    RUSH are also 3 very silly men. Their sense of humor is legendary. All the weird stuff you see and hear is a constantly running, inside joke between the band members themselves and with the fans who keep up with them. They’ll even put little pieces of other songs into their live set to keep it fun and fresh for themselves and the fans because playing the same things for so long, you want to change it up and have fun. They are very well known for all of this, but if you aren’t a fan, you’re going to have questions. 😆 Ha! Ha!
    Don’t worry, there are plenty of RUSH geeks, (excuse me, RUSH ARMY) who will explain all of this to you. RUSH is special and so are the fans. It’s one of the coolest scenes you could ever be a part of. I have 18 tours I’ve seen in concert. Phenomenal live band! RUSH Night was special. That’s the best way to describe it. RUSH is special.

    The chicken rotisseries were just some of the crazy props they added to their stage setup when Geddy started running his bass guitar into the arena's sound system, and they needed to balance the huge stack of amps on Alex's side of the stage; other shows have featured assorted kitchen appliances, Maytag dryers, vending machines, and a popcorn popper. In Geddy's book My Effin' Life, there's a picture that describes how the rotisserie ovens produced the "hot and tasty" bass sound you heard here; if you'd like to hear the fresh, clean sound that the dryers produced, I recommend YYZ Live In Rio. Cheers from Toronto!

    I was lucky enough to see Rush once, in early 1980 on the first show of their newly released Permanent Waves album Tour which featured this song. An excellent live video choice. You seemed impressed too Xanny.😯

    Geddy regularly ran his sound through the venues sound system. Alex had his big stack of amps and speakers. To even the stage out the started with washers and dryers on Geddy's side. Then someone came up with the concept of Rotisserie Chicken ovens. So the chickens are cooking during the show, then after the show the cooked chickens were used to feed the band, crew, and roadies after each show.

    You need to see the Best Live Performance of all time
    RUSH - Xanadu - Live In Montreal 1981 (2021 HD Remaster 60fps)
    Alex Lifeson - 6 string guitar, 12 string guitar, pedal synthesizer, volume pedal;
    Geddy Lee - Vocals, bass guitar, 6 string guitar, bass pedal, taurus pedal, electric piano/synthesizer;
    Neil Peart - Lyrics, Drums, orchestra bells, tubular bells, wind chimes, crotales, timbales, timpani, gong, temple blocks, bell tree, triangle, and melodic cowbells.
    Based on Kubla Khan (Xanadu) by Samuel Taylor Coleridge Coleridge composed his poem, ‘Kubla Khan’, in a state of semi-conscious trance either in the autumn of 1797 or the spring of 1798 and published in 1816. The whole poem is pervaded by an atmosphere of dream and remains in the form of a vision. The vision embodied in Kubla Khan was inspired by the perusal of the travel book, Purchas His Pilgrimage. Coleridge had taken a dose of opium as an anodyne, and his eyes closed upon the line in the book, “At Zanadu Kubla Khan built a pleasure palace.” But this opened his creative vision, and the poem of about 200 lines was composed in this state of waking dream. On being fully awake, he wrote the poem down. The theme of the poem is unimportant. It describes the palace built by Kubla Khan, the grandson of Chengis Khan, the great rule of central Asia.

    Since your name is Xanny, you should react to "Xanadu" on the Exit Stage Left album. Love to see people listening to Rush songs for the first time. The music is beyond perfection, but the lyrics and the meaning of their songs are everything. If you go down the Rush rabbit hole (which you should-they will take you on a journey) you'll hear many people say they are the soundtrack of their lives, and it's true. They're just 3 goofy who are geniuses at their art.

    With 19 studio albums over a four decade career, there's just so much from which to choose. But since you said "time machine" I think it's only appropriate that your next reaction be to the song Working Man, played live in Cleveland around 2010 (since that was Rush's Time Machine Tour).
    Working Man was the band's first single. They secured their first international record deal on the back of its success on Cleveland's rock radio station. So, there's definitely some history there. The song was recorded with Rush's original drummer, John Rutsey, but soon after that he was replaced by Neil Peart and the rest is sweet music history.
    Four other points:
    1. The comment you read referenced the tragedies Neil had to endure in 1997-1998, which saw him lose his only daughter to a traffic accident as she headed off to college and then - less than a year later - his wife to cancer. The band was on hiatus for almost 4 years as he tried to work through his grief and rebuild his life.
    2. The G in Geddy is hard, not soft. His given name was Garry, but his Mom' Yiddish accent was so thick that, when she called him for dinner, it sounded like she was saying Geddy rather than Gary - and the new name stuck.
    3. You are so right about the depth of musical talent in Canada. In this regard, I'm wondering if you've ever heard the original version of American Woman, by the Guess Who. If not, please do yourself a favour and find yourself a live version to which you can react.
    4. I lived in Winsdor for around four years, after the turn of the century. Just curious as to whether your Windsor excursion(s) had anything do do with the drinking age in Ontario (versus Michigan)? I vaguely recall that the Michigan age was lowered at some point, or maybe not...

    If you look in front of Alex's pedal board, you'll see a bunch of Barbie dolls. That's a joke because in the early days, there were very few females in the audience.
