Here (Brasil) this is a very common fruit. Is called "Carambola". There is a issue: Is rich of Oxalate. And if you ingest too much you may runs renal risk (calcium oxalate crystals) or commit your kidneys !!
Before to eat this fruit, make sure if you have healthy kidneys !!
We use to cook it too !!
Cut it in slices and cook with sugar like a jam !!

Depends on where you live. Like in some countries you can just pick them from the trees which definately makes them more aromatic but some countrys get them delivered from other countrys when they are not ripe yet so there is less flavour because there is only little sun in these transports and the fruits have not completely riped

fun fact that isn't fun, almost all cultures call almost all things something different.
in fact if you listen to several spoken paragraphs in any language you'll recognize several words in "your language" because a few roots are shared.... however that's all, most languages especially once outside certain regions or old neighbors, trading partner etc etc start diverging greatly and sounding unique, look at most areas that use the same words, good chance are they're either neighbours or one previously enslaved the other or otherwise have some common ancestry.

Star fruit is so delicious. I have actually eaten it. You can find it in Canada, where I live, on rare occasions. It is citrus flavoured, like a lemon, and very juicy, with the texture of apple and pear. Crunchy and a bit grainy. The skin is a bit waxy, but edible. You can carefully peel it if you prefer. Most fruits shown here are not very attractive on the outside, but star fruit is so pretty.
