    I was diagnosed August 2020. Like everyone, I know I've had Parkinson's about 10 yrs. earlier due to falls, balance. I was out in the yard pulling weeds. I had put my cane by the fence and phone on the ladder. BAD move. I fell into a large planter with a bush planted in it. My bottom went in, legs went up, cane and phone out of reach. Being who I am, I laid in the planter looking at the cane by the fence and phone on ladder, and just laughed! I tried to roll the planter over; didn't work. Not good upper strength, so I just laid there, legs and feet in the air. About 20 mins. later the neighbor came out. I yelled to him, "Can you help me? I fell and I can't get up!" Immediately I thought of that commercial, again laughing. He helped me out!😂😂😂😂😂 My thoughts, YOU should ALWAYS carry your phone .Make sure you have a cane or something close by in case you need it! I LOVE ALL OF YOU❣ I have learned SO MUCH! THANK YOU, I AM ONE 66 Y/O BLESSED LADY❣

      Fantastic attitude Kay, we sure could use more of that humor even when we look ridiculous, my Mom just was diagnosed with PD, she is 82, I’m going to be 58 in June, not many shopping days left, Lol anyway I just appreciate your outlook, I’ve been freaking out. My mom is the last remaining member of the family I was born into, lost my Dad and little brother 20 years ago. They died so young, anyway my mother noticed her balance was off so this was caught at the beginning stage. I would really appreciate it if you will take the time to discuss the stages, time before certain issues become worsen. If you can spare some time to help me with information, I’ve been on so many sites this one did help especially with the group discussion, but any help would be appreciated thank you 🙏

      My neurologist told me that most of the falls she hears about are when the person is holding something in both hands. This is a bad habit I have because my energy is so limited that when I am on I want to accomplish as much as I can. But when it causes falls my productivity definitely falls too!

      To Judy, Hello Judy you don’t know me, my name is Del and my mother who is 82 was just diagnosed with PD in the early stages she just started having balance issues that she never had. Now at 82, oh I’m sorry I lost my father and younger brother back in 03 and 04 about 7 months apart my mother and I are the only remaining members of the family I was raised in, and I’ve been looking through many different sites and this one has been helpful, the others made me feel I wasn’t finding answers. How long does the progression take, I know it differs with each person but I really need to know when she needs me because she has been so strong she won’t burden me with it. I would take great care of her even though I’ve been disabled for 32 years. I’m sorry this has hit me hard. If you would be kind enough to send back a message and lend your two cents I would really appreciate that. Sorry for your loss, bless you, if you feel like helping me out that would be very helpful, either way thank you.

    Just visited my mom and was disheartened to see her in bad way because of parkinsonism (and other issues ). Started looking into things that might help her and came across Vitamin B1 therapy for Parkinson's by Daphne Bryan and Elliot Everton ( Original research by Costantini on Vitamin B1) . I have bern hugely encouraged by reading the book and have asked for my mom to be put on Vitamin B1 HCL tablets as she is in hospital. Finding the correct dose for each person is the main challenge as u will see if u look into it but many seemed to have had positive results. I seemed to have gound some hope again . Wish to pass on the same hope to people who are fighting this disease. Good luck to all . Please do try a ray of hope for all 🙏🙏🙏

    Thank you so much! Very informative. I also have to stop walking to get balance back. I appreciate the guy bringing up about problem when in class he was corrected about keeping his head down. While I walk sometimes I have to watch myself. I start shuffling my feet and lean my body over. Also when I walk in to get prescription for my husband from the pharmacy, I notice my elbows are fixed at the same time and I am carrying it like I would carry a bowl. I am 67 years old. MRI showed I have moderate Alzheimer’s. I now am having symptoms of Parkinson’s. I felt overwhelmed and had the feelings of being in a deep hole and there is no way out. The depression and anxiety was so bad. I decided no more of this.
    I read what to do about what to do about getting dopamine working for me. A lot of different teas I read about. Exercises and walking helped too. Listening to you and physical therapist encouraged me so much as well as each one that showed up. Thank you so much!!!

    Does anyone know if those balance boards with a ball in the middle that makes minor tilts in every direction, it’s supposed to help with balance. When I first saw it they had people who had balance problems and this is supposed to help you regain balance. How long till balance becomes an issue, how long with PD. My mother who’s 82 was diagnosed when she noticed her balance was off, she was always a busy woman who when the last time I visited I told her to slow her roll because I couldn’t keep up with her, she was almost 80! My mother is the last remaking member of the family I was born into. This is freaking me out, I’ve been to many sites that didn’t teach me anything till I came here. If anyone has it in them to help I sure could use it now please 🙏

    • @davisphinneyfdn
      @davisphinneyfdn  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Delevan. In general, those devices are good for balance; however, there are a lot of ifs with that. Do you have a Parkinson's physical therapist or any physical therapist? If not, I would suggest you seek one out as they will be able to do a proper assessment of your situation and offer interventions and exercises that are good and safe for you. That's the ideal place to start.

    I have a question someone may know the answer. My mother who’s 82 was just diagnosed with early stage PD. Has anyone tried psilocybin in Micro doses? I have nerve damage from an accident, that I was put on Permanent/ Total Disability, at least I was hurt at work and was making a good living. I tried it for pain, depression and electrical shock pains that would shoot down my leg and go into the other leg, extremely painful. Point is it worked and helped a lot with depression, pain and sleep to be honest. Please I’m trying to learn as much as I can she is my only living family member left, besides my family. I’ve lost way to much already. Your advice would be appreciated…

    • @davisphinneyfdn
      @davisphinneyfdn  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Delevan - Before you try any therapy, including complementary therapies such as psilocybin, it is critical that you speak with your medical care team. Because Parkinson's often has impacts on cognition, thinking, processing, anything that messes with that can be very problematic.

    I have a problem with one of my legs is shorter than the other due to a hip prosthesis I’m always limping which makes my short leg tire quickly. Plus I believe that problem also causes me to lose my balance and it of course affects my gait. I have been wearing heel lifts on my short side and that seems to help a little. Is there anything else I can do to overcome this issue.

    • @davisphinneyfdn
      @davisphinneyfdn  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yoga and tai chi are great ways to improve balance and strengthen your muscles. Hip surgeries can limit some of the motion in these activities, but a good teacher will know how to help you navigate these limitations. If you don't already, you might also consider working with a physical therapist.
      Also, there are walking poles which might help. Check out urban poling: davisphinneyfoundation.org/poles-and-parkinsons-how-pole-walking-can-help-you-live-well-and-stronger-with-parkinsons/

    What is freezing? I have fell 2 times

    • @davisphinneyfdn
      @davisphinneyfdn  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi MaryJo, Freezing usually refers to "freezing of gait" which essentially means that your body gets "stuck" while walking, and even when you're trying to move your legs forward, they just won't go. Often it happens when you're trying to cross a barrier, or turn, or sometimes anxiety provoking situations can cause freezing as well. There are a lot of resources at the following link where you can learn more! davisphinneyfoundation.org/?s=freezing

    What is gait

    • @davisphinneyfdn
      @davisphinneyfdn  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A person's gait is how they walk. Often, people with Parkinson's have abnormal arm swing and may tend to drag a foot and take smaller steps. Other people "festinate", which means that they take smaller steps at a faster pace. There are many other attributes of how one walks that can be influenced by Parkinson's as well.
