l show you some bamboo l planted 3-4 years ago and tell you how l grew it. They were planted during the drought but bounced back when it started raining again
Answered lots of questions for me, thanks! The invasion of bamboo from 3 houses away has made up my mind against planting running bamboo (I like my neighbours).
i've seen what running bamboo can do and how invasive it can be, it's not easy to contain and once it gets out of control then it can be a real pest, i would never plant it myself but the choice is yours. l've seen clumping bamboo that has spread to about 5m x 8m over a 20 year period so it does spread
I bought Graceful Bamboo for privacy in my back yard. Never knew anything about bamboo except that people use it for whips. I love that you can pull down a stem that is too tall, trim it, and it will stay that height.
I tried a bamboo wall in a small section of the garden. They definitely need pruning to control the spread. You are right about a thick carpet of leaves! Leaves dropping everywhere! Such a mess!
I've been searching through many videos to find which type of compost, if any, would be most beneficial for bamboo. Thank you for posting info about Mushroom compost.
Hi Greg, very nice video. I like to look at bamboo too. I have seen one type of yellow stem with three or 4 thin dark green stripes running from top to bottom..But I still prefer to see those fresh dark green color. The stem are very good for cooking fish or chicken.
I always wanted to see black bamboo in a non-advertising shot, looks great. I was thinking about using a running bamboo for erosion control on a hill in my yard, because the hill is fairly steep, and some english ivy and a creeper are pretty much all I've got right now keeping the dirt in place, I'd like to put a grass in, and clumpers just won't cover the whole area. To be a good neighbor I'll need to install a barrier to keep the bamboo in my yard, I just cant decide on concrete or plastic.
Yes, I have the leaves in my pool too...but it's totally worth it (ten minutes of skimming and you're good to go). I love bamboo, there is no plant that equals it. Thanks for the informative video, will be planting more soon.
enjoy to look at your surroundings, bamboos and trees....nice cozy place especially summer time. (all time of course). nice air ... about the pool, that can be cleaned up, nop.
When I was young I remember we are picking mushrooms in the bamboo groves in August, Sept on rainy days, due to the leaves that decay after so many rains. And the bamboo leaves are for horses food, in green or in dry leaves. Bamboos are good plants, give coldness in the surroundings and due to height give nice air, but sounding...oooooooohhhhhhh, when it bends due to heavy wind... i get scared when i was young. Our bamboo groves is really wide that we can even have a yearly cutting for fencing.
loved this video! this garden is exactly what I want to create. I'm just wondering what varieties you have used here? I'm ready to purchase but unsure which type.
I dropped a whole bunch of bamboo leaves on the ouskirts of my fence, but it's the weed kind. Hopefully it will grow, but if not....eh. I lack the green thumbs needed to make thing grow anyway ( better at landscaping/ killing random trees). Tried too many times to "intentionally " grow these.
I’ve got a row of Timor black right down one side of my block. Looks great but it does drop heaps of leaves. U reckon watering more often would help Greggy? I’m in Brisbane.
roots are always the best, but a fresh cut stick laied down sideways in some compost and kept moist for a few weeks should work, i'll make a video about how to do it once it starts to warm up.
My problem isn't quite so much the lack of a screen, but for an extensive root network, I like the look of clumpers more, but the running kind (from what I've heard) is better at keeping soil in place. I have a hill with something close to a 30 degree decline, and it's currently covered in creeper and ivy. I have been told that a runner could be contained with plastic or concrete and vigilance during the spring/summer months while it's putting up culms. It's a fairly large yard.
I love your bamboo. Mine is nowhere near as thick as yours. Here in coastal bay area CA. What's the best way to get nice thick bamboo. What happens to smaller older shoots as it grows. Can you remove smaller shoots to encourage bigger growth? Appreciate any input. Cheers
I already use it in two of my hobbies, kite making and making radio controlled aeroplanes! When my dad was alive, he had a couple of bamboo fishing rods. h and I have bamboo blinds in my windows.
Greg the gardener!!?! What!?! Greg! I was looking up bamboo and found you!! What the heck man?!? Why didn’t I know about this other channel of yours lol. Love ya! ❤️❤️❤️
Just one problem do not plant it bye next to or close to a drain pipe it will invade a pipe clogging it or even splinting a drain pipe it will find a seam a crack and then invade it until its plugged or splitting the pipe, if planted to close to concrete it will raise it causing large cracks uneven ground its hard on side walks it can split foundations sidewalks crack pools. Bamboo needs its space and lots of it. I love the plant its hardy if you have a hill that needs to be saved due to eroation Bamboo after it gets going its as hard as concrete and can save a hill from washing away from rain storm or ocean it can save a beach front just grow bamboo in between you and the water and if you can get it rooted in it takes a lot to move it. It makes nice projects all so Fancy bird house,s boats Scalpels now you can grow your own Bicycle amazing just saw the first one on the internet amazing it looks very comfortable and stable.
The stems (culms) can be cut at any height where they have branches. They will "fluff" out at the lower height. You can lay a ladder into the clump easily. The best thing I've found for cutting poles is a battery-powered reciprocating saw with a long snaggle-toothed wood-cutting blade.
Everytime I watch your channel I swear it makes me want to visit Australia more. It's bladdy gowww-jas. Weird fact: My sister thought Bindi Sue was so cute, she named her dog after her years ago. Fun fact: I lived in Edinburgh ('91-'93) and me and my school pals were addicted to Neighbours and Home and Away like a bunch of crackheads. Hey would you mind catching me up? It's only been 20 yrs. Neeeeiighbors, everybody loves good Neeeeeiighbors dee dee dee dee dee ;p
Hey Greg, Was wondering if you could tell me some of the names of the clumping Bamboo your showing here. I trying to find some here in the USA in Tennessee and no one knows a thing about it. Thanks! Love your videos, really getting into gardening myself
I was wondering about growing bamboo as a firewood source to used in a rocket mass wood stove. Seems like it would be a great replenishing wood source. Is this right? Thanks for the great video!
I've heard horror stories about the runners as well, enough that it's stalled any intention to plant one (I want to make a bamboo maze with clumpers reflecting on their potential). I will definitely have to consider putting in a few dozen clumpers, probably a few that would make good timber and at least one edible (I like bamboo shoots). Have you ever had problems with the die-off after they flower? Fairly rare event, from what I know. Thanks for the advice by the way.
Forgive the ignorance, How LONG average would it take to grow a beautiful length of black bamboo for harvesting and building?? Thank you for your great videos! Peace!
Great video Greg. I have been thinking of getting bamboo to harvest the shoots. Is there one you think would be goods for edible shoots in a cold climate?
The bamboo Greg is showing in this video clip is Dendrocalamus var. Minor Amoneus (white Ghost Bamboo) looks great . I would plant this variety more than a metre apart. You can manage the size of your bamboo by trimming to height in the warm season.
very good :) ..mam, i have a question .. mam i live in zone 5 in pakistan/ in winters we have to face _23,, very cold place. which running bamboo is good for me to get a good profit after some years??
Hey Greg, great video. I've tried growing black bamboo from seed twice in the bag method and both times, no germination and the seeds just went mouldy really quick. Any ideas where I'm going wrong?
Hey what's up dude. Been following your videos and they are informative so thank you for that. I have a question man, I bought some bambusa lako for my back yard. I live in Miami, FL. My question is when you say mushroom compost, are you putting the compost on the top of the base, or are you putting it around the base? I'm asking because it seems the fertilizer 12-6-8 I've been using, is making the culms go smokey grey, and I want to prevent them from continuing to happen. I was told it best to use turf fertilizer, so I bought a 20-4-12 and am putting it around the base 2' about 5 days ago. seems like they aren't responding very well. what are your thoughts? thanks,
Greg - Black bamboo is chic! How long does this bamboo take to grow? I'm wondering what species of bamboo was used to torture UK soldiers by the Japanese, where the bamboo grows 1 inch every 40 minutes, which bamboo is the fast unbelievably fast growing bamboo? Thanks to your gardening tips, Greg watching you & listening i got the right tool for the garden job. Cheers!
Ive noticed something very odd with mine it grows very bushy and thick where I dumped some oyster shells and a couple aluminum cans. As if it thrives for air pockets underneath the soil.
I got some free black bamboo and have about 5 pots of it. It spreads! I couldn't pickaxe into the roots of the actual forest. I had to get the babies from about 5 feet away.
Hi Greg I live in the uk the area I live in has got a lot of limestone in the soil but it's very rich in clay but the top 3-4 inches has got ash on top from an old quarry will this affect growing anything there
yes there are. I bought mine in ebay. It's Phyllostachys Nigra (black bamboo). Hopefully it's the real black bamboo. Since it's my first time planting from seeds. Tried 30 seeds today. :D
Bamboo will grow as far north as China so there are varieties that can handle the cold as long as you your winters are not too severe. How far north are you?
I was given bamboo in a glass vase. but it is outgrown the pot .How do I keep the bamboo alive? on top of everything else I live in an apartment building and space is limited
In Florida my place has 20 foot ceilings with big sky lights. lots of natural daylight. I want to have some big bamboo inside. pot can be huge and i don't need to it look neat or clean. Problem is I'm only home one weekend a month and i keep the inside around 82F. what species our recommend? Id like to try black bamboo. Anything i can over water once a month?
that black bamboo is beautiful. do you know if it is available in the us? i frequent many plant stores, and have never seen them. we have some strict invasive species laws though... i got caught in coustoms trying to bring home some seeds i pulled off a shrub at my friends house on my last trip to Australia... steep fine
Will never tire of that accent and I also really want some black bamboo.
Kael you’re totally my type lol 😂
loosten the soil, keep it well watered and fertilised. btw i didnt know they had seeds, i've never heard of bamboo seeds.
Answered lots of questions for me, thanks! The invasion of bamboo from 3 houses away has made up my mind against planting running bamboo (I like my neighbours).
the birds tweeting in your background are lovely sound... thanks for the vid mate!

I only had a curiosity to growing bamboo but after seeing this I feel totally committed. I didn't even know black bamboo existed. It looks gorgeous.
well i'll be, just googled it and sure enough they do, once in a life time apparently, good luck :)
I tried a bamboo wall in a small section of the garden. They definitely need pruning to control the spread. You are right about a thick carpet of leaves! Leaves dropping everywhere! Such a mess!

Bamboo is pretty mulch my favorite plant. It loons nice, it's a resource and it renews itself rapidly!
as always, great honest video....keep it up Mr Greg the Gardner...YOU ARE THE BEST
thanks :)
don't get a creeping bamboo, use a clumping one then you wont need a barrier as long as you plant it 5 feet or so from the fence line
Love this black bamboo cause it's long hard and thick lovely specimen 😂
Matt Mulholland you dirty Boi!
@@Art-qy6gd technically the bamboo is the dirty one
Dammm you are fast! :)

we can cut the shoots, parboil and eat them and use the leaves on specific types for making tea.
loved this video! this garden is exactly what I want to create. I'm just wondering what varieties you have used here? I'm ready to purchase but unsure which type.
+Sarah Vaughan sorry i cant remember the ones in that garden.

Wow! clumping bamboo! I did not know. I love bamboo, but we only had the weed kind! :b
Thanks, Greg!
living in the sub tropics helps with extra plant height l guess :)
Forgive the ignorance, How LONG average would it take to grow a beautiful length of black bamboo for harvesting and building?? Thank you for your great videos! Peace!
this was an awesome video greg. I had just ordered a bunch of bamboo seeds. what are some tips you could give me for being a successful grower?
Bamboo walls are amazing.
@GregsKitchen thanks! and yeah they do. they aren't common for bamboo to drop, but I ordered I think 75 of them for about ten bucks.
What a great video!
I'm sold - bamboo it is...
lovely nice video. my bamboo garden is not like you They Climb together. how can i do to get climb together like your one?thank you!
Amazing video! What are the biggest winterhardy clumping bamboo? To around -10/-15 °C
Damn! You look great in this video (specially when you're wearing black)
That might be too cold for most bamboo but there might be some varieties that could handle up to minus 22 fahrenheit.
Great video Greg. I have been thinking of getting bamboo to harvest the shoots. Is there one you think would be goods for edible shoots in a cold climate?

Ty for vid. I'm in fl. Do u kno if bamboo can handle flooding well? It rains a lot here and the soil is nearly always saturated.
this guy's a meme star
I was just sitting down to a mushroom omelette as I started watching this! Hehe
Your winter, looks like our summer here in England :(

Hey Greg Thanks. There is an Old Song..."Number 54 House of Bamboo House with the Bamboo door" Are you an Aussie?
Ours are planted in large plastic animal troughs. No problems with breaking out. They make a wonderful natural screen.
Hi Greg..I was just gonna make some wood planters b4 i saw your video..Will the smaller species of bamboo still bust these wood planters ?
you just lye it down on the ground and it should take, these ones were in pots
I got some free black bamboo and have about 5 pots of it. It spreads! I couldn't pickaxe into the roots of the actual forest. I had to get the babies from about 5 feet away.
