This video helped me take off with making my notes. I was able to get most of my Forex trading notes out of my head and connected and workable. This is a miracle I’m telling everyone. And sharing your videos for reference. This is exactly how my mind works
I discovered your channel yesterday. It’s probably the first time ever I’m leaving a comment on youtube but I feel like you deserve it. As soon as I discovered Zettelkasten, I searched for real life workflows/examples on youtube to really understand how it could look like, especially for litterature notes (I have a tendency to take way too many notes on a book and to highlight almost everything like someone would one day ask me my exact sources for everything I could write. Probably a byproduct of the medical school contest in France). Most of the videos are really going way too far for me with very complex setups or are just a very basic introduction. I am glad I found your channel with what looks like a simple yet efficient and balanced workflow. I am also glad to find other people interested in mental models and being polymaths. You seem very authentic in the content you produce and this becomes rare in the age of over-marketing for views and clickbait. Thank you for your work ! :)
Awww thank you for this!!! To be honest I felt the same when I first started haha so glad to meet someone who share the same journey! I’m struggling between being real and trying to get more eyeballs on these topics I deeply care about so I really appreciate you sharing how you feel about my content 🙏🙏🙏 I want to keep it real so thank you for the encouragement! See you around the channel
I feel that you are spot on about the bottom up approach. I'm considering a workflow for a completely new project, where a lot of the ideas will start as cards, but will then gradually be converted to notes. Your tutorial was the first I've seen that takes a similar approach and you explain it so clearly. Thanks.
Vicky, your channel is gold, I swear I have been watching them all night and I absolutely love the way you explain concepts, framework thinking, mind mapping, and this is the first time I've actually seen obsidian (heard of it) but now I'm definitely going to try it out. Thank you so much.
Vicky, I just found your channel a week ago. I see how you struggled with your initial videos to find direction. I want to say you are doing a great job and your work is very helpful. Frameworks and mental models were exactly what I needed in my life.
Omg. I'm freaking out. STAHM, barely any formal education due to upbringing, so no connections, I can not believe I was able to stumble upon this FREE resource! Thank you. I honestly thought the only way I'd have access is making it myself... Thank you internet!
Instant sub. I got super giddy and shrieked when you said you were getting super excited because I certainly was! Thank you for the perfect tutorial! I've been using Obsidian for a few months but was clearly sleeping on the Canvas feature. This is a game-changer. Thank you so much for the easy guide! I made this video a note and card :)
I saw something about Canvas, but thought it was just more top-down mindmapping, which I don't find helpful. My brain doesn't work that way! Canvas -- and particularly your application of Canvas is very helpful. Thanks so much for this tutorial! Vickie -- you are seriously one of my favorite TH-cam creators. Every one of your videos is incredibly helpful. (I am also a business/nonprofit consultant -- so your application to the field is really valuable). Your work on mental models and intersectional thinking is 🔥. Thanks for sharing.
This is fantastic - both for the Obsidian tutorial and for the content! Thank you from a brand new Obsidian user who’s looking forward to get all my notes, bookmarks, reading list items and images organized. As others have commented, the video is perfect - just the right amount of content and examples. ❤
You've got a new sub because of this one! Such a wonderful gift you have to help folks feel safe to dream freely and explore. Also, excellent video planning and editing.
I came here looking to see if Obsidian is good for mind mapping. Not only have you sold me on that but I may consider switching over all of my note taking and organisation to Obsidian, this is super powerful. Thanks for the video!
I just barely got familiar with Obsidian, now TH-cam throws this at me. It´s like falling down a very neatly organized rabbit hole. Thanks for this strait video, it really helps my ADHD to not have a ton of fluff around the information I seek!
Vicky I respect your efforts on how to tuts so you give us gain time what you loose to discover on your own, I really love your sharing, you are very good at expressing yourself, please keep up your wonderful channel, regards from Turkey.
I think this might be the best video you have ever made about Obsidian. One thing that was not perfectly clear is how do you quickly search your vault from the canvas to select a note you want to add. It may be self explanatory it looked like you used the far left icon at the bottom of your canvas?
Really helpful, Vicky. Thank you! As I've had time, I've been sampling a handful of canvas-style apps (Heptabase, Tinderbox, and a few lesser-known ones), though to do so, I was copying over reading notes that I'd originally made in Obsidian. But now I see that Obsidian's implementation is nearly as good as, and in a few ways better than, what these other apps can do. I especially like it that all my many links, external as well as internal, are preserved when I move notes onto a canvas. With the other canvas-style apps, I retained some links but lost others. Your video showed me a number of features (shift-2 is great!) that I hadn't known about. And your approach is systematic, enthusiastic and without any fluff.
Thank you @vicky . I found your channel few days back. Your content is really helpful to manage the my studies. I learnt lot of things about Obsidian from your channel. Thank you so much for sharing them with us.
Thank you! Exactly what i was looking for! Compare to other videos on YT about mind maping in Obsidian which seemed difficult I am really happy I found this one. 🙂 I am using Obsidian for years and didn't know about this Canvas option haha. Btw i just saved "it takes the same amount of effort to do something big as something small"
Wow! Obsidian is getting better and better, so does Vicky! Canvas it's a really nice new core plugin to Obsidian, would fit really well in a huge 49" wide monitor (not my case) :( . Lots of claps to you, Vicky, you're really up to date with that amazing app. You rock! 👏👏👏👍🙇♂
Starting with a Steve Schwarzman quote - spicy. Almost getting there on the purpose of most time management "coaching" out there, though. Don't have to wonder about what extracting as much labor value is worth to a someone who had spent all his effort exploiting people to enrich himself, they don't get as much out of getting people to self-help themselves into healthy working habits. 😊 Thanks for the video!
Thanks for showcasing this is what i want from such a note taking app. I am discovering more and more from obsidian that i absolutely love. definately gonna switch to it.
Great Job with your explanation! I started to use Obsidian last year June and I am enjoying using it daily. I will use your approach to find relations between notes using Canvas. Thank you.
Hey, I just discovered your channel, and that made the cool discovery of my day :) Also thanks for this video, I'm also new to Obsidian, it helped me seeing the great potential of this app, thanks !
Thanks. Nice tutorial. Actually excited about canvas, that was the only feature that I wanted to see added to core obsidian. For maps of content I still would prefer nicely structured lists, with hierarchies, colors and icons, because of their density. But, for exploring all the potential (!) connections - canvas way more intuitive.
Amazing set of tutorials Vicky, I greatly enjoyed each video. I've been a long time proponent and practitioner of GTD (Getting Things Done), but never really solved the "reference info" side of that system. Obsidian combined with your guidance is getting me back on track. Much appreciated. m(_ _)m
No, this one is a game changer. Shes so over my head with a lot of the Authors she quotes and I’m not exactly defunct in terms of cognitive performance. I will definitely be watching more of her videos if only for the reason of how wonderful this one was. My favorite by far !
Thank you. This was such a good lesson on the canvas and how to use it effectively. A great addition to creating excalidraw notes. Did you watch Zsolt's video yesterday on the new pens update? I have a pen tablet and can now create pressure-sensitive pens in Obsidian excalidraw. Love and light.
So you do know about Mindmaps, I would love a video about compare and contrast MindMaps vs Frameworks. Cause I would like connections between those two. The way I conceive it right now is. MindMaps is a general purpose framework.
LOVE this version of Obsidian! Can a mind map or canvas page be exported as a pdf? And is there a way to move the live website on the canvas? I find that once I drop it in the canvas I can't move, only resize Thank you for this amazing vid!!
I just started to use obsidian and i found a lot of plugings and useful tools but i'm feeling a bit overwhelming. If I have Graph View why should I use Canva? Thanks
question number 2, when you draw arrows from one note to another does it automatically create a link or backlink. If not would this be a useful feature to request that the DEVS add. Seems like it would be an easy do ?

Is there a way to paste multiple sticky notes in batch? My current knowledge is that only Excalidraw plugin can do that. At Excalidraw we can paste many lines with keywords and we get a bunch of notes that we can move easily.
It helps as a visual reference but it would be awesome if it wouldn't work just as a canvas and could work as a visual mode where the links we create actually create the references and links between them and then we can see it in the graph mode as a result.
I am confused, ı love margin note 3 due to deep link in a book to selected text, I am putting my efforts in mn3 but don't understand how to use both obsidian and mn3. I see you love reading physical books, do you know mn3? I just want to go my highlights very quickly using mn3, mn3 is very different than pdf expert, kindle ... highlighting.
Hello vicky zhao. I do the same with a7 cards: recording (analysis) chronogicaly, organising (synthesis) idees by trees ( by composing a root, train of ideas qnd branch nodes) and indexing "trains of ideas" chronologicaly and keywords pointing to those "trains" alphabetically. . Like zk, but simplified and without constrainst. This way ideas can organise organicaly. Obsidian is cool but being linked to a software is not robust enough i feel. Maybe it is usefull for team km . What s missing for me is a system to reduce information.
Canvas, it's a useful feature. But there was a problem with the cards, the letters inside were starting to look huge and I couldn't figure out how to fix it.

This turned me on to mind mapping in obsidian. Appreciated.
Great job Vicky . . . Yes more Canvas and following your thinking process. Thank you!

Absolutely loved this video! Thanks!
Got super inspired by the content of your notes :D Great video!
Excellent video, great live example of freely linked thinking.
Glad you enjoyed it! Have fun exploring :)
If I could do double thumbs, I would. It was well worth time spent watching this video. Thanks so much.
Awww thank you so much for the support and for watching :)
Is there a way to get ride of the title of the note thats greyed out?
Hi, Vicky, I wonder whether you have used Excalidraw? I am a beginner and I am not sure which one is better Canvas or Excalidraw. Thanks.
great tutorial 🙏🏼 thanks so much!!
which app do you use to record your tutorials, so you appear in this circle? tks!
wow, this is actually good
Excellent one! Thank you for this!
Thank you for watching!!

thank you that was helpful
Glad it helped! Keep me posted on how you go with Canvas!
cool tutorial! what app did you use to record the video?
Loom!
Thank you. This was such a good lesson on the canvas and how to use it effectively. A great addition to creating excalidraw notes. Did you watch Zsolt's video yesterday on the new pens update? I have a pen tablet and can now create pressure-sensitive pens in Obsidian excalidraw. Love and light.
Actually I didn't see the new pens update. I'll have to check that out! Thanks for sharing and watching!
Rather useful, ta, as mind-mapping is something I've been trying o get into for ages!
So great to hear :) enjoy exploring!
So you do know about Mindmaps, I would love a video about compare and contrast MindMaps vs Frameworks. Cause I would like connections between those two. The way I conceive it right now is. MindMaps is a general purpose framework.

Amazing ! Thank you
What do you think about shortform blinking summary books vs reading yourself? I really wonder your methods how to stay cool in knowledge raining age ?
That was really inspiring. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for watching!!
quite exciting
I just started to use obsidian and i found a lot of plugings and useful tools but i'm feeling a bit overwhelming. If I have Graph View why should I use Canva? Thanks
question number 2, when you draw arrows from one note to another does it automatically create a link or backlink. If not would this be a useful feature to request that the DEVS add. Seems like it would be an easy do ?
Здорово, благодарю за полезную информацию
Спасибо, очень помогло разобраться.
thank you!❤
Can I please ask if you can make a video on how to extract our notes from obsidian… with their links like when we are ready to put our project all together? Thanks
Hello Vicky Zhao. I want to use the Obsidian application for my engineering education. Although I tried with a clipper and a chrome md text download plugin, I couldn't do exactly what I wanted. When I uploaded the mathematics codes prepared for mathematics students into the application in md format, I saw that mathematical expressions in many subjects such as fraction lines in rational expressions, rooted numbers, exponential expressions of numbers, limits, derivatives, integrals could not occur smoothly as they appear on the site. If there is a solution that I can note all the expressions on the page in the same way, please help me. By the way, there is no copyright infringement. The information on the site is provided for our benefit.
I prefer to use this to build presentation, and use notion for my everyday personal and business dashboard.
This seems to create a super messy and disorganized mind map without any automatic alignment or grouping, so as you add or delete nodes, it becomes crazy. It's the opposite of what you want to organize and clean up your thoughts.
Hi, I'm really interested in the content of your canvas! Do you have it published anywhere? Or a video where its explained in depth? Thank you :)
I just got here and I'm confused.
I'm guessing this video has to do with creative writing?
Perhaps "mind mapping" is a technique for organizing thoughts regarding story world building?
The plugin we are excited about is "Obsidian Canvas" or perhaps just "Obsidian".
It plugs into some software which may be called "Canvas" or may have an unmentioned name.
Anyway, thanks for making the video and honestly: Keep up the good work!
Hey Patrick! Good question - the software is called Obsidian! The intro to Obsidian is probably the best place to start.
The plugin I'm excited about is Canvas, which is a core plugin in Obisidan.
And mind mapping is the technique - a tool to organize and connect your thoughts!
Hope that clears up the confusion and thank you for watching and for sharing your questions!! See you around :)
Hi, I’m looking at starting mind mapping. I’m not finding much comparative, condensed information. I don’t have time to teach myself or trial them all.
I have a wish list.
Available on all platforms, I have windows pc and iPad / iPhone
I would like to add sketches/ drawings/ photos and files to my maps
Can I make my nodes into deeper level branches with multiple layers for more complex maps (3d map)
Are there any mind maps that are able to integrate with Ai?
Can I sync my google drive?
Can I sync my email ( I use outlook)
Can I use voice to text?
I’m just getting started on this wish list, any suggestions would be appreciated. A short video of the above would be the dream
Is there a way to paste multiple sticky notes in batch? My current knowledge is that only Excalidraw plugin can do that. At Excalidraw we can paste many lines with keywords and we get a bunch of notes that we can move easily.
It helps as a visual reference but it would be awesome if it wouldn't work just as a canvas and could work as a visual mode where the links we create actually create the references and links between them and then we can see it in the graph mode as a result.
thanks vick
Thank you
helpful😁
Is there a good way to keep a “local copy” of the linked websites? In case the link breaks/content changes, etc.
How have I not been playing with the canvas this whole time?!
8:40 I want to know how your youtube link became an embeded link by default ? Is that a plugin ?
I am confused, ı love margin note 3 due to deep link in a book to selected text, I am putting my efforts in mn3 but don't understand how to use both obsidian and mn3. I see you love reading physical books, do you know mn3? I just want to go my highlights very quickly using mn3, mn3 is very different than pdf expert, kindle ... highlighting.
Genial participación !!! . . . #GuadalupeAcostaNaranjo y #Brozo
Does linking notes with the arrow in canvas create a back link in the file?
Does Notion come with Canvas as well?
Hello vicky zhao. I do the same with a7 cards: recording (analysis) chronogicaly, organising (synthesis) idees by trees ( by composing a root, train of ideas qnd branch nodes) and indexing "trains of ideas" chronologicaly and keywords pointing to those "trains" alphabetically. . Like zk, but simplified and without constrainst. This way ideas can organise organicaly. Obsidian is cool but being linked to a software is not robust enough i feel. Maybe it is usefull for team km . What s missing for me is a system to reduce information.
What's a7?
Would be really great if we could also convert an individual structured note into a mind map of it's own. Possible?
The feature seemed way too simple to be that useful when i opened it, but this makes it seem more worthwile
Canvas, it's a useful feature. But there was a problem with the cards, the letters inside were starting to look huge and I couldn't figure out how to fix it.
What happens when those web pages are not longer available?
What bothers me about canvas is that connections you make in it are not reflected in Obsidian. They are not like links or backlinks that can be managed or searched across the vault. So it feels like canvas is something foreign added to Obsidian, not fully part of the system. Does anybody has an example how they work with canvas in relation to linking system? Or perhaps a better way of managing canvas, so it's better integrated into Obsidian? I'd really appreciate some advice.
There is plugins that add connections to canvas if links exist in Obsidian. Sadly not other way around.
@@trololoev can you please name one? I'll take a look.
