I think the biggest mistake in a fight whether its boxing, MMA, or a street fight is the use of the jab. With a orthodox stance it doesnt take very long at all to master a nice flicker or stiff jab. As Bruce Lee stated in 'The Tao of Jeet Kune Do', " fear not he who practices 1000 techniques. But fear he who practices 1 technique 1000 times".. the jab is your bread and butter.
Slowin it down is no joke. When I was training I burned too fast and too bright, all anger and frustration, and it's hurt me, long term. I don't just mean it taught me bad habits, I mean I'm physically more busted up than I should be, and I did it to myself.
Top Boxing mistake for beginners: sitting around all day watching youtube videos on how to become a better boxer instead of joining a gym and training.
On the other hand, a lot of hard training people would be surprised by how much they could learn and how many recurring mistakes they could fix if they took the time to watch what experts do. Even at the gym.
Cristian Bruno Oh, definitely, videos can give good pointers and ideas to incorporate into your training. They shouldn't replace actual training, though. I wasn't as dead serious as it might have looked like, anyway. Still, something to keep in mind.
3 years ago I had my first practice (muay thai) just by watching a video on youtube, i watched so many youtube videos and listened to advices on forums etc and I only practiced at my house with my own stuff everyday, then a year later I went to a gym where they had instructors and a ring with other people training and I could beat most people that were practicing in that gym for months and years. So I guess you can learn something on your own but it is much better to have a teacher
you are raising good points here. all of them are correct, and very often seen even at long period trained boxers. I often do it slowly, fluidly and focus on the jab, flexible and quick footwork, amazingly no one can touch me or give me a big hit. Thanks for the post
vietnamese ? im half vietnamese man youre getting better and better :) 1. You look like Donaire 2. You're Vietnamese 3. You do great boxing videos that actually help. Thank you
Thus: whole body, look, slow it down to your level, go with the flow and the jab. Strange though, as on other video's one could see fights where hooks on the face were thrown and some easy jabs, while the knock out was through the body shot, thus a jab from low defence to the body and directly after that a hook to the liver or to the right side of the body, which eliminates the opponent as it is the most vulnerable spot. No bones there. You literally beat the inner body.
These are what I call "beginner mistakes". They are my version of the typical stuff beginners should know like "keep your hands up", etc. Once you turn pro you can do whatever you want. AWARENESS is absolutely important no matter what level you are. Even Aaron Pryor has to know what's coming his way. Even Mike Tyson has to know what's coming his way. Awareness allows you to defend, or for an aggressive guy, awareness allows you to see KO opportunities. These tips work for any fighter.
nice video, i been training for 4-5 months now and i noticed everything in your video is what i have been doing. Not using my whole body in punches, trying too hard too soon
been a subscriber for a while now under different accounts, your advice is professional and effective , thanks, you and JT Van V are my favorite trainers, very intelligent .
Look at the eyes! Don't focus your eyes down there, it makes it easy to see what you're going to do and you also lose sight of what they're doing next.
I really like this channel, appreciate all the work you put in to this! Thank you Johnny. Today is gonna be my first time sparring, it's really exciting! Just gotta keep it simple and basic, keep calm and stay at my level.
+expertboxing Hi, can you tell me top boxers who have made these mistakes in fights I would like to watch those fights to study? I saw studies showing great fighters weakness`s, interesting!
+expertboxing When I had fights at school I naturally punched with my whole weight, when I went to a kick box class the instructor said I wasn`t punching hard enough so I adjusted I started using my legs, stance and shoulders and punched harder but I naturally knew to do that, it just felt right the instructor didn`t give me any specific instructions, he just said punch harder. I got into a fight when I was 13 and the guy attacking me was really tough so I panicked when I hit him so I did`nt put my whole body into it but it was still neat fisted, he just said "oh yeah?" and kicked the shit out of me! This other time a Somalian guy came up behind me again I was scared so I spun around and through a half - hearted blow but he skipped out of the way! Is that because he could see me turning, I could never work it out! I would love to see a tape of it! LOL!
Yep, nice video man. One more thing, to say is that You have to be relaxed. Relaxed body, relaxed mind so You don`t have to fight with Your self when it`s time to throw a punch or any other move. If You are tensed as hell, You are doing double or even triple job with Your body and that means You get tired much faster..
Hey man, not to train too fast is a great advice!!! First learn the movement, observe what you normally do, then increase the speed and the power. You have a good attitude to become a trainer. Good luck.
Another good one to list is not returning a punch on the same plane it was delivered. For example people execute a right cross and after the punch is thrown, they tend to drop their arm leaving them open for an easy counter. Also breathing is a good one beginners forget. They tend to "hold their breath" which can cause early fatigue.
So true when beginners say "Im not fast enough" or "Im not strong enough" i use to say that, but i kept on training and so far ive ripped/tore down two boxing bags, one brand new and a used one. 120lbs & 180lbs boxing bags. Practice helps, people youve got to keep at it ;)
I am in ATL and I started boxing at 38. I do not compete, and I only do light sparing with the occasional full on stuff, but you are not too old. We are at an MMA gym, but it works. I will admit that it is better for training than fighting.
I Really love your videos man :D they make SO much sense!.. And it sounds weird, but even in "videogames" I see people don't pay attention to spacing, or walk all the way backwards, instead of doing one step back after blocking a punch..
congratulations from greece and a big.big, big THANK YOU for sharing all these great (i mean GREAT) stuff. you are like a grand sensei or master in my house. thank you again from GREECE
Take the advice to heart bro. Never close your eyes in any fight. I notice that in a lot of fighters when i used to box. People tend to close their eyes when they punch of get punched.
Great videos man, thanks a lot. I subscribed. I'm looking into learning krav maga but i wanted to check out the basics of boxing first. I gotta tell you i paid 200$ for eight hours of classes near my house and I feel like i got ripped off , I didn't learn half of what these videos showed me.
Could you make a video about whole body movment (1St mistake) I m begginer (1 month) and I have that problem (Not using whole body to punch ) How should i train that :D any more tips ?
Hi Joao. How are you? The ebooks and videos are all digital download. So you can download them directly to your computer after purchasing. There is no shipping.
Your core is weak or not activated in the punch. Use your core to send out your fist, not your elbows. You might also be having bad form/technique somewhere.
You'll have to take what you can get. Look up local amateur boxing tournaments to see where the boxers are from. If all you have is MMA gyms, you'll have to settle for that.
That anime is GOLD man, i started liking boxing when i saw it, now i practice a bit everyday. thanks to Ippo i know about Jabs, straights, Mashiba's Flicker Jab... And even tried the Dempsey Roll, quite painfull if u dont practice enough... I'd like to see this guys making the Bloody Cross xD
I learned from the advice to jab jab jab, when in doubt jab some more. I had a coach who was an ex pro kickboxer and he stressed the importance of the jab. Probably the best punch out of the 4 basic ones but cross and hook are a really close second. The jab is everything! People don't double jab enough either or practice jabs and combos from other stance. I did martial arts for years and you learned to train both sides equally.
Nice vids, thanks, true slow it down, like I always say, when we were babies if we ran before we learned to walk or stand up right we wouldn't know how to do either all we would have is bruises and scares all over our faces and knees! Good work
nice man this actually might help with my tae kwon do sparring where arms and legs are used... i might add to your point about feeling the fight : you get tired if you try to force it and you end up in the last 30 secs with no energy loosing all the points you worked for in the first 1min 30secs
I find it really difficult to keep looking at the opponent... i just have the reflex to turn my face away when a punch is coming my way. But i'll practise on it!
You don't need to really focus straight at anything. I'm no professional but I believe its better to keep awareness up and simply look forward. That way you are not distracting yourself with any specific body part, and keep an open vision on your whole opponent. If you're looking at anything specifically, it should be for openings. Anyone with better advice can butt in.
the Index and middle are the right way, if you punch with the last 2 knuckles without gloves, you are gonna break your hand. Try it softly on a hard surface so you can compare.
Im 24 years old can do 6 sets of 50 pushups in 10minutes and max bench press 235. I have knocked several people out in self defense. and feel extremely quick and powerful, however I would like to know what areas of the body to watch in order to determine when someone may strike and what arm they may use....grreat video btw
Nice videos man, i'm loving'em!! I'd like to see you performing Dempsey Roll, or any other Hajime no Ippo techniques... I know it's just an anime, but i'd like to know an expert's opinion about the movements, trainings and that stuff. Thanks in advice, and if u like anime, u won't regret of watching it!
My natural tendency is to be the patient and slow defender. That is precisely why I enjoy practicing the aggressive "puncher" style. If you golf right-handed, shouldn't it be a prudent practice to find out if left-handed is better?
i wouldnt think so its all about determination. boxers eventually reach a plateau on fitness so since your a beginner you can start improving in alot of things physically and then work more and more on technique.
Asking for clarification here, is using the jab a mistake? Or many make mistakes when using the jab?
@@robertlopez616
Many people jab incorrectly.
The jab is the main punch.
Robert Lopez jab should be your go to basically
Slowin it down is no joke. When I was training I burned too fast and too bright, all anger and frustration, and it's hurt me, long term. I don't just mean it taught me bad habits, I mean I'm physically more busted up than I should be, and I did it to myself.
... PRETTY COOL TIPS .. Specially for the eye thing .. when i throw a punch i spin my head soo truue .
hell yea man,I LOVE THE JAB.people don't realize that the jab is the staple for everything.great video!!!
Top Boxing mistake for beginners: sitting around all day watching youtube videos on how to become a better boxer instead of joining a gym and training.

Sure thing, killer :)
Azatdawn fight me
I completely agree with this. Many fighters are not shadowboxing enough. I only see pros nowadays that shadowbox beyond 15 minutes a day.
you are raising good points here. all of them are correct, and very often seen even at long period trained boxers.
I often do it slowly, fluidly and focus on the jab, flexible and quick footwork, amazingly no one can touch me or give me a big hit.

Again...great tips!! Thanks, you are so clear in explaining, this is so useful!

Bro it's safe to say your vids are some of the best out there
These advice doesn't have to apply to boxing only, it can apply to all martial arts.
wonderfully explaned
Great video. Totally agree with the speed of learning...it takes time to get the technique right.
Yep, nice video man. One more thing, to say is that You have to be relaxed. Relaxed body, relaxed mind so You don`t have to fight with Your self when it`s time to throw a punch or any other move. thank you your videos help so much
Thank you, Vix!
Thank you .. I will use my Jab more .. i tend to resort to my very good left hook to much
No, I don't do any other fighting arts. I love boxing the most because it's got the toughest people in the toughest sport.
Another good one to list is not returning a punch on the same plane it was delivered. Wow, bro everything you say here is true, from conditioning the legs to jabbing being everything, all my coaches told me this all the time
I Really love your videos man :D they make SO much sense!.. And it sounds weird, but even in "videogames" I see people don't pay attention to spacing, or walk all the way backwards, instead of doing one step back after blocking a punch..
i lol'd at you talking over the sirens. Good tips man
Haha...annoying city noises from outside the window!
congratulations from greece and a big.big, big THANK YOU for sharing all these great
(i mean GREAT) stuff. you are like a grand sensei or master in my house.
thank you again from GREECE
Very nice..that really makes sense, thanks
Thanks ;) It's a reflex to turn my head away, eyes closed, but i'm working on it
Take the advice to heart bro. Never close your eyes in any fight. I notice that in a lot of fighters when i used to box. People tend to close their eyes when they punch of get punched.
you're on the level man, you're an excellent teacher
Exactly, aim with the first 2 knuckles and not the last two.
GREAT VIDÉO CONTINUE GREAT WORK GUYS!!!!!!! THANKS A LOT
Thanks, Rami.

Nice video bro! I think you just named everything i did wrong the first time i trained lol.
Just had my first spar...I seemed to keep taking my eyes off target...exactly what you said not to do. Cheers
Very well expressed
soo true! Focusing with the eyes.

very good video! I discovered myself doing some of these mistakes! thank you!
thanx expert boxing u always help me man
True when I was in one of my matches the guy try to hook me and then I blocked and my eyes just kept looking at its in you you feel it
Not professionally, but recreationally, yes.
Hey man, my knees hurt when im boxing. What im doing wrong? Could you teach the propper footwork when u r punching?
+Mariano Martínez Check out my video on preventing leg injuries.
Nice vids, thanks, true slow it down, like I always say, when we were babies if we ran before we learned to walk or stand up right we wouldn't know how to do either all we would have is bruises and scares all over our faces and knees! Good work
I like this. I like to learn what not to do before I learn what to do for some reason. Cool shit.
It depends on who you're fighting, what skills you have, and what situation you're in.
Well you can put a little more focus on it but you need the see everything. There's no point in seeing only the chest and not the arms.
Yes! You gotta have the killer's eyes.
Smart man!
nice man this actually might help with my tae kwon do sparring where arms and legs are used... i might add to your point about feeling the fight : you get tired if you try to force it and you end up in the last 30 secs with no energy loosing all the points you worked for in the first 1min 30secs
Yeaup, that's another common way to visualize it.
Thanks a lot Chiros le! seems reasonable! i will keep it in mind!(:
thanks Johnny
Exactly!
I really like your videos they have helped me thank you
I love boxing, really, keep doing videos.
I find it really difficult to keep looking at the opponent... i just have the reflex to turn my face away when a punch is coming my way. But i'll practise on it!
I love all your videos great stuff I'm subscribed to your channel now
I started boxing in 2004.
Brilliant. Thank you. Helped me a lot !
thats true I remember when I started boxing I wouldn't look at my opponent I had to learn the hard way

Evade and counter. What else can you do?

Nice video bro. Lol i thought the cops were around my house at like 2:01
Thank you. What's another good method to see incoming punches? Thanks for the reply
Damn it man, this is excellent stuff!
Great video!
squats and deadlifts help in every combat sports... in fact they are the best compound exercises you can do, period.
+1 Super stuff. I never did any of these mistakes. Damn :D
What do you mean by control the wrist?
Stop thinking if its to late--- Sergio Martinez started at 20 and other greats have started late as well.
