Sometimes I forget you guys are Canadian and just have health insurance, as an American I have to say that's one big reason people here get married. I think it's mostly American kids wondering why you aren't married since so many people here are for legal reasons (and love etc.) Props to you for not being pressured into an extravagant wedding (though imagine ben in a holo tux? just saying)
Right? I'm disabled and rely on my husband's job for health insurance because getting disability SSI/SSDI is nearly impossible. There are a lot of legal benefits to be married in the USA.

For some reason, here in the US not really sure about Canada though, every one judges you poorly if you aren’t engaged after dating someone for two flippin years. I got ridiculed by family members, co-workers and random judgy people all the time. I once had a co-worker tell me that my now husband must not really love me or want me since we had been dating for six years and he hadn’t proposed yet.
My brothers told me to leave him because we weren’t engaged after the first year... 🤦🏻♀️ People are stupid, the reasons we got married are; health insurance, tax break for him and his parents said we couldn’t live together if we weren’t at least engaged (we did anyway, but he wasn’t super happy about upsetting them, fair).
Side note: we are high school sweet hearts, who the fuck can afford a wedding at 19? Or even 20? 🤷🏻♀️Started dating in 2008 and got married in 2017, happy we waited. Honestly, I would have spent the money we spent on our wedding on our house hands down. Would have been a much better use of it, but his family is very traditional so fine...
If you guys are happy the way you are that is all that matters, marriage literally does nothing to keep you together.
*Ahem* I realized that this could come off wrong. I love my husband, I just wish there wasn’t social pressure telling us what we HAD to marry and more of just letting us be together in our own way. I don’t view marriage as adding anything to our actual relationship, it just makes it easier for us in some aspects if we are. Those ways should already be available to us, but aren’t for some reason.
