I eat well done steaks all the time, but I've never tried medium rare (thanks to parents). I decided to have a medium rare one day, and oh boy was it amazing
No, but seriously, even I, someone who used to eat only well-done meat, know better now. Well-done meat, especially steak, is just bland. The only taste you get is whatever is seasoning/basting it. Medium-rare is the way to go for most steaks you can buy or order anywhere affordable. It's got the right texture, and you can still taste the steak.

Well done steaks are extremely common. Overcooking is what they did here (i.e. burn it to charcoal). The customer had a right to complain because well done steaks are not usually that well done. The idiot chef burnt it to 'prove a point' to the customer. Lot of good that did wasn't it?
But I raise the point Gordon makes. If he was unhappy why didn't he complain at the time? They were just trying to catch him out. He just brushed him off. With a steak that thick it is darn near impossible to cook it well done on a grill without burning, if you want it well done you probably need to slow cook it until its grey in the middle then sear it both sides. No chef is going to do that for the few customers who don't know how to eat steak.

It looks charred on the outside, which is what all steak should be, but not overcooked. The reality maybe different from my opinion.

The best way to cook steak is to boll it in lukewarm water and then microwave it the next day. It locks in all of the the flavours. Serve with a dollop of ketchup to enhance the steaks creaminess and for a treat place it on top of a slice of white bread to mop up all of the juices. Perfection.

No, but seriously, even I, someone who used to eat only well-done meat, know better now. Well-done meat, especially steak, is just bland. The only taste you get is whatever is seasoning/basting it. Medium-rare is the way to go for most steaks you can buy or order anywhere affordable. It's got the right texture, and you can still taste the steak.
As a Chef, I cringe everytime is ordering a Steak or a Filet "Well done".

1. you didnt complain at the time, when you had chance to. so if you try to cry about it, thats a bit like getting stabbed, waiting to die, then going and asking god why he let him stab you.
2. you dont have the steak. if you had the steak, then gordon would have judged it himself. you cant say its "dry, overdone and tastes like rubber" when you dont have it there so gordon can confirm those points.
3. gordon didnt cook it, so he cant apologize for it. if i tripped up and bumped my head on a wet floor in an apple store, i dont go directly to steve jobs and demand an explanation as to why his floor was wet in the store, when he had no control over the situation whatsoever

The real problem here is not that the customer asked for a well-done steak. The real problem is that he wants Ramsey to judge the quality of a dish (tastewise) from a printed photograph. That is just stupid. It's like saying, "look at my soup, does that look warm to you?'. People. Are. Idiots.
If you want a well done steak you may aswell go to somewhere like McDonalds. Imagine what it is like for a chef, having a £10 piece of lovely meat and having to overcook it so it doesn't taste of anything. Whatever you do don't complain about your steak tasting like rubber, being tough and being charred, that is how you ordered it.
Well done steaks are extremely common. Overcooking is what they did here (i.e. burn it to charcoal). The customer had a right to complain because well done steaks are not usually that well done. The idiot chef burnt it to 'prove a point' to the customer. Lot of good that did wasn't it?
But I raise the point Gordon makes. If he was unhappy why didn't he complain at the time? They were just trying to catch him out. He just brushed him off. With a steak that thick it is darn near impossible to cook it well done on a grill without burning, if you want it well done you probably need to slow cook it until its grey in the middle then sear it both sides. No chef is going to do that for the few customers who don't know how to eat steak.

A customer's complain should be and assume it was in this case handled right away by calling a waiter, and have her to look at it to determine the quality of the food. You can't tell if this steak in the photo is cold, or chewy, or dry now, just by looking at a photo. To me, the steak looks okay to me. It looks charred on the outside, which is what all steak should be, but not overcooked. The reality maybe different from my opinion.
That wasn't a regular steal though, it was a filet mignon. It could handle being cooked well done and still be juicy.

The best way to cook steak is to boll it in lukewarm water and then microwave it the next day. It locks in all of the the flavours. Serve with a dollop of ketchup to enhance the steaks creaminess and for a treat place it on top of a slice of white bread to mop up all of the juices. Perfection.
