ABOUT UPROXX INDIE MIXTAPE:
Indie Mixtape is the go-to for all things indie music. We serve as a funnel to make sure that only the best music -- new and old -- is delivered directly to the people who care the most.
Indie is more than a music genre. It's a sensibility. The indie fan may be overlooked in our current cultural climate, but they're alive and well -- going to see live music, visiting art galleries, and prioritizing substance over facade. This is for you. - เพลง
My father passed away very recently. We would play this song on the way to preschool, it's one of my most cherished memories. Love this song so much.

{{{BIG ASS HUG}}} You had such a cool Dad!!! ❤️

Omg, you are the last one i could imagine finding on here. Good to know you are into post-punk and indie rock
There's another band on the same label called 'The Upsidedown' that a lot like them.
th-cam.com/video/FakAj3Kun3g/w-d-xo.html
Rarely do you find a rock and roll tune so understated and so rhythmically and melodically pure.
I would agree. But if Almost Gold counts as rock, I would say it's even a higher grade of perfection. It is just the platonic ideal or a pop song, in my estimation.
I am still in love with them at 50! what a great band!
if you like this you might like my brother’s music. his name is Stu Morris and 'New Yellow Moon' is a good song by him.
I'm right there with ya sister happy Sunday 22 Oct. 23 be well! 🕊️
J'm 58 y.o. Italian fan for me exactly the same more than ever expecially this song is absolutely fantastic such a great band nobody and no one can beat the 80's marvellous music!!! No time and no space... simply immortal...
I purchased the.
Ir first album, dark side or something. I think it was called all. The ti know was I read about then in the music magazine. And the album was out in a month and I was hooked reading about them and then ordering their album on cassette.
Hearin you mate
I'LL NEVER FIND A WAY TO PLAY THIS AS LOUD AS I REALLY WANT TO........!
Couldn't agree more, Alex.
The Pixies did... ;)
Just play faster
Ha ha - I just jump up and down, shoe gazing of course. Still doing this, seeing them live 20 or more years later!
I know my stereo cranks it to 11. More power.
One of the best bands ever. Period.
Ever
double period lol / IMO the best band ever.Period. rofl

Still listening in 2020 👍
And still in 2021. ✊
Brent Johnson right with you
Brent Johnson then, now and forever! ❤️
Never gets old
still listening today
me too
Heard this song for the first time last month and I can't get it out of my head. Everytime I get off work I blast it on my way home with my windows down.
That snare is N A S T Y! 🥁
I bought the tape back in 1989. Automatic is one of my faves. Give the whole album a try. It's all good...
If I had to guess, I'd say it's a Roland R-8, but I've seen folks suggesting it's an Alesis HR-16 as well.
Have a listen to the Pixies version
Your so awesome!
JMC is great! Such an underrated band.
My co-worker was 26 years old (half my age at the time) and I was playing a JAMC setlist while we were setting up and said he didn't know the band. When this song played he said he hasn't heard this cover of the Pixies before. "Nope. It's the other way around," said I. Next was "Just Like Honey" and he said he knew this song from the movie "Lost In Translation" but didn't know the artist. The next song was "Sometimes Always" and he knew it, too, but didn't know the artist. Again, with "Happy When It Rains". The poor JAMC doesn't get any recognition. WTF?? Maybe the band's name puts people off?
Automatic is one of the greatest albums of all time.
Is their first album isn't bad at all
This song sounds like it could have come out last week. But it's 30 years old. Still fresh at 30.
It sounds like it came out in the 80's.
I believe this was their only mainstream hit. Jesus and the Mary Chain was largely an underground/college band back in the day. Man I miss being the 18-year old who heard this in 1990.
Jay’s Cards you’re right it became a top 2 rock radio hit
yes, if anyone was making music this good now! which they aint.
There's a handful of songs like that from the '80s and '90s. Like The Violent Femmes songs from their original self-titled album of 1983.
“And All I ever got from you, is all I ever took from you.” Best line 👌
sounds kinda rapey tho
@@Rep0007 If that’s what you hear 🤷♂️
And I'm taking myself to the dirty part of town where all my troubles can't be found.
The Jesus & Mary Chain should have been huge. The fact that they weren’t just goes to show that most people don’t know a thing about good music. Cheers to anyone still here listening in 2020. 🍻
We're here!
JMC were and still are huge (legal disclaimer: for the right folks only) .. it's chumpy Covey that ain't lettin' them state their peace just now
to be fair they didn't do themselves any favours, they were on self destruct from the start
2022 here!
2022 and of course i am listening! what else should a 67 year old listen to ?
What a great band. Scottish rock definitely deserves a good music documentary!
There's a great one about Creation Records. And Alan Mcgee
yes... but they are nobody without us the english
"AC/DC"...
For fucksake …always one
never sold out. always had their own image and sound.
FACTS. As important to underground R&R as the Velvets were. Legends of East Lothian!!!
I was 18 when this song was on radio. Very influential years and loved this time as i was learning new music sounds (new to me). Now I'm 52 and like it even more.
51 bro. I remember we lived it Gen X
48 here. I remember hearing it for the first time the summer going into my freshman year. We jammed this mfer loud as it would go!
51 I remember
This sound reminds me of the summer of 1992, I was 7 and we used to play this music on the way to the beach/waterpark/mall/wherever.
How do you prove you grew up in the best decade with the best music ever?
Pulls out this album on cassette! 😎
"The DJ never has it, JAMC AUTOMATIC"- Jimmy Eat World knew, but since I just found out about them roughly 3 years ago, I wish I had known what Jim was singing about sooner, but I'm just glad it found it's way to me.
And since this song is so timeless, no one will notice that it’s not from the decade I grew up in
I think you have to mention that before streaming became a thing, radio was in charge. Okay, you got exposed to songs you couldn't care less about, yet, you got exposed to songs you grew to love. I couldn't care less about Tool back in 1992, yet, hearing 'Sober' so much on the radio changed my mind. I've been a fan ever since. Streaming is fine, but, for the most part, it negates the listener having to hear anything that they absolutely don't want to. It's worse than the concept of 'preaching to the converted', it's more like 'the converted preaching to themselves'. The best decade with the best decade was the one where the consumer didn't control every aspect of an artist's promotion through their own teeny-tiny cell phone. People act like the internet is all-inclusive, not really. People can shut out anything they want. That isn't always a good thing.
This is the song that automatically plays in my head when riding my motorcycle.
And not The Living End from Psychocandy? :)
@@lulub7306 I see your point but I didn't choose it, it just happens.😉

ahahahaaah
I met the singer of this band, Jim Reid, backstage at one of their later shows (1998). He was exactly as expected - all quiet and weird.
Mike Benoit I have heard him articulate quite well in interviews.........yur experience is 1 reason I am happy to admire my idols from afar.....rather than see first hand that there are 2 working parts.....the creator.....and the appreciator......shall they never meet........I suppose.....if polite.....they would acquiesce=I don't need no hand me down.....I acknowledge ourmutual places on the earth and am ok w/that
Howard Paul Damned straight. I used to work security at shows and ended up declining opportunities to work backstage/dressing room or the after party. It was always the same. The room has a star in it, and 40 other people who are just thrilled to be basking in the presence of a famous person. It kinda made me cringe to see human beings acting like that.
I saw them in Chicago not long ago. Great show but the "stage presence" of the band was as it always was. At the start of the concert Reid said "hello" to the audience. At the end he said "Goodbye." That was the total extent of the showmanship, not like so many bands who have a repartee all scripted for that night. BUT ABSOLUTELY GREAT MUSIC.
Hey Mike Benoit I'm curious as to what you think you might have in common with him that would make for anything more than silly small talk? Now such small talk might be what he'd enjoy and engage in having a few beers at a bar/pub but backstage which to him is like you being at your job. How is that weird?
I met him backstage in Denver for the Munki tour. Kind and gracious. He complimented me on my strong handshake.
one of them rear and timeless things. allmost out of this world.
This was our wedding song. I've been waiting for a decent cover other than the pixes. WTF music ppl? This is freaking brilliant. This is everything.

plus five years and still the same
@@Lexluthor2024 it never gets old, I’m pretty young, I was getting into this band around 5 years ago, since then I’ve seen them 3 times live and got most of their albums on vinyl. JAMC is an amazing band!

This song was played at Yankee stadium during a rain delay July 2022, never heard it before, I am a fan now! So cool listening in a big stadium.
Shouldn't they have played Happy When it Rains? Glad you found J&MC, great thing about music - it's always waiting for you to discover it.
wow! I watch the games on TV so missed that. maybe we can trade Joey Gallo for TJ&MC
I remember right where I was standing when I saw this video on MTV. I immediately bought the cassette and proceeded to get numerous speeding tickets. JAMC just makes me put my foot to the floor. Awesome.
Yes it does. This one and REM's Orange Crush. Makes you wanna put the pedal to da metal.
I too bought this cassette after watching half of this video once on MTV!
This made me think of standing in front of the tv when Teen Spirit came on MTV for the first time. I immediately put my work transfer in to Seattle & proceeded to get my grunge on! July 2020. This song came on at a pool party, and all us 30-40 year olds sang it at the top of our lungs to try to blow the stars from the sky.

Brilliant! I love that!! 😃👍
My first live concert, in 89.
There is hope in this world! Love this!
I feel sorry for everyone that havent heard this. One of my favs
It's that riff
Thank You!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And thats not Led Zep
They were a pretty good band. Good enough to have the pixies cover this song
Sheer class....
Cheers, mate!
Reminds me of sneaking into my older brothers or both of my brrothes rooms listening to their new cds and records. Good memories. 80s rocked.
Can't get enough of this song
As soon as I get my head round you
I come around catching sparks off you
I get an electric charge from you
That second hand living it just won't do
And the way I feel tonight
I could die and I wouldn't mind
And there's something going on inside
Makes you want to feel makes you want to try
Makes you want to blow the stars from the sky
I can't stand up I can't cool down
I can't get my head off the ground
As soon as I get my head round you
I come around catching sparks off you
And all I ever got from you
Was all I ever took from you
And the world could die in pain
And I wouldn't feel no shame
And there's nothing holding me to blame
Makes you want to feel makes you want to try
Makes you want to blow the stars from the sky
I'm taking myself to the dirty part of town
Where all my troubles can't be found

Saw them open for Depeche Mode at Meadowlands Arena in the 80s. It was one of the best concerts I've been to.
Becky S. Aye well I saw them on TH-cam Ya bam :-)
can you let us know which songs jesus and mary chain played at that dm show pleas
It had to be. That should be illegal. JMC and Depeche Mode. Lucky you.
It had to be. Can't do much better than that.
So damn jealous
All time favorite song, right here.
same here!
Same
JL Perry You know, I'm going to agree also. The opening three D rumbeats puts me right back in my Mazda 323 with Automatic in the tape deck. Great memories.
Automatic has been the soundtrack of my pandemic.
Jim Reid is definitely one of my favorite vocalists. So distinct, so perfect for the band's music - which makes sense, considering he and and his brother are the creative forces behind it. Amazing singer, amazing band. 🤘🎉
Totally agree 🎸🐨
Jim and William ARE the band. There was perhaps excessive focus in this video on the drummer, to prove a point, as they were slated for not having one, and utilising a drum machine ever since they sacked off Bobby Gillespie, who of course went off to found Primal Scream. That was about four years and two albums' worth, if memory serves.
Great song. Reminds me of when I was in my 20's, different times, different dreams...a good friend introduced me to this great band. Sadly he couldn't cope with the demons that was troubling him. RIP Chris.
My favorite song of all time
God’s gift to music
I saw J&MC a few times in 80s and 90s. Initially very undisciplined, then competent, then very tight. A band that was highly rated but sadly a bit forgotten. Better than all their reviews. Love them. Psychocandy is one of the best debut albums ever.
gotta agree: psychocandy still my all time fav from J&MC, still play it, still can't beat it... bought the album almost immediately - bus straight into town to purchase it - after hearing just a couple of J&MC once on the (ISTR) now legendary John Peel radio show (for those of you to whom that means anything...)
What a novel concept. A band writes a song, plays the instruments, sings the song. Where has this gone in todays music industry.
This video is the junction of goth, grunge, surf, industrial and classic alt
Yep. agree.
You pretty much nailed it, yeah!
I loved when we all knew were weren't quite the same, but were kinda the same and so it was all good.
Nothing to do with goth but ok.
This is GOTH!!!
Dublin, Ireland, October 1989. First leg of the 'Automatic' tour. When the Mary Chain blasted through this song I realised midway through that I had tears in my eyes. Sheer joy! 😊
This song will never go away, at least in my lifetime it won't & that's just fine with me
Amen!
Well, ive just played 6 hours of darkwave , 80's metal, punk and goth. I played mary chain and my cat finally got up and listened.

Summer, 1990. Just graduated, in love and no idea where I was going, or how I would get there... life has been a trip.
So badass. There’s a reason why the Pixies covered this song on Trompe le Monde in 1991. It’s an objectively fantastic song with one of the best, most euphoric hooks ever written:
“And the way I feel tonight,
Oh I could die and I wouldn’t mind
And there’s something going on inside,
Makes you wanna feel, makes you wanna try, makes you wanna blow the stars from the sky…”
One of the best bands in the Universe!!!!! Love them!!!
This was the definition of ultra cool alternative (or college radio) music in the 80's. This song could come out today and blow me away like it did back then. The band is one of a kind and created pure magic.
This song still makes me feel things. Just as good, twenty years later.
It was more than 20
@@winendesertrose Maybe for you. I'm referencing the first time I heard it.
I love this song never knew who did it, can't stop listening to it it's like it could have been recorded yesterday love love it
Many years later and this remains fresh when compared to what's out there, whether it be good or bad contemporary music, this is definitely one of their best tracks that made them hit big.
Simple but still conquers the hearts of millions. Guitar, bass guitar, drum that's it. No need others.
I could be dying but as long as this song is playing, I'd be happy. I guess I understand how he feels when he wrote those lyrics. Amazing
I was 14 when this came out and remember playing the cassette hundreds of times.
With this album and especially this song they really hit a rich vein of music that is ageless. It sounds as good now as the 1st time i listened to it .I love the really heavy bass and drum sound in this song and the cool guitar riff that makes it rock. Im close to 50 years old and i played this song to my 19 year old son who thought it was the shit as he put it.
Closing in on 59😮 and I hear thatvrich guitar 🎸 sound and max out my car stereo singing just as loud ❤😊

@@ONCEuponAtime999 Well, I've learned about the song from them, so I will alway like their version too. TJAMC regarded it as an honour.

WELCOME ! YOU made it ! THAT'S ALL THAT MATTERS
The GREAT days when 120 minutes w/ Dave Kendall was on MTV. Always played great music and vids like this. This song was even on the 120 minutes-Never mind the mainstream- CD Vol. 2. A great buy.....

Bravo to that quote...was the real deal then.
It’s a bummer this band didn’t get the recognition in America like they should of. So underrated it’s crazy! These guys paved the way for bands like Pixies, Sonic Youth, Radiohead and The Dandy Warhols.
i saw them play in texas in 1994. good show.... i think it was 94. im old. maybe 92??
America's loss. Bummer nation? 😄
Didn’t they joint headline lollapalooza? Not like they were unknown
Don't forget the Cranberries. If familiar with April Skies. You're likely already there.
Pixies actually covered this song.Though I dont think they had that much influence. TJ&MC didnt really break in the US till around 85 around the time Pixies fwhere starting out. Though they had a completely bonkers reputation as a band for whom violence was part of the act, so maybe?
Love this tune, up beat and classic !!

Greatest band Scotland has and probably ever will produce.
Hmmm. Yeah probably. But there's tons of great Scottish musicians. Hard to say. Lots of talent
Love that William is wearing a Love shirt. Love and The Jesus and Mary Chain: two of the best, most underrated bands of all time.
"I can't stand up I can't cool down, I can't get my head off the ground." Fantastic!
One of my favorite JMC albums. Still have the one I bought in 1989!
maybe NOT the most original, and maybe gets old towards the end, but 50's pop?!?! pedal on fuzz.
dude who cares if it's original just let him enjoy the music
I am letting him enjoy the music and I bought it in '89 too ~ and I love it! that was my whole point!
Sorry I meant to address Andy
I first heard JAMC on 120 minutes on MTV in 89 and immediately went out and purchased the tape cassette. I still think it's their best album next to PyschoCandy.
The jesus and mary chain - one of the greatest bands
I saw them in Chicago during this time, at the Riviera I believe. Either late 89 or early 90.. I can't remember exactly but I do remember that it's still one of my favorite concerts of all-time 👍
Even after all these years they are the icons of cool. Had a huge crush on Jim when i was 15.
Like a lot of folks, this was the song I came in on as a fan. "And the world could die in pain and I wouldn't feel no shame" is where they had me. Great album start to finish. Still listen to it a lot all these years later.
This band has the best guitar rifts ever.
I remember my mom buying me a The Jesus And The Mary Chain t-shirt for me at a record store when I was in Jr. High back in the early 90's and I wore it with my black flight jacket , vintage denim and Doc Martin's. To be an alternative punk kid was the greatest!
By far one of my favorite bands … right up there with the Smashing Pumpkins.
The drummer stares at the hi-hat the same way I look at 70's Debbie Harry.

I bet you're both using the same bpm lol
I am grateful that my brother introduced me to this band and this song in particular!
omg what a good song, I graduated from HS in 89 and somehow I have never heard this song until TODAY
I found them about 3 years ago, and as an musician and music listener, their catalogue has been the best find of my 30's, with Fountains of Wayne being a close second, those dude's aren't just "Stacy's Mom"- they are debatably the best American Band ever. Check out their stuff too if you're not hip
Just another slice of gold from the Killbride boys. This song never gets old. The Reid brothers know how to keep it lean and mean. I do wish they would have employed a drummer on this album. The drum machine simply isn’t what they are about. The drummer in the video is just for the video...
East Kilbride my hometown. They were just a couple of years older than me.
My volume button doesn't seem to go high enough...
Love this Song 🖤
