to all the people commenting that you wouln't put away the sofa: Then don't! I think its awesome that on a day to day basis the sofa can stay out, but if i want to do e.g. a home-workout I stilll have the option for floor space! Or have more room for the dining table when I've invited friends over. Of course you can leafe out the sofa, if that is what you like. The module is there to adapt to different needs, not to tuck everything away neatly at the end of the day.

He said that a lot is custom designed which might be a pain to replace even at scale. Also a dorm houses only students which are probably better off to trade in some flexibility for more and bigger shelf-space and a better desk rather than the awesome moveability of everything

If there's anything I've learned from living in a small studio, it's that daily tasks of moving furniture (i.e., pulling out your couch whenever you want to sit down) are just not worth it. You don't want to have to pack your apartment up at the end of the night.

Absolutely. I love the couch on wheels. But why would you want to put it in a cupboard. Keep that and have another pull out hanging rack where the cupboard was.
The roll away dining table again seems like a waste of all the cupboard space that is created under the awesome raised bed.

I have lived in a studio for many years and I have find that with a functional design you don’t have to. Personally even with a Murphy shelf I feel this design could be different. This for me has too many movements and seem very hollow and not much of a homely feeling

I think it could probably go up a few inches & not disturb the person's headspace. Idk. I think so. I love your idea of a screen for the bed space! There's so many different kinds to choose from. It could be partially see through or solidly, not see through. :) I think there would be some tall space, maybe at the end of the unit but before the bathroom door... To put a taller closet section. I can't tell for sure, but I think so. Yes, I really like this. Even as an idea for a tiny house or a very small bedroom, etcetera. :)

So this is basically dorms. I’ve noticed this type of co-living in Seattle too and it makes me worried for the future of housing. It feels like a person’s home is becoming less and less theirs and more designed to fit the most amount of people as profitably as possible. These micro studio apartments also presume that you will only use your home for sleeping, and never for living, entertaining, cooking. My concern isn’t about this building in particular, in fact I think it’s beautifully designed, just an example of a trend I’ve been noticing.

I'd never want to heat and pay extra rent/taxes for a dining room that I would use once a month and a guest bedroom that would be used two times a year. That's just wasteful. This place provides communal spaces, so you can entertain others, and you have opportunities to connect with people - which you don't have if you pay for a regular self-contained apartment, where you can have all the privacy you want, and end up with all the isolation, you didn't need.

This is sort of what I did in my small apartment with no closets. Found old wooden dining tables to make a platform for my bed; one has a drop-down leaf, it became the door to my storage crawlspace. My long dresser is underneath the bed, facing outwards so I can easily access my most needed stuff. Then I have an armoire, a settee with storage underneath, and a sturdy wooden storage trunk with shoes underneath, that acts as the step up to my bed. I have a metal rack that allows drying dishes above the sink; maximizes kitchen counter space.

the thing is... I think this solution allows you to do whatever you want... If you want the sofa to be permanent. that's not a problem, but if you want to be able to stove it away and have game night around a larger table. That's not a problem. Perhaps you will commonly eat your dinner at the small table. And that's the thing. it's about flexibility. I made my kitchenette on wheels (with safety lock). not because I move it from day to day. but If I want to do indoor exercise or play VR games I can move it away from my main area resulting in tons of space. my next step is to create a murphy bed. not because I will tuck it away everyday... but at least the possibility exists. and perhaps I will do it once or twice a week.

That's probably the best project I have ever seen here. I would probably change something (adding courtain in bed area so second person could still use rest of the flat; choose foldable table and hooks on the wall beneath TV - so you could only see table top - if green or with some form of pattern it would be like a painting, and sofa would be outside of the box: with all that I would have great storage under bed) but that's the point of design like that - you have to do them yours. That shelf-desk is pure genius for small spaces ♥

It often fails because they cut half way and realise the structure will collapse if you don't buy new materials so they turn it in to a storage cupboard for the mop/broom and put a massive mirror on the outside to help the room look bigger

Interesting thought but it has a hotel feel to it. “We didn’t design this with a specific person in mind.” That’s exactly why it doesn’t come across as an effective dwelling. All good home design should be personal.

"We didn't design this with a specific person in mind." I read this as "We can tweak things to accommodate, to suit a particular person/group as best as possible."
It is possible that someone may find this very suitable, if not close to perfect, for his/her lifestyle, or potential lifestyle. The balcony is a bonus to this tiny apartment, but appears to be able to serve well, very user friendly. And this one is in Australia. There are some balconies that are not desirable to use, or necessary, but balconies are usually desirable, or a selling point, to most people.

That’s the appeal for folks that work in one location for several months and then must move. It’s more personal than a hotel room and has the benefit of being able to personalize it by whoever is occupying it at the time. Traveling nurses would love this space, construction workers probably wouldn’t.

A clever dorm style apartment is better than an inept house/luxury big apartment. Of course, location and near-to amenities/essentials must be considered. If you live here with the tiny fridge and the closest store is a mile away or out of the way, then this can only be short term occupancy...like a hotel/motel in which case most meals are eaten out.

Now when I visit, I can't imagine what was going through my head. 😂 Green is a much better color IMO. To each their own. I am hoping they have different colored apartments though, or ppl are allowed to use temporary solutions to make the room more their own. But this place still allows more personalization than I have seen in most co-living spaces.

I agree. No one seems to make a big deal of that spacious balcony which is a big plus to the apartment, especially that it is Australia. You can do yoga on the balcony. I wonder if you can install/attach nice functional paneling on the balcony to have some privacy, since the windows across the units are rather close.

@Coni Glione yes they could actually.. infact they could even make the door disappeared and make it a wall.. people renovated their house just to move the position of their doors and take down a wall.. if they design the doors on the left side, they would have more space on the right for the kitchen

You clearly don’t know what it’s like to design in Australia, we’re mostly caught up in building laws that take an absolute nightmare of time to make small changes i.e moving a door. Also the building was mostly built already which means it’s been approved, the client most likely would not have liked to go through another approval process to “move a door.” This is an exercise in doing the best with what you have.

  • @shibolinemress8913

I don't do stairs or ladders because I have bad knees and am prone to falls, but with a chair-lift or extendable ramp for my walker instead of steps, it would be great. I'd also find a way to add a washer-dryer combo because I can't carry lots of laundry around.
Edit: On second viewing, I'm wondering if you have enough space to comfortably sit up in the bed loft. That's a game-changer for me because otherwise I'd get claustrophobic and probably bump my head every night. Also, the sofa could have a sleeper function for guests.
Edit 2: I'd also need a computer desk for working from home.

I love the idea of being able to roll the large table away when not needed and just use the small desk area from the convertible bookshelf-desk. Really opens up the space. The only thing I would change would be keeping the sofa out in the room but having it flip down (kind of like a Murphy bed) when necessary to sit on and flip back up to hide it. I think when I need to sit down on sofas I feel too tired to roll them out. For something more quick than lounging, I'd replace with a stool or seat that is in that storage area instead to pull out :) Other than that everything is perfect.
