    Dee Gordon played 79 games in 2016, and made 346 plate appearances. This home run was the only one he hit that season. Across his whole career he hit 18 home runs in 4163 PAs, which averages out to 1 home run for every 231 PAs he made.
    When Jose died, it genuinely felt as though the entire baseball world had come to a standstill. You kinda had to be there. I watched this game on TV, and years later I still don’t have the words for that home run. IIRC, Dee said after the game, “if you don’t believe in god, you’d better start believing.”
    I also remember the stoic looks on the faces of a few baseball legends from that Marlins team. Their manager (Don Mattingly), their hitting coach (Barry Bonds), and their fourth outfielder (Ichiro Suzuki). You could tell just how much he meant to the game through their faces alone.

    I remember watching the pre-game ceremony that day and the first few innings. I couldn't believe it when Gordon hit that homerun as he was not a power hitter. He now goes by Dee Strange-Gordon by the way. He must be retired as he played last year for Washington and I don't see any minor league stats for this year.
    It's tragic to have such a talent pass away. He could have had a great career and help the Marlins be a better team. But to me, what's even more tragic is that drugs and alcohol were involved in that "accident". All three men on the boat had substances in their system.

    Yeah, Tommy John surgery is common nowadays. With how much harder pitchers throw today compared to the beginning of the millennium, anyone who throws a faster in the high 90s and 100mph is expected to need the surgery at some point. And in case both of you were wondering, Ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction aka Tommy John surgery is named after former MLB pitcher Tommy John who was the first player to undergo the procedure. Before the surgery, a tear of that ligament was most likely career ending. But the surgery has allowed players like Tommy John to continue playing for many years after.

    Tommy John is “not so secretly” a procedure young pitchers want.
    For the guys that are very good, they will focus on gas/spin rate till the point of this surgery.
    The weird reason is that, after this surgery, you will almost guaranteed, never get that injury again. People have even argued that post-Tommy John surgery, pitchers arms are much more durable…so they don’t have it happen mid-career when paydays are so massive.
    Also, the Dr who developed this surgery is in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

As a Mets fan, he dominated our team in almost every start and his personality, along with his talent, made him magnetic to watch. He was supposed to be the catalyst for the Marlins turn around, a Cuban star in a Cuban city that is begging to love baseball. My buddy had Tommy John surgery twice before he was 20. Had to hang up the cleats after that. If you pitch a lot as a kid,and play baseball year round, especially if you're throwing curve balls at a young age, the wear and tear will destroy you're elbow.

    Yes Tommy Johns Surgery is common for young pitchers these days. The surgery first performed in the 70ies. Over the years, the avg age of pitchers getting to surgery fell. The science got better, as did the recovery time, and that combined with pitchers throwing harder and with more spin rate, it is very common at early ages.

    Tommy John is kind of looked at as worst case scenario for pitchers, however the injury typically doesn’t discriminate by age. A friend of mine who pitches in the MLB had the surgery twice, once in high school and once in college. It’s common at a young age because that’s typically when pitchers throw their hardest, causing them to be more prone to the injury. All that said, it is not an overly common injury, just the big one all pitchers don’t want to need.

  • @ForestOfSleep
    @ForestOfSleep 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    There has been a push for pitchers to throw harder and harder. Everyone wants to throw 100 MPH and as a result pitchers league wide are having their careers shortened because of it. Pitching isn't a natural motion and when guys are abusing mechanics to throw 100 when they aren't built to throw 100 there are consequences. A lot of pitchers end up having Tommy John while still in college. There has been conversation about this over the last few years but Tommy John surgery is becoming more and more common. I'll post a video for your reaction on Discord.

    Joses case is always weird for me. He was an amazing person and lovable guy. But when you find out he was actually heavily intoxicated and was the one driving, you kinda lose a little bit of respect. Cause if he were to be alive today he'd be in jail

    There’s teenagers getting Tommy John- by product of pitching being more body straining than ever (better players). Not uncommon, some people have had it twice.

    What about the 2 guys he killed because of his poor decisions? Where's their video? I never understood why this guy gets a pass like he was some kind of hero.

    Tommy John surgery is now so common, high school pitchers now get it. So yeah, it's young and in my opinion, should not happen.
