit there and think that a dead hand can stop the impact to your face.
Thanks so much for all your videos Your hand wrap helped me big time It's great to hear your explanations about Floyd Techniques too Keep up the good work Merci from France

It really depends on how you see the fight and how you were trained. What's easier for one person can be harder for another. It also depends on your opponent's style. As always, styles make fights.
Excellent showing of MAYWEATHER defense techniques!there are 365 secrets of boxing!some trainers and coaches have had enough time to watch and learn a few! TMT are only using a few techniques @ each fight!all others stay in the repertory to be used @ later fights!or @teaching new students @ MAYWEATHER boxing gym!
Good stuff, let me just add, this defensive shell only really works best if you have long arms, especially that left shoulder defense. Also, Mayweather uses a lot of subtle dirty tactics, like the occasionally sneaky elbow.
I have to disagree with your comment about shaky fundamentals. Roy Jones was a great fighter. He fought at the highest levels and won! His athleticism did help but he was also a master of the game. Use of angles, clever trickery, etc. Some fighters (like myself) like to take chances when we fight in order to gamble for large payoffs. (e.g. making a wild slip in order to land a big counter). Boxing is an art and we have fun doing what we feel. It doesn't mean we have "shaky fundamentals".
Yes, Mayweather's shoulder roll is essentially the same technique as performed by James Toney. I would say James Toney was better at it so watch him if you really want to learn it.
I know you're smiling like you figured out some magical secret but no, I boxed everyday for years. Boxing's been my life for a while. I don't jump in the ring now everyday like I used to...
expertboxing mad?^^ I gave u credit for what deserves credit so making critical comments about your boxing makes u pissed to a subscriber? Kid do what ever u want.
he's moves his right hand quite a bit when he's in his shoulder roll stance, especially if there's an over hand right being fired from an orthodox fighter, that or he bends over to a 90° angle and pivots usually creating a new angle, that or he pops back up with a right upper cut or body shot.
The thing that I've always wondered is the shoulder block... You say that slip/block with shoulder and counter which I see Mayweather utilise so beautifully by the way. But how can this be so effective? What if the punches are aimed a little higher than the chin? Wouldn't they still hit you? And you often hear from corners to aim for the shoulders. Awesome channel, I appreciate your voluntary work times a billion!
Toney and Duran were masters of rolling. Remember kids leaning back like Mayweather may not work in a street fight because of the legs being exposed for take downs and being kicked. Bruce Lee recommends punching the bicep when the head of out of range.
Yes, my elbows come up when I punch. It's done for a reason and not entirely by mistake. I will say that I do exaggerate movements in my videos to help viewers see certain details better. But in general, the faster your elbow comes up, the more support and the more powerful your punch.
This is a video about Mayweather's more common defense techniques. That's what the viewers asked me to make a video on MAYWEATHER's technique and so I did exactly that. Now it just so happens that many of his techniques are old school boxing techniques. Or well...we could just say "boxing techniques". People say "old school" as if it's not taught anymore...it's still commonly taught except it's not as popular because HBO likes brawlers.
Nice vid man. Ive been working on this philly shell for some time. I love it ;) I just have a lil trouble using it against taller opponents :/. Im always on it ;)
Great video as usual, Johnny! Just asking, is the Philly Shell technique that Mayweather Jr. does as same as James Toney? If not, will you do another video about James Toney's "old school" defense technique? Thanks
Definitely, though it's worth pointing out that age slowing down their superhuman physical talent in some of those like Roy Jones was why they got caught. Their shaky fundamentals made things worse, but with their superhuman abilities they were still able to dance and dodge around without getting caught.
I imagine blocking to be far more "old school" than the philly shell. But anyway, the video was made for fans. If you want to see a certain video, you're more than welcome to make a request and I'll do it when I can. At the end of the day, I just try to deliver what people want...using the terms they use. The technique stays the same to me regardless of what you want to call it.
Mayweather has mastered this. He is faster and usually stronger than his opponent so not everyone can do this like him. Im sure he could even beat most opponents without any of these techniques. He is the best because he a master of his trade and he works for himself.
1/2 If you can, make a video of how to properly fade. I've seen allot of kids try to fade punches but then throwing the same punch, like fading a jab & following up with a jab [if it's done fast it's pretty much already blocked]. Or they would fade a jab and follow up with a right hook [orthodox should pick off jab with right hand, but a jab fade shouldn't take out the left guard which protects from right hooks]. I know these are very small things but they help.
No one can solve him because he's faster than everyone and he does things right. He has good old school defense and throws 1 punch at a time with fades included [rare today]. There have been allot of great boxers who were fast but took allot more risks and had bad defensive techniques thus they got caught. Roy Jones, Ali and several other greats had great physical talent but kept their hands too low thus took too many risks and got caught.
Most people do like brawlers. Still; the reason philly shell & shoulder roll is considered ''old school'' is because it's a pretty old technique. From what i know the newest valid boxing technique [not that Ali crap] was made by Cus'd Amato dubbed the ''peek a boo'' and even though it was made like around the 40's & 60's it's still much more recent then these 'old school' techniques you're teaching.
