Move the fridge and put your old island cabinet next to the stove. Can't wait till you get a tractor!
Came here to say the same! Swap them!!
This makes so much sense! More counter top space around the stove!
Im prayin for Jasons tractor😁😁🙏🙏🙏
Switching would be nice but more expensive because you would have to a run water line to the refrigerator. However, if you do , remember you can change your refrigerator door to swing the other direction. Many people forget about that.
I agree
Hey Jason! I’m a full time custom cabinet builder and loving watching you work on your kitchen. Those upper cabinets would be great out in your shop for extra storage.
I thought the same. I would probably remove the doors first in the demo. It would have made them much lighter.
Hi guys, an idea, move the fridge away from stove and put it where you want to extend the countertop, and put that countertop where the fridge was. Give you move prep area next to stove.
Looks like at least 10 of us had same idea.
I agree
Also, less heat the fridge has to deal with.
I agree. I would either move the stove or the refrigerator. They don't need to be side by side.
If they do that the light from the window will be blocked again. And they want more light.
Move the detached cabinet to the right of the stove and move the fridge to the end of the counter next to the dishwasher. You will never regret having more work space next to the stove!
That's a great idea...counter on both sides of the stove.
Yes!
Looks great. Saving old cabinets is smart, made of real wood. ❤😁Going to be fun to watch! Thanks
One thing I noticed about houses built in the 60s, like mine, is that the plywood is actually a better grade than today's plywood. They must have loved plywood because it is everywhere!
I don't believe OSB or paricle board was available or widely available back then, so plywood it was. Also, the OSB was so junky that no one wanted to use it. It fell apart with the least amount of moisture. My husband still chooses plywood. The quality of the wood/lumber was much better also. The quality of decking available now is horrible. Our deck replaced 5 years ago is already as bad as the one torn off that was 25 years old. 😳
For sure! Lots of good plywood
I would build an island on lockable wheels. It would make it very versatile, since it is a smallish kitchen. Can't wait to see what you all end up doing! Whatever it will be beautiful!😊
It's CRAZY how just moving that peninsula to the side made the kitchen look so much bigger! You'll be able to have an amazing island there.
I stacked uppers to make a pantry. A 2x4 fits perfectly between the top and bottom so you can screw them together. Caulk the meeting points so it looks like one piece of furniture then paint. Everyone who has seen them loves them.
I love ALL Sow the Land videos!
Love how the kitchen opens up! It will be beautiful when it’s done!
Renos are always fun and exciting knowing you're making you're space new and nice
You can get new tracks & closures to go with old cabinets to cut down on the noise. Check with a local cabinet maker.
May be able to place a silicone tape under the drawers so they slide easier without a track. 🙄Did these drawers have tracks? If not, the drawers may have to be modified to include...🤔
Make that Teflon tape, not silicone tape. Sorry! Used wrong word.
Lorraine, I'm so excited for you! It's such a lovely thing to get a renovated kitchen!
Looks so much bigger already!!!! This will be fun seeing the transformation!!!
It’s going to look fantastic when you’re finished!
Great demo day, I would suggest getting recessed light where your counter tops will be it helps so much with the lighting.
Can’t have too much light in a kitchen! Counter top lamps, under counter rope lights, overhead lights, all the types !
Glad you’re saving the old cabinets. I know you’ll give them a beautiful new look.
I stacked upper cabinets 1 on top of the other and fixed them together in my pantry room. It's my apothecary and medical supplies cabinet.
There is this confidence knowing that we already saw Jason build amazing things in house and in garden and can not wait to see what are you planning to do here .
Great team work 👏 💪 ❤
Great job, you made that look easy.
Those top cabinets might be awesome editions to the barn for tools and jars of nails and whatnot.
Glad you see the value of those solid wood cupboards. This has got to go down as the neatest, cleanest demo ever on a homesteading channel. I love the open shelf concept too. I had 2 built for my lil casita
I am so stinkin' happy to see this reno finally happening! It's gonna brighten up the house so much and Lorraine is going to so enjoy having a beautiful re-done kitchen to cook in! Congrats on a job begun!
You guys are too funny when doing new things. All the screeching. Lol.( but I love that you do!) I think you had Penelope scared/worried. ❤
You guys rock. Looking forward to the renovation 😊
It is going to be fun for us subbies, isn’t it!
I am VERY excited for you and to watch this project, going to be beautiful.
All three of you work so well together ❤️❤️❤️
Love the video. I am the oldest of 8, and we were our mother's dishwasher.
😂 I'm the youngest of two, and I was the dishwasher!
Brings back memories of our kitchen remodel. Looks like a great plan.
Teamwork, I love it! Hubby picked up a cheap shop vac at Lowes for home reno's, and it has been so handy! You guy's bless me :). "Put that dishwasher tonight!!", lol. It really is a gamechanger :)))
Hi Jason and Lorraine, love what you are doing with the kitchen. One suggestion, how about putting that half of cupboard beside the stove and put the fridge by the window. Love your channel. Hi Penelope.
Well done it’s ganner look fantastic when it finished can’t wait to see it done xxx
Yeah demo day! Congratulations guy's. So excited for you guy's getting that kitchen done finally and now it can feel more home. Can't wait too see more videos for the finish kitchen...
Endless possibilities and it has only just begun. Great idea to swing that counter, opens up the kitchen and gives you more counter space.
Love open shelving! I waxed the under sliders in a rental kitchen drawers and worked well for next 8 years! Agree on saving the wood and using good old solid wood bottom cabinets! Giggles at your ‘we are renovating our kitchen!”shot! Yes, absolutely, you did great! Tasty looking dinner, love your organization skills! Looks like may be all done within week! Happy Days! ⏲️👩🍳👨🍳🔪🥘🍲☀️👏😄🤗🥰🙏❤
Used to use candle stubs or a bar of soap (dry) years ago. Drawer glides and window sashes, any wood that has to slide. It works.
Absolutely another great day on the Homestead! You all are doing an amazing job! So happy for you Lorain! Blessings Kiddos! 🌻🐛🌿💚🙏💕
Oh this is so exciting. You accomplished a lot on your first day of demo. How nice will it be to have a nice open kitchen with the island for prepping. So happy for you guys 🤩🎉
I love Reno’s, at least I do when someone else is doing them and I just watch! 😆 This was great progress and I’m looking forward to the next episode! Interesting fact, old solid wood cabinets aren’t as heavy as the fiberboard cabinets made today which made it easier for to get them down. 👌👍👏
Y’all are so inspiring! I wish I was that good with tools, well done!
Success! Looking forward to seeing your progress.
Unlike my remodel no chainsaws were involved! Going to be great when you finish!
Excited for y’all to get a new kitchen!! Lorraine will love preparing her food along with Penelope in new area. Everything is soo very expensive these days! Jason is so talented and cannot wait to see what Yall do!!❤❤😊
Wow!!! How exciting! 🎉 I’ve enjoyed watching the journey.
Great work you guys! It looks bigger already. I don't have upper cabinets and I love it. Plus it makes you only keep what you really need in the kitchen. Blessings on your day.
I used to love demoing kitchens. Bad back now. If you haven’t carried the matching uppers out yet, place them together to get a good feel for what the island will feel like. I envy you!! 🎉
You could possibly use those cabinets in your barn, or a shed. I had cabinets in my tack room and feed room that help a lot!
You all are amazing. Teamwork makes the Dream work. It is looking good. Very exciting. ❇️💞❇️
It’s going to look great
PInt the cabinets. Swap the fridge next to dishwasher and add counter next to stove.
Yes, I love the reno vids. God bless!🌱🌾
Oooh, love renovations! I can't wait to see how it turns out.
Yippy!!!!! I have been looking forward to your kitchen remodel. As a homesteader your kitchen is the heart of your home. The new layout sounds perfect and a long island. Wow! I can't wait to follow along with the remodel. 👏👏👏👏
Just thought I would add, I have all drawers in my island and it is easy to reach all my pots and pans.
How exciting. You're wife is a inspirational cook. Love the channel.
So happy for you that you are finally getting to reno the kitchen.
I moved the old kitchen cabinets down into my basement area for extra fqood storage. While not particularly attractive, they were study and a great place for mylar bags, extra pots, pans, and appliances.
I LOVE that you are reusing and making it work for you. So few people do that now and I find it sad. You inspire me with making what you have work!
You should move the fridge and switch it with the cabinet. That way you can have counter space on the side of the stove. And the fridge will still be close to everything.
What a huge difference in the feeling of space! I agree with the others who said to swap the fridge and cabinet. That makes the fridge so much more accessible, too. And maybe the island countertop can have knee space for a couple of stools. I LOVE remodels! :)
Mister Jason, I’m sure this kitchen is gonna look amazing with your skills sir!!💪🏼💨💨💨💨your a VERYYY HARD WORKER!!!!
I understand using a hard bar if soap to rub on/wax the drawers where they rub helps them run smoothly and quietly.
Jason, Suggest to continue the thin plywood over the patterned dining room floor instead of trying to rip up the kitchen floor. Good job guys! Love the channel.
So glad to see you care for the cabinets and materials you are removing. When our family updated the kitchen, the uneeded cabinets and formica counters were re-used in the workshop to expand and organize it. I'm so excited for you. I know how much you have wanted to do this renovation. Tip: when you paint the walls white, also spray paint the inside of the pantry and other enclosed cabinets. It sure improves visibility inside dark spaces. So excited to see how you refresh this whole kitchen.
I did something similar in a very dark 70s kitchen. We took the doors off and I painted the insides of the cabinets a shade of white. I used an oil-based paint for durability and wipe-ability. It was a messy and tedious job but the results were a game changer!!!
Kitchen already looks brighter. Those old cabinets will be great out in the barn. Maybe seal them against humidity.❤❤
It looks so much bigger already. Can't wait to see the finished result ❤
There is a product called TSP. It’s a wonderful degreaser and works great on older wood cabinets. It’s clear when mixed but don’t let that fool you.
I'm so excited for you guys! I know Lorraine is going to love her new kitchen!💖
How eggciting for you guys. Looking forward to seeing your new kitchen come together. I have a wooden kitchen, hand made, so glad you're keeping your original cupboards. Blessings from Australia 🌏🦘🦘
A small cabinet between the stove and the fridge would be nice, since the heat from stove makes the fridge work harder, just a thought, even an open cabinet for sheet pan storage. Can't wait to see the finished product, I can tell Lorraine is looking forward to an island which will come in handy for tomato canning.
Get some soft close hinges and self close drawer glides. You all will love them!
Can’t wait to see your kitchen progress and hopefully there won’t be too many surprises! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️👍👍👍
The cleanest, most tidy demo I have ever seen. Love the care you guys put into everything you do!
You two make me smile y’all are happy and giggles like teenagers
Consider a mobile center counter/cabinet, as contrasted with a fixed kitchen console.
Great changes👍👍 My Dads place in Nevada had the same layout. The Island was an old Long restaurant Butcher block , he turned into the Island Just like you are. Yur gonna love that Island!! Be blessed🙏🙏🙏🇺🇸🇺🇸🐓🐔🐓
Think of putting your new island on wheels. If you don't need to have electricity, wheels will really help the variety of ways you can use it.
Agree with another commenter saying put the cabs from "el" where the frig is and put the frig where you placed the cab by window. (next to dishwasher). That will give you counter next to stove.
Can't wait till next demo & Friday's podcast. ❤❤❤
We did a 60+ yr remodel to a 2 bedroom so we could down size. Large sink, waterproof wood composite floor throughout, And a dishwasher! A 20x10’ pantry/laundry/antique-knickknackDisplay room I bawled for a month while moving but have accepted the change also after 33 yrs of memories 🙏
Ive flipped lots of homes in SoCal. Id put the Fridge next to the D/W (plug already there) & the island cab next to the stove. You need countertop next to the stove. (I cant tell, but if the wall is uneven, The countertop will cover the uneven wall & you can add a small piece of wood tween cab & wall to fill the uneven space.) Paint the cabs white & paint those old hinges & pulls matte black (rustoleum spray). As you remove the hinges, number them ie nmbr the cab & zip lock with hinges: sticky on cab - #1, ziplock hinges #1, bc you want to keep the hinges with the cab they came from (new hinges can be very difficult. )I just sold a home for $600k with painted 1985 oak cabs & spray painted matte black hinges- i opted to buy matte black bar type pulls to modernize the cabs- looked great- I can send you pix if you want. Use cabinet paint bc you dont hav to sand (just wash) the old cabs & 1 coat usually works & its self leveling- can use a brush or roller & no marks! Good job you guys, this project will totally change your kitchen. PS, if you really want to jazz up the refrigerator being next to the D/W is just cut a piece of wood veryically & paint & put on the left side of the fridge, floor to ceiling (can be only 12" deep if u want) & build some shelving over the top of the fridge; paint it white to match. Moving that fridge will make a huge difference.
It's amazing how many brighter it is, just from taking down the upper cabinets. Can't wait to see how it all turns out!
That was EXCELLANT how it came out, and you can reuse it.
Lorraine will be so very BLESSED TO HAVE HER NEW IMPROVED
KITCHEN. YES. GREAT TEAM WORK.
Are you going to reuse the top cabinets elsewhere???
Inside the dishwasher, the 2 rollout shelves are usable in the barn and the silverware holder also.
Perfect timing.
They have summer sales for flooring now online.
SE MICHIGAN 🙏 🙏 🙏 🙏 🙏
Linda here…a house built in the ‘60’s more than likely has materials made of asbestos, especially flooring. Would look nice to continue the wood flooring from the other room into the entire kitchen and paint the bottom cabinets a lighter color. Just some ideas. Maybe put an island on wheels that can lock?
I was surprised at how much more light came in with just removing the light area around the window! The kitchen is going to look so much brighter with just the paint. I can’t wait til the next steps ❤
Jason, use those upper cabs on top of a kick space to build your island.
What I did to my kitchen underneath the cabinets the top ones I got I said a rope lights put them all underneath the cabinets and put them on a switch I just put a plug in underneath the Cabinet where's good at night can leave that rope light on all night and have a little bit of light in the kitchen and they're cheap to run
The Demo Team wins this round
This kitchen going to look awesome
A place well used deserves the best accommodations!! Deck it out.
Oh how exciting to get your kitchen all fixed up. Mine needs it so bad so I’ll live through your remodel and enjoy it. Have a great evening. Lisa
So exciting for you folks and can’t wait to see your new kitchen💯🌺🍍🌴✝️🇺🇸🤙🏽❤️🔥
those cabinets will be great for shop storage in the barn
We got solid birch cupboards from a school home economics room from a school that was being demolished. Fortunately, we found local carpenters that knew how to make them fit our kitchen, plus fit in a dishwasher because there wasn’t one before. It ended up costing a few thousand dollars but I have real wood cupboards that I love now. Thanks for sharing bits of your journey! It’s really exciting & inspiring! Blessings to everyone 🤗🇨🇦
That was the cleanest demo I’ve ever seen! Lorraine is on it!😊
Amazing how removing those cabinets opened up that kitchen. Can’t wait to see the progress.
Fun project! We redid our 1977 kitchen a couple years ago. We still have the dishwasher racks which we now use on processing day for drying whole chickens. Some of the cabinets were repurposed in the shed and shop. Our house also came with a ton of paneling, which we have removed or painted over. I am so excited for you. These changes will really brighten things up in your house.
When you all were processing your chicken, I was thinking to myself, When is Lorraine going to get a new kitchen! It's so exciting to see the beginning of the reno. Good luck with everything.
Hello guys, tks for video. When ya'll first sd new cabinets I thought oh no... sand and paint and keep those solid wood cabinets....so glad that you have went this way. Lorriane I see your vision of kitchen and YES Jason you can have this job done in a week, by not taking up kitchen old floors. Looking great guys , so hurry and get us another video....I can hardly wait.....
Make the door swing into the entryway space the mive the fridge into that space. Then put a small counter area to the left of the stove.
Wow, those old cabinets are quality made. I bought a 1941 house a few years ago and also took out the kitchen cabinets. They were also high quality wood cabinets. They built to last back in the day.
Awesome ! Looks like you might just have a dream kitchen in the works for you Lorraine !!! I'm so happy for you girl ❤️
