How to attach a kite-line with a larkshead knot

  • My 1,442nd kite video. In flying hundreds of different kites, big and small, on thousands of occasions, I've always used a larkshead knot to attach the flying line, with not one failure. I'm often asked how to tie this knot, so here's an easy guide. Once you've used it, you will probably continue to do so - it's so simple and effective.

    Jim has helped many of us in so many ways. With knots, stacking, where to buy, and for me how to assemble a kite. I use to shy away from flying my '49 octopus because I didn't know how to perform a daisy chain. Now I can't wait to fly it without fear of goofing it up. Thanks, Jim.

      Thanks, Mark. I'm just glad the information has been useful. I found it hard to find anything when I started, so I try to pass on a bit of what I've learned since.

      @@JimNicholls Thank you again for your time and skill. I also use daisy chains for several of my larger sleds, and it works great. Also, your replies are always gracious.

    Good video Jim. Very informative. No more snaps for me. Thanks Jim!

      Very wise, Dewey. I saw one break not long ago, and it's also easy to fail to close one properly, with bad results. The larkshead is pretty well foolproof, I've found.

    Thank you, Jim. When I got into kite flying again, I saw several of your videos about the larkshead knot and have always used them since. Ha! I remember trying to tie the knot the first several times, and now I laugh at myself how easy it is--once a person knows how. Thank you again.

      I found everything hard when I started - assembling kites, tying knots, flying - but thousands of hours of experience have made things a bit easier. However, I still make mistakes, and still have more to learn.

    Hi Jim. Excellent vid. This is how I attach all my kites. If I may, here’s another quick step to your kite line loop. I tie a knot at the end so I’ll have a large loop and then a small, maybe 1/4”, loop on the end. When I make my larks-head knot and attach it to the pig-tail I have this little 1/4” loop sticking out. When it comes time to detach the kite I grab the pig-tail knot and the loop. Presto it opens up. 😮

    Do you have a video showing how to tie a loop at the end of the line?

    • @JimNicholls
      @JimNicholls  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's just a simple overhand knot - the same way I show to tie a "pigtail" in this video: th-cam.com/video/s9isfI52rOs/w-d-xo.html .

    Thanks for all your great videos Jim. Have you used this type of knot with very large line? I recently flew my Power Sled 81 for the first time with #1250 line and when I tried the larks head like normal it looked like the bridle knot was going to pull right through larkshead. I ended up making the larkshead on the bridle against the end loop on my kite line. Thanks again for all the content, I always love seeing new videos on your channel.

    • @JimNicholls
      @JimNicholls  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comment, Greg - I'm glad you enjoy the videos. I used a larkshead on my Power Sled 81 each time I flew it, with no problem (I don't have that kite any more.) Some kites have a rather small knot at the tow point (can't remember if that did) but I just tie another if I think it might need it.

    The other end, what knot do you use to tie the line to the kite wheel? Thnx.

    • @JimNicholls
      @JimNicholls  ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually just a slip knot, or a double slip knot if I want to be more sure that it's secure. I have never had one come undone.

  • @AndyBCornick
    @AndyBCornick 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the video. Do I need to tie a loop in the end of the line first? And then use this loop to create the larkshead using that? Cheers!

    • @JimNicholls
      @JimNicholls  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, correct. I find it is always the best way to attach a line, and I never use any other method.
