Living things do more than just survive. Living things strive to expand both their numbers and their ranges. To be 'fruitful and multiply'. Mere survival isn't enough for a lifeform to be truly successful. Our ancestors had a lot of selective pressure on them to adapt to new and changing environments using whatever advantages they had. Our ability to plan ahead and to create specific tools to be used over and over again allowed our ancestor species to spread throughout Africa and Eurasia, with our species then expanding to all continents except Antarctica before agriculture was even invented. But when we were finally able to record information so we could communicate over distances and time was when our species really took off, allowing us to hugely modify our environments, reach our huge numbers we have now and even experimenting in increasing our range beyond our planet's atmosphere. If we ever settle our solar system in artificial habitats, we will also need other living things to be with us, which would then make us enablers for other lifeforms to also expand their ranges beyond Earth.
