    See how the PolarBear's pen holder works in this video.
    Still under development. The current version has some loose motion in the slide.
    It can be done perfectly with some metal rods and bearings. But my goal is to make them all 3d printable.
    You can find the STL files in this repository :

    What is the PolarBear?
    I'ts an open source multi purpose desktop cnc machine :
    3d printing
    cnc milling
    drawing
    cutting
    wood burning
    and more...

    Hey I love this project, quick question. Wouldn’t the resolution change based on how far you are from the center of the orbital axis?

      Hi, Thanks!
      Yes, You are correct. Current design have a 260mm diameter table. On the edge, the resolution is about 0.025mm in theory. It increases as you get closer to the center.

    Could you achieve both vertical motion and rotary motion using both a driven threaded rod and a driven threaded collar?

    • @kadirilkimen

      Yes. It is possible. As long as something mechanical provides the motion you want, no problem. In essence, PolarBear is a 3 axis cnc machine. So simultaneous motion is not a problem.

    question Would the z axis be better with lead screw?

    • @kadirilkimen
      @kadirilkimen  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is absolutely doable. But in this case we cannot use coreXZ setup. Then we have to put X motor on the Z axis slide. Then the total moving mass in the Z axis increases. You also need to align the screw and properly support it with the bearings. Otherwise it will cause problems or inaccuracies. The belt is much easier to setup. If you don't have heavy loads, the belt is just fine. It also makes the Z axis as fast as the X axis :) In my opinion, the screw is good if you have a heavy load. otherwise, I would prefer to go with belts. May be gt2 is not as sufficient as it should be for this project. But this is not a final consumer product and we will see how it perform and will upgrade if necessary.

    interesting idea, but what is the benefit comparing to tranditional xyz CNCs?

    • @kadirilkimen
      @kadirilkimen  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most significant benefit is smoother movements, therefore better finish parts. It can achieve higher accelerations and have small footprint on the floor. Rotary axis can draw a rectangle while rotating in one direction. A traditional cartesian machine have to change direction 4 times. To draw a rectangular, a traditional machine has to go in one direction, stop at the end, change direction, stop at the end.... all these direction changes and stops creates a lot of slowdown and speed up process, which makes the machine slow. If you make it change the direction fast, then a lot of mass has to change direction rapidly. This creates vibration and shaking effect. which reduce accuracy and creates poorer surface finish. To draw same rectangle, a polar axis don't have to stop at all and don't have to change direction. May be little slow downs and speed ups. In total, you will have smoother and faster machine.

    This is really neat. Your hold downs are great too.
