🤣 I cracked up when you brought out Battle Scars as #50. Totally agree, it's the first and only Star Wars book I just refused to finish, and it was after 7 or so chapters
Yub Nub. This is the first video from your channel I've watched. I've read/listened to very few "new canon" novels since Disney bought Lucasfilm so it was very interesting to see how you ranked them. Thank you for doing this! I've had that Solo "Last Shot" novel sitting on my shelf for years and never gotten around to reading it... alarmed to see it so low on your list, but you had positive things to say, so I'm still looking forward to reading it someday (soon!) The same goes for "Lords of the Sith." I really need to spend less time on the internet and more time reading. lol. I have the audiobook of "Catalyst" and I think I'll have to give it another listen as I was very surprised how high you ranked it. The story was good, but it didn't wow me in the same way that "Darth Plagueis" does and these are both pretty understated books imho. They certainly aren't action novels! I've never even heard of the "Master and Apprentice" novel, but I'll definitely seek it out since you like it so much. Top-tier Qui-Gon Jinn writing? Yes please! :-)
I just realized I've read 44 of these. I thought I had missed much more than that. I've read basically everything up through High Republic phase 1. Man. I'm now questioning how much of my time in college I spent procrastinating academic reading for Star Wars 🤣.
Nice vid, Jonathan. Perhaps one day you can rank the Legends books. I own 20 something but have only read the Thrawn Trilogy. Keep up the good work, mate.
Love the list, great video, perfectly said for many of the books which I’ve read and you made me excited to continue reading the high republic. One ask/suggestion I have, reread shadow of the sith, I truly loved it, plot, characters, connections, conversations, description of scenes, action and humour. Very very memorable book for me. Maybe I’m wrong but I think you’ll like it if you give it a reread, I truly feel it deserves to be top 25 at least.
I'm halfway through Catalyst so far & I completely agree with your take. Not an action packed read by any means, but definitely a fascinating novel to read if you're a a big Star Wars fan who loves tie in stories. Was also pleasantly surprised to see someone not knocking Lords of the Sith!
Perhaps an unpopular opinion but I personally I really like the Glass Abyss for making Mace Windu an actual hero with realistic flaws as opposed to Shatterpoint where he’s constantly having murderous thoughts 😂 but brilliant review, excellent commentary!
I totally agree with Temptation. I actually would’ve had it in the “didn’t enjoy” portion. Way too many loose ends and new plots added, and writing a Jedi love story in a pre-Empire Jedi order is just a fundamental misunderstanding of the order tenets.
I think The Force Awakens novelization probably suffered from a lot of the production drama around the movie where Abrams and Lucasfilm never quite had a firm plan for how things were going to go with the sequel trilogy. Same reason the Making Of book by J.W. Rinzler got unceremoniously cancelled, because it would have highlighted how much of a mess everything was around these movies. (I like the end products for the most part, but there's no doubt LF should have had a better plan going into them.)
Letting my "Yup" here. I just finish Light of the Jedi and I REALLY enjoy it. I'm wondering now if I should just go ahead and read The rising Storm or Master and Apprendice. I'm just beginning to read star wars and seeing your top really makes me happy I started with LOTJ and have MAA to follow. Great videos, I also want to speed up to get to Trials of the Jedi next year.
Without counting one by one, I’d say I’ve read about 40 of these so far, and my top canon books are Thrawn, Light of the Jedi and The Rising Storm, so I don’t have many complaints here! Also, I attended NYCC and was able to snag an advanced reader’s copy of The Mask of Fear, and it is soooo good already. And I’m saying this as someone who also really did not enjoy Freed’s non-Rogue One books, so I think you’ll quite enjoy it.
YubNub! Great vid. I've only read 7 of the adult canon novels so far, but Dooku: Jedi Lost is definitely my favorite followed by Catalyst and The Living Force

I like how we have mostly opposite tastes, but our top picks are pretty similar. You like Alexander Freed a lot more than I do, but I'm glad we both respect the Aftermath trilogy. It got way too much hate.
I just found your fantasy ranking video. I saw star wars books on shelf and thought maybe he did some recommendation video. Here it is uploaded 1 day ago 😂
Great video and list. I think the biggest differences in our lists is I would switch Aftermath and Alphabet Squadron (I felt the exact opposite in terms of authors styles although I didn’t like how the characters ended up in AS) and I’m probably the only one that just didn’t care for Master and Apprentice. It felt to me like too much of a rehash of episode 1 and some of the themes bugged me when it came to the Jedi and the Force but again that’s just me
Great list!! Love your reviews, love your honesty and passion! Quick question: where do you get those awesone plastic covers for your hardcovers? Those look like a very smart idea!
@jozefdewit7413 I have done some basic ranking videos for the EU, but not one ranking every book like I did for the canon. I’ve read about 120 of the 150 EU adult books
Me reading a new dawn my first star wars novel: "wow this is great, but I havent read a book in a long time, I hope I'm not just being bias cos i love kanan and hera" Me reading my second star wars novel: "wow this shit sucks..." (it was battle scars) Atleast the whiplash let me experience both ends of the quality spectrum
@@jonathankoan oh yeah absolutely, got a few others like dark disciple and ahsoka under my belt and been chipping away at all of phase 1 of high republic (on rising storm currently) Planning on reading catalyst/rebel rising/rouge one novalisation around the time andor season 2 drops
I honestly really enjoyed battle scars. There were so many scenes I thought were really cool, like the heist. I liked how it set seeds that every character had a different idea on how they wanted to pursue their futures which tied directly to the game. Idk I read it before the game came out and the book made me more excited🤷🏼.
If you’re talking a general top 10 books of all time, I do have that video on the channel. If you’re referring to my top 10 adult canon books, that starts at 42:42 in this video.
Loved seeing an updated video on this topic!!! I have not read nearly the number of DU (Disney Universe) books as you, but enough. I will agree that Master & Apprentice is a good read. However, I completely disagree that Claudia Gray does a better job with Qui-Gon than Jude Watson. Not even close! Jude nails that character voice. I can completely hear Liam Neeson when I read the Jedi Apprentice series. I also hated Princess & the Scoundrel. (I won't get into why, but would love to have a discussion with you on it), but I disagree it was a sweeping romance. That book was neither a romance nor a Star Wars adventure. I did enjoy Beth Revis' "Rebel Rising". I know it's a YA book but it leads me to Catalyst, which I enjoyed very much. Those two books along with the novelization of Rogue One make an enjoyable unofficial trilogy that I would recommend.
Great video! Yub Nub Do you think you'll ever rank all Star Wars books, Legends and Canon combined? That would be a long video, but would be very cool.
Most reviewers I watch to try and get a sense of how I’ll like a thing, whether by “I like what they don’t” or however. But your opinions compared to mine are so mixed and matched that I can never tell what you’re gonna say lol. I watch your reviews because they keep me on my toes, and I mean that in the best possible way 😂
Yub nub!!! And yes the first Canon Thrawn book is absolutely amazing. I want to reread it along with the other 2 canon novels here one of these days. I need to just buy them eventually. I had borrow a lot of the newer books so far from my library.
I watch all your videos and tbh you're one of the reasons I've decided I even want to make videos myself. But anyway just wanted to know what microphone you use because it seems pretty convenient in terms of size and obviously the quality is good too.
@jonathankoan do you have any tips on how to make it sound better? I've messed around with the settings and stuff but it never sounds as clear as it does in your videos
I disagree. Jude Watson's portrayal of Qui-Gon was fantastic. She gave him an entire character arc over 19 books. Really showed his journey into the Jedi Master we saw in Phantom Menace. Claudia Gray, I feel, tried to emulate the exact same Qui-Gon in TPM, but couldn't quite manage it. M&A was still good, though, but I'm surprised you liked that the best.
I definitely need to reread the Jude Watson books, as its' been about 20 years since I last read them. But Master and Apprentice was just a book that worked on all levels for me: the writing style, the existing characters, the new characters, and the mystery. The only thing I didn't love was Rael Aveross' character.
Rebel Rising is a YA book, not an adult book. This is a ranking of the adult canon novels from Del Rey and Random House Worlds. I did enjoy Rebel Rising a lot.
Question for the anyone who might know. When the original Star wars movie was in theaters there was z paperback of the story in the book stores (remember them?). But there was alternative book out where Luke and Leia were not brother and sister and told the same story more or less. Many at the time felt that this was a better story all things considered. Does anyone remember this book and is their a title that anyone remembers?
I really enjoyed the first Alphabet Squadron book, but I can't really put into words why I didn't like the sequels all that much. I guess they were just kind of hard to follow.
I agree with 99% of this list! I think your Top 2 should be reversed but that's just because I adore Timothy Zahn's writing style more than Claudia Gray. However, I completely agree with you on her connection with Qui-Gon!
There are some worth reading and some not so worth it. I do have a YA ranking video from a few years ago that talks about them. I might need to update it as well.
@@jonathankoanI’m a completist in a way lol . I don’t think I could read just the “adult “ cannon books knowing that some YA and M School ones are in the same period and even has some of the same characters .
@ I am too, I just don’t recommend the YA because I generally think they aren’t as high a quality as the adult ones. Random House has a much better track record for me than the Disney-Lucasfilm Press.
I have a separate ranking for the YA novels. But because the publisher makes the adult timeline without including the YA or Middle Grade, I thought to rank them separately. It would also increase the video length substantially. When I rank the EU I also don’t include the Middle grade books, mostly because it also would take a really long time to do.
Well you and I certainly have VERY different opinions. And I accept that but honestly you made me mad when you ditched Alphabet Squadron to the worst category saying that you don't like this kind of writing style while then putting rouge one novelisation in the best category saying how much you liked writing style in this book. Alexander Freed wrote both alphabet and rouge one, both with his specific style of writing
Of the canon books I’ve read so far Bloodline is easily the best one. Genuinely was at the edge of my seat for some moments and I almost went and bought Resistance Reborn just because a certain Bloodline character was in it. It almost makes me dislike the sequels more because there was so much potential going into them and the trilogy just fell flat imo
@@michaeljenningsyyz No. it was a novel released back in 1978. Any book published between 1976-early 2014 is Expanded Universe/Legends. Anything released mid2014-present day is the Canon.
Yup nub! Hey Jon! I heard you throw in the comment you like EU better. Would you ever delve into a comparison video comparing the overarching stories from the 2 universes and why in the end you like EU better? I personally hate the disney canon, but there have been a few pieces I truly adore; such as master and apprentice and the first 2 adult high republic books. But hot take; I'm also not a huge fan of the EU also. I think both stray and disrespect the ultimate vision of the actual author or star wars. But.....I would say I prefer EU over disney if I was going to choose a canon to follow. Love your kids, hope you respond to this with the comparison vid. Thanks!
I have made videos doing Pros and Cons of both continuities, I might do one directly comparing the two eventually. I don’t even love all of George’s ideas either, so I just view all of the officially released stuff and see what works and doesn’t. But the EU series hit better overall while I believe the canon has better standalone novels overall.
It is still a part of the canon, but it is a YA book published by the Disney-Lucasfilm press. I only ranked here the adult books from Random House Worlds and Del Rey.
Lost Stars is a Canon novel. But it is a YA book and is published by the Disney-Lucasfilm Press. But I only talked about the Adult novels from Random House Worlds and Del Rey in this ranking.
I was really hoping I wasn’t alone when it came to temptation of the force everything you said about it is how I felt too I just really don’t think romance novels should be in Star Wars half of it was great but the whole romance half was just so unentertaining
I just finished the list and I agree with pretty much everything Iv read almost all of these books maybe like 5that I didn’t read yet but now I want to cause of how high up they are on the list but is lost stars not cannon anymore? Because I absolutely loved that book and it has always been one of my favorite Star Wars books like top 10 for me if not top 5
@@grahamfloyd3451 that is something I’m trying to figure out how to fix. Unfortunately, my Demco covers for my hardcovers do produce more glare than normal though.
Couldn't stand Dark Disciple with its forced romance and surfer bro Vos. Miss the old Vos. The true Vos. Plus, everyone was out of character in that book and I loath them killing off Assaj like that. I prefer her EU fate.
Well, we categorize the books in a couple of ways, based on who the publisher is, and where the books compete on bestseller lists. The books I discussed in this video are published by Random House Worlds/Del Rey, which has the license for the adult line of Star Wars books. And when the books chart on bestseller lists, they chart in the “adult hardcover list”. The exact same is true for the Expanded Universe/Legends novels that were published before 2014, so both are considered adult. Now, there are YA and middle grade books in the canon, but they are published by the Disney-Lucasfilm Press and are categorized in the YA and Middle Grade category when they chart on bestseller lists. During the EU/Legends publishing days, the kids books were generally published by Scholastic, although a few other publishers got licensing deals as well.
Seems crazy that the movie novalisations are now to be considered non cannon supposedly, well prior to 2014, are the film episodes still cannon then 😂 not read a ton of star wars but Revenge of the Sith was superb and I remember attack of the clones adding some good stuff
It’s just the way they categorize the books. The Prequel novelizations tied more into Legends content, so Lucasfilm decided to only count novelizations from after 2014 to actually be in the canon, even though the movies are in the canon.
Force awakens, The Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker were horrible!! They spit on George Lucas and real Star Wars. Rian Johnson and JJ Abrams has no knowledge regarding Star Wars and these movies confirmed it
Star Wars adult canon? Like mature and thoughtful ones? That must mean before Disney. Unless you mean adult like adult movies. Disney's really good at those.(I know...Bad joke tell me to stop and I will) 😄Satire!

Read the ascendancy trilogy this summer, and yea, greater good is the weakest, remember the bird-watching arc ?😂
The rest of the book was amazing, though.
Lost Stars is my favorite. You’re doing a disservice by not including the YA novels!
There’s just something about his writing in Rogue One’s novelization that worked better for me than Alphabet Squadron.
Is "Splinter of the Mind's Eye" not considered canon?
@@michaeljenningsyyz No. it was a novel released back in 1978. Any book published between 1976-early 2014 is Expanded Universe/Legends. Anything released mid2014-present day is the Canon.
Canon is whatever you make it. There are different canons.
Yup nub!
But the EU series hit better overall while I believe the canon has better standalone novels overall.
is the Ahsoka book canon?
It is still a part of the canon, but it is a YA book published by the Disney-Lucasfilm press. I only ranked here the adult books from Random House Worlds and Del Rey.
Where is Luke? In all, these books?
He’s been used more in the comics than the novels.
Did I miss Lost Stars in this list? Is that not canon?
Nice! Yubnuup!
For your future success: please correct the source of glare in your future videos. Best wishes.
@@grahamfloyd3451 that is something I’m trying to figure out how to fix.
Unfortunately, my Demco covers for my hardcovers do produce more glare than normal though.
Yub Nub! I’ve read all 50. Also read all YA, Junior and comics. Aftermath is much higher on my list.
Yub nub! I agree with a lot of your list!
"Canon" doesn't mean what you think it means.
I’m simply using the term that the official liscence holders and official publishers use.
Couldn't stand Dark Disciple with its forced romance and surfer bro Vos. Miss the old Vos. The true Vos. Plus, everyone was out of character in that book and I loath them killing off Assaj like that. I prefer her EU fate.
I hated The Force Awakens and the novelization wasn't much better. The Rise of Skywalker graphic novel was better than the film and the novelization.
I’m sorry you had to read all that. Legends is adult Star Wars, not the new canon.
Loved the Aftermath trilogy even though CW is a tool.
Rian Johnson and JJ Abrams has no knowledge regarding Star Wars and these movies confirmed it
@@keithrosenthal4757 …Thankfully, I’m discussing the books in this video, not the movies. 😅

Star Wars adult canon? Like mature and thoughtful ones? That must mean before Disney. Unless you mean adult like adult movies. Disney's really good at those.(I know...Bad joke tell me to stop and I will)
