    Good information. I would note that there are many bamboo varieties that are ‘clumping ‘. That means they do not spread beyond their immediate planting area and thus are self containing.

      Our nursery is in Middle Tennessee and we don't grow for warmer climates. We experimented with the mountain bamboos(Fargesias) for clumping species, and unfortunately the summer heat, even in relatively cool micro-climates was too damaging for us to offer it to the public. It goes without saying that the tropicals wouldn't survive our winters. Thank you for your comments because they are certainly applicable to some other parts of the country.

    Chris was great to work with, he showed me around his farm and was very detailed and helpful. I ended up buying the spectabilis yellow bamboo. I’m sure I’ll come back and get another variety. I was literally like a kid in a candy store and didn’t know which to pick.

    whats the best way to start a bamboo hedge of about 20' long. How many plants should I buy? How far apart planting? Or should I start with bamboo seed? What is most cost effective?

    I wonder if bamboo will grow in Reno? It snows in the winter here.

    • @BeingJohnMalkowitz
      @BeingJohnMalkowitz 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It will grow . Some bamboos can take temperatures as low as -20F . When winter comes I wrap my bamboo with a lashing strap , otherwise the snow will completely bend the bamboo to the ground

    Hi I am in SW France and have just brought a property with 60 ft high running Bamboo. I am in the process of trying to eradicate it completely as it is out of control in my very sandy soil.
    Will it die if I just cut it all down close to the ground or do I need to dig up all the rhizomes? Thanks.

    Hello.. I need seeds of bamboo used for flute making.. from where I can get it?

    • @samajax
      @samajax 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bamboos rarely flower, some types only every 50-60 years. You can find seeds on the internet, but they're not reliably fertile. Growing from seed is not a very good option for the non-professional. Many bamboo craft websites will sell you the product you need to make a flute. I'd try that rather than grow it yourself from seed.

    Thank you for the explanation. what is the depth and thickness for the golden goddess bamboo? is 18 inches depth and 60mil thickness barrier good enough to avoid the spread of this kind of bamboo?

    • @BeingJohnMalkowitz
      @BeingJohnMalkowitz 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used a 25 inches barrier . All was well in the first years , but after that the bamboo pushes itself thru the barrier . If i knew that befor I would have planted clumping bamboo , then you do not even need a barrier .

    I know I'm late to the game with question but what about "Clumping" bamboo? Are they as invasive as the "Running" bamboos?

    • @michaellee2910
      @michaellee2910 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No

    • @BeingJohnMalkowitz
      @BeingJohnMalkowitz 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No , and you do need even need a barrier . Clumping bamboo grows like a 'regular' tree or bush .But clumping bamboos do not get as high as running bamboo . Still there are type of clumping bamboo that get as high as 13 feet

  • @Bright_iiii_s

    Isn't bamboo invasive?

    • @boofarm
      @boofarm 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Annual maintenance, correctly done, will contain it nicely. We demonstrate that in several ways (and over decades) on site. If nothing else, many of our residential customers use containers of their own making (google corrugated metal planters) or simple stock watering tanks for smaller installations. commercial is typically masonry. Thank you for the question
